This book by F. WIlliam Engdahl details the politics behind genetically modified organisms (GMOs). If people read this book, there would be a demand for labeling. Sadly, most corn and soy is now genetically modified. Canola oil is also always genetically modified.

The book lists the dangers of eating GMOs:

1) NEW TOXINS CREATED: Toxins are unintentionally created when new genes are introduced into a plant's cells. (page 6)

2) SMALLER SIZE IF THOSE WHO EAT GMOs: In a study in which rats were fed GMO potatoes, they were found to have smaller body size, smaller liver and heart sizes, and smaller brain sizes! (p. 23)

3) UNPREDICTABILITY: A given DNA molecule may be stable in a test tube, but can become unstable in living organisms, interacting in extremely non-linear and complex ways. (p. 156) Biologist Dr. Mae-Wan Ho stressed, "Entirely new genes and combinations of genes are made in the laboratory and inserted into the genomes of organisms to make GMOs. Contrary to what you are told by pro-GMO scientists, the process is not at all precise. It is uncontrollable and unreliable, and typically ends up damaging and scrambing the host genome, with entirely unpredictable consequences." (p. 159)

4) BAD HEALTH OR DEATH WHEN EATING A LOT OF GMOs: Glockner, a university trained farmer, was shocked to find his cattle having gluey-white feces and violent diarrhea after he increased the dosage to a diet of pure GMO corn! Their milk contained blood, and some cows stopped producing milk. Five calves died! Glockner ultimately lost almost his entire herd of 70 cows! (p. 231)

5) INFANT DEATH: In 2006, a story in a respected London newspaper, The Independent, carried a story called, "Unborn Babies Could be Harmed by GMOs.

This was a required book for my micro class. It's not an easy book to read, I had to re read a lot of it in order to retain the info :P also it should be hard cover due to the width of the book, it's very floppy.

The cover of the book came destroyed and I decided to rent the book since it's cheaper. I just feel that they should have sent a book in better condition especially since the info on the book said it was in good condition

Review

"Richard Krueger and Mary Anne Casey have prepared a detailed, step-by-step roadmap of how to design, prepare for, implement, analyze, and report on focus groups. They give detailed discussions of issues to consider, tips, and warnings to help prepare for the expected and unexpected. The book informs the novice focus group user and provides insight for the seasoned focus group practitioner."

(Judith Berkowitz)

"This book is packed with sound advice and detailed approaches, making this method a success. . . If you are even thinking about doing any kind of group interview, this is the place to start."

(Nursing Times)

"We want people to listen to us. . . . Focus group interviewing is about listening. It is about paying attention. . . . being nonjudgmental. . . . When used appropriately, the process improves listening and the results can be used to benefit people who shared the information. And people go away feeling good about having been heard."

(Richard A. Krueger & Mary Anne Casey From Preface)

There are so many glaring errors and misinformation in this book that I will no longer use it to prepare for my exam. I have no confidence that the information is correct. I downloaded an E-book from AHIMA and will use that to study ICD-10 CM/PCS. Sorry, but I will be returning this.

This book is created to prepare Medical Coders for their exam. It contains so many mistakes in the answers even the unprepared one could catch them. The book was "brand new" with patches on 2 pages and made me feel the authors were rushing to publish before double check for accuracy.

Herophilus, a contemporary of Euclid, practiced medicine in Alexandria in the third century B.C., and seems to have been the first Western scientist to dissect the human body. He made especially impressive contributions to many branches of anatomy and also developed influential views on many other aspects of medicine. Von Staden assembles the fragmentary evidence concerning one of the more important scientists of ancient Greece. Part 1 of the book presents the Greek and Latin texts accompanied by English translation and interpretative commentary. Significant background information is given in the introductory essay preceding each chapter. Part 2 briefly sketches the major developments within the Herophilean school after Herophilus, and discusses the individual members within it. Anyone interested in the history of science, the history of medicine, or intellectual history will find this book a rich source of information about an unusual and important aspect of Greek culture.

