Ethics of Animal Use
Download Ethics of Animal Use for everyone book with Mediafire Link Download Link An interesting and accessible introduction to ethical issues raised by various forms of human use of animals. This textbook avoids moral lecturing and presents a range of ethical viewpoints without defending or applying any specific stance. Readers are encouraged and provoked to reflect for themselves, and to sharpen their own points of view regarding the ethical limits on our use of animals. They will also gain further understanding of the views held by other people.

Early chapters of this interdisciplinary book cover changes over time in our view of animals, the principles of animal ethics, and different views of what counts as a good animal life. Later chapters apply the conceptual tools to specific issues including: food animal production, advanced veterinary treatment of pets, control of infectious diseases, wildlife management, as well as the use of animals in research.

Specifically designed for students of veterinary medicine, animal science, welfare and behaviour, and veterinary nursing. Also of interest to those wanting to combine an up-to-date, science-based account of animal issues with clear-headed moral reflection.

"The book covers an impressive range of topics with accuracy and fairness. Despite its ambitious scope, the authors have achieved remarkable unity in the book, and have produced a book that is easy and pleasant to read. Their work will surely provide a major tool for rationalizing the debate about the ethics of animal use, and I commend them for their invaluable contribution." This was required at school. I found it interesting, but it wasn't all that thought-provoking. Good for those interested in rights vs. welfare.

Needed this for course addressing - you guessed it - animal ethics. Focuses a lot on veterinary profession & farm production, but little so far on aspects of other people in the field...

Mayo Clinic Electrophysiology Manual is the first comprehensive guide to the electrical activity of biological cells and tissues and the techniques of electrophysiology. Through a case-based discussion of patients with arrhythmias, the book illustrates the various contemporary techniques for diagnosis, imaging, and physiology-based therapeutic ablation.

Section One addresses the basics of electrophysiology, including device placement, recording, measurement, diagnosis, imaging, amperometry, and physiology-based therapeutic ablation, helping the reader appreciate and more fully understand the complexity and lessons of the emergent specialty. The second section is a case-based discussion of adult and pediatric arrhythmias broken down into twenty patient case studies intended to help the student and clinician apply their understanding of electrophysiology to real presentations, and think about how to plan and execute invasive study and ablation. Each of the twenty case chapters features a question and answer section in order to aid study and retention of material.

Replete with full-page color images of intracardiac electrograms, fluoroscopic images, ultrasound images, advanced mapping, and correlated anatomic dissection, Mayo Clinic Electrophysiology Manual is the first focused exploration of the topic and is specifically designed to help both students and practitioners understand and integrate techniques into their daily practice. At present, clinicians have to piece together information on electrophysiology from a variety of sources, often leaving gaps in knowledge. Mayo Clinic Electrophysiology Manual provides the clinician with a single authoritative guide and quick reference. Through in-depth analysis of electrophysiological techniques and an understanding of the anatomic and physiological basis for present day mapping, image integration, and ablation, this volume is an indispensable resource for students, practicing physicians, researchers, and experts in electrophysiology.

Review

"This is a rich and practical resource for all those working with children, including educators, therapists, and psychologists. Dawson and Guare demystify the complex and often confusing construct of executive function, citing its neurological basis, but also providing practical insights about how executive dysfunction affects the lives of students of all ages and ability levels. Notably, Dawson and Guare address executive functions from a developmental perspective, acknowledging the dynamic interaction between brain development and the ever-changing societal demands placed on children. The second edition also addresses the issue of primary prevention of executive function problems. Readers will especially appreciate the case examples and recommendations for intervention in the classroom, home, and in therapeutic and coaching settings, as well as the many intervention guides provided in the appendices."--E. Mark Mahone, PhD, ABPP, Director, Neuropsychology, Kennedy Krieger Institute; Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine

"Executive Skills in Children and Adolescents, Second Edition, is a thoughtful, thorough, and timely resource for education students, practitioners, and school psychologists. This book is the definitive examination of executive functioning in children and adolescents. It is comprehensive in its coverage and highlights the need for assessment of executive skills in the classroom. This is an excellent reference for practitioners designing instructional programs for students who need additional training in executive skills."--Tina Stanton-Chapman, PhD, Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Education, University of Virginia

"The book represents a welcome step forward in designing and implementing interventions and supports to promote executive function at home and in the classroom. Dawson and Guare integrate up-to-date theory with interventions that take a real-world, problem-solving approach to the full spectrum of executive difficulties, from inhibitory control and emotional regulation to initiation, working memory, planning, and organization. An essential 'how-to' manual."--Peter K. Isquith, PhD, Departments of Psychiatry and Pediatrics, Dartmouth Medical School

"This invaluable resource has been updated, reorganized, and expanded. The authors blend theory and practice to provide a thorough understanding of why and how to implement interventions for executive skills deficits. The book is formatted for quick, easy reference with concise tables, figures, and forms; the language and content are professional yet very user friendly. Presented are widely applicable intervention strategies that will help facilitate immediate results for school practitioners and teachers."--Stephen G. Hoppin, PsyD, school psychologist, Jefferson County School District, Colorado

"As a school psychologist, I am always looking for resources that take the latest research and translate it into everyday practice. Dawson and Guare provide practical, specific, and easy-to-use guidelines for intervening with students at every tier of the RTI process. From assessment to intervention to progress monitoring, the book is packed with clear routines and tools to use in consulting with teachers, parents, and administrators. It also has a wealth of information about how to intervene with whole classes, small groups, and individual students. My copy of the first edition is well worn, and I can already tell the second edition will be as well, because of its practical and easily reproducible materials."--Rebecca Branstetter, PhD, school psychologist, Oakland Unified School District, California

"This is a comprehensive resource for professionals who work with children of all ages. The authors include helpful and practical tables, checklists, and steps for many general classroom routines, as well as assessments and interventions for specific executive skills. The second edition provides an expanded response-to-intervention framework for applying the instructional techniques with whole classes and individual students."--Patti L. Harrison, PhD, Department of Educational Studies in Psychology, Research Methodology, and Counseling, University of Alabama

"This is an exceptionally useful book which I highly recommend."--Schooldays Magazine

Is the prospective reader interested in a quick survey of the American health care system? Then this book would probably be of value to you. Does one want a detailed exposition of that system? This would not work so well for that purpose.

This volume covers the waterfront.

The first set of chapters provides a good background: characteristics of the healthcare system, general perspectives on health care delivery (including cultural vales and what we