In the history of medicine, popularity is mainly focused on the famous scientists such as Hipoccrates and Galen. However on the basis of positive science, maybe the most important scientist is Herophilus. The knowledge on Herophilus is rare and scattered in different testimonies and writings of authors such as Galen and Celsus. This valuable work of von Staden collects all these scattered information in one book. I think this book should be the main starting point to study ancient Alexandrian medicine, Herophilus and Herophilians. This book will not only illuminate today's knowledge but will also guide the future knowledge

A PUBLISHERS WEEKLY BEST OF 2013 STAFF PICK

As M.E. Thomas says of her fellow sociopaths, “We are your neighbors, your coworkers, and quite possibly the people closest to you: lovers, family, friends. Our risk-seeking behavior and general fearlessness are thrilling, our glibness and charm alluring. Our often quick wit and outside-the-box thinking make us appear intelligent—even brilliant. We climb the corporate ladder faster than the rest, and appear to have limitless self-confidence.  Who are we? We are highly successful, noncriminal sociopaths and we comprise 4 percent of the American population.”

Confessions of a Sociopath—part confessional memoir, part primer for the curious—takes readers on a journey into the mind of a sociopath, revealing what makes them tick while debunking myths about sociopathy and offering a road map for dealing with the sociopaths in your life. M. E. Thomas draws from her own experiences as a diagnosed sociopath; her popular blog, Sociopathworld.com; and scientific literature to unveil for the very first time these men and women who are “hiding in plain sight.”

At least she is coming out to all but her family. This is written as a confessional/memoir of its author Monica E. Thomas,a pseudonym, necessitated by the subject matter and to protect her present socioeconomic life.

Having just read the reviews written before mine, it would seem I am the first to have actually read the entire book, well, at least, so far.

I would agree with the other reviewers that the book is technically well written, but does get long in the tooth by the half way mark, with many points being repeated several times which lengthened the book with no apparent advantage that I could ascertain; otherwise I would have given 4 stars.

I would agree that the author as self described is unlikeable, but whom I found very interesting simply because I am a retired psychologist and spent the last ten years working with female murderers. The author goes into some detail in trying to distinguish psychopaths, sociopaths, and person with anti-social personality disorder; but for the majority of the world these distinctions are exercises in semantics only. To help clarify this point, as the author takes some time discussing her rational for the distinction. A psychiatrist, Hervey Clecky wrote the magnum opus on psychopathology in 1941 in a book called MASK OF SANITY; he might be better known to you for his book on multiple personality disorder which was turned into a movie in 1957 called THE THREE FACES OF EVE. A Dr. Robert Hare building upon Clecky's work devised a 20 question scale to judge antisocial personality disorder. He only used convicts to base his results on, so it is not representative of the general population and certainly doesn't have the background of the MMPI.
ME Thomas claims to be a Dexter but she really is a Saddam Hussein. I come from a malignant narcissist home and Thomas speaks and rationalizes just like the narcissists I know. Search for the fairy tales of the malignant narcissist and you will see. Here is a description of Malignant Narcissism from Goldner-Vukov and Moore (Psychiatria Danubina, 2010; Vol. 22, No. 3, pp 392-405); in parentheses are my examples of how her confessions match up to this disorder:

1. They are contemptuous of social conventions and show a passive tendency to lie, steal, and mismanage money. (in other words her disdain for risks keeps her undetected)

2.They are adaptive, capable of consistent hard work and of achieving success (she's a lawyer). However, their work is done primarily to gain admiration (writing this book) and their intellect is strikingly shallow. They are often materialistic (she tells us of driving off in a muscle car and wearing nice clothes in her opossum drowning story) and ready to shift their values to gain favour (her claim to be a chameleon). They are prone to pathological lying (details are contradictory, her father was a hateful petty guy on one page but did his best on another page). In the realm of love and sexuality they are charming (what she calls her sociopath charm), seductive and promiscuous (she tells of her promiscuity), but unable to develop deep relationships.

3. The ego-syntonic sadism of MN is displayed by a characterologically-anchored aggression. It is expressed in a conscious `ideology' of aggressive self-affirmation (she knowingly wants to make others feel bad about themselves and mess up their plans).

Curriculum Development and Evaluation in Nursing by Sarah B. Keating (ed.) (2006) has seven sections and 15 chapters as a practical guide for developing curricula at the ADN, BSN, entry level masters, specialty and advanced practice masters, and doctoral programs. Section one is introduction to the history of curriculum development and faculty role. Section two is about learning theories, education taxonomies, and critical thinking. Section three presents the external and internal frame factors for conducting a needs assessment for reviewing and developing curricula. Section four, curriculum development, addresses undergraduate and graduate components of the curriculum. Section five, curriculum and program evaluation, covers master planning for program and curriculum evaluation, application of educational evaluation models, and planning for accreditation. Section six adapts curriculum development and evaluation to staff development and client-centered health education. Section seven reveals issues and trends in curriculum development and evaluation. The chapters are written by 12 contributing authors. Keating writes "A curriculum is the formal plan of study that provides the philosophical underpinning, goals, and guidelines for the delivery of a specific educational program." Faculty is responsible and need a view of the curriculum as a whole. History is a strength of the book. Authors address the transformative and constructivist learning theories, the use of technology to deliver the curriculum, distance education and the measurement of program outcomes as part of total quality management. Both formal and informal curricula are diagramed. Chapters have a summary, discussion questions, learning activities, faculty learning activities and references.

This was a required book for my micro class. It's not an easy book to read, I had to re read a lot of it in order to retain the info :P also it should be hard cover due to the width of the book, it's very floppy.
By Kendra Barr
The cover of the book came destroyed and I decided to rent the book since it's cheaper. I just feel that they should have sent a book in better condition especially since the info on the book said it was in good condition

Review

"David Schuster's Neurasthenic Nation provides a vivid and compelling account of neurasthenia and its place in American medicine and culture."
(Laura Hirshbein author of American Melancholy 2099-01-01)

"[An] excellent study. The book is a worthy addition to the voluminous literature on neurasthenia."
(Journal of American History 2012-09-01)

"David G. Schuster provides a comprehensive examination of the origins and nature of [neurasthenia], but more importantly he captures why it became such an important social, economic, and cultural phenomenon, as well as why, after 1920, it declined so precipitously."
(Historian 2012-12-01)

Amazon.com Review

Q&A with M. E. Thomas

Q. Were you always aware that you were different?

A. Yes, though when I was young, I thought maybe it was just because I was smarter than everyone else. I saw things that other children did not see, was aware of the adult world in a way that even my smart siblings were not—awkward interactions from the end of an affair, why my grandpa treated my dad differently from his other children (he was adopted), and so on. I knew other people did not see these things because I would reference them and get blank stares in return. I learned to keep things to myself, even to pretend I didn’t see them. Those were probably some of my first attempts to wear a mask of normalcy.

Q. What are the common characteristics/behaviors shared by most sociopaths? Do they describe you, too?

A. Lack of remorse or concern for hurting or stealing; being deceitful, manipulative, impulsive, irritable, aggressive, and consistently irresponsible; failure to conform to social norms; and being unconcerned about people’s safety, including their own. You need to have at least three of these to be a sociopath. I have them all, to varying degrees.

Q. You believe that sociopaths have a natural competitive advantage. Why?

A. Sociopaths have several skills that lend themselves to success in areas such as politics and business: charm, an ability to see and exploit weaknesses/flaws (which in politics is called “power-broking” and in business, “arbitrage”), confidence, unflagging optimism, an ability to think outside the box and come up with original ideas, and a lack of squeamishness about doing what it takes to get ahead.

Q. If you don’t have a sense of morality, or feel the emotions that most people do, how are you able to operate in the world without being detected?

A. I think everyone learns to lie about his or her emotions to a certain extent; I just take it a step farther. People ask, “How are you?” and you respond, “fine,” even though you had a fight with your spouse that morning, have a sick child, or any multitude of things that make it hard for you to feel fine about almost anything in your life. You could honestly answer the question, but you don’t because overt displays of strong emotion in ordinary social interactions are not accepted. Most of the time I don’t need to show any emotion at all, and I try to limit the times that I do by begging off attending funerals, weddings, etc. When I do show up to these functions, I try to mimic the other attendees. If I’m dealing with a person one-on-one, I just try to reflect their emotions; usually they’re distracted enough by their own overflowing emotions not to notice my lack of them.

Q. Research shows that one in twenty-five people is a sociopath, yet most of us believe we’ve never met one. Are we just kidding ourselves? Are you able to spot them?

A. Statistically, everyone has met at least one sociopath; in fact, most people will have a close encounter with a sociopath at some point in their lives, either as a friend, family member, or lover. Sometimes I can tell who they are. I find that many successful sociopaths will leave deliberate clues as to what they are, the thought being that only other sociopaths would recognize them. I think sociopaths, like serial killers, often have a yearning to be acknowledged for who they are. They want people to admire their exploits, and that is hard to get when they are completely hidden, so they make small compromises.

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Thomas (a pseudonym) is a young white female who has all the classic character traits of a sociopath. She is a thrill seeker with excessive self-esteem and a pronounced lack of empathy. She does not conform to social norms and has a penchant for deceit. “I may have a disorder,” she writes, “but I am not crazy.” In fact, she has excelled as an attorney and law professor who regularly writes for law journals and teaches Sunday school every week as a practicing Mormon. She is, she says, intelligent and charming. “You would like me if you met me,” she insists. She also describes what she is not. She is not a murderer nor was she ever a victim of child abuse. Recent studies, she maintains, report that 1-to-4-percent, or one in every 25 people, is a sociopath. Like her, most live normal lives. She describes her upbringing as the daughter of a violent father and an indifferent and at times hysterical mother and her genetic propensity toward her condition. Fascinating and compelling as well as chilling, Thomas’ memoir offers a window into the mind of a portion of the population that usually remains shrouded in mystery and fear. --June Sawyers

About the Author

Women’s health advocate and science journalist BARBARA SEAMAN (1935-2008) is best known for her tireless patient advocacy work, which brought about the first warning label on a prescription drug (the birth control pill), and eventually  lead her to co-found the National Woman’s Health Network, which continues to protect women’s rights today. Her first book, The Doctors’ Case Against the Pill (1969), prompted senate hearings, exposed the biases of the medical establishment regarding women’s health issues, and inspired women around the world to take control of their health. Through her many books, countless articles, and how she personally encouraged so many writers, publishers, and activists of all ages, Seaman devoted her life to advocating for women’s rights regarding their health.

Co-editor LAURA ELDRIDGE is a women’s health writer and activist. She is the author of In Our Control: The Complete Guide to Contraceptive Choices for Women and the co-author of The No-Nonsense Guide to Menopause.

If you are looking for something to show you flashy posters, do a Google imgage search on scientific posters. This is a very helpful book. I learned a lot about how to prepare figures and I use it as a reference almost all the time. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because it is a little bit dated (written in the 1990's), and I think installations have evolved a bit.

This workbook does help learn the material. The answers are in the back for guidance. The only problem with that is some of the answers referred to a textbook page in lieu of actually giving the answer and those page numbers weren't always accurate.

Book was as described and so much cheaper than the school bookstore. Shipping was pretty fast as well, the only drawback is I have to do the work(lol).

Hailed by advance reviewers as a kinder, gentler P. Chem. text, this book meets the needs of a one-semester course or a full-year course in physical chemistry. It is an ideal choice for classes geared toward pre-medical and life sciences students. Or, as stated in a May 2001 review in Journal of Chemical Education, this text meets these students where they are and opens the door to physical chemistry from a perspective they can appreciate. Physical Chemistry for the Chemical and Biological Sciences offers a wealth of applications to chemical and biological problems, numerous chapter-ending exercises, and an accompanying solutions manual. Well known for his clear writing and careful pedagogical approach, Raymond Chang has developed yet another masterpiece in chemical education.

I am field-testing this text for a two-semester Physical Chemistry sequence. Initial impressions of the book are very favorable. In particular, I like Prof. Chang's use of several "real world" examples to illustrate important principles. My students find the math substantial but not very intimidating.

Some colleagues of mine miss the mathematical rigor found in other Phy Chem texts like McQuarrie and Levine however.

On a lighter note, the color scheme used for this text is excellent. It is just right, neither too drab nor too glaring.
By Nestor
This is a good text. It is not at as high level as most other popular p-chem textbooks. If you think this text is too hard, then forget about the p-chem texts by Atkins or McQuarrie. You might want to get a copy of Physical chemistry by Ball or the one by Engel and Reid to clarify some materials. I don't think any p-chem text is necessary better than others. Each has its own strenghs and weaknesses. How well you do in this course will also depend on your preparedness to take it. Many students are not well prepared to take p-chem. Therefore they blame the textbook, their teacher, and everything they can think of in the universe and beyond for not doing well in this course.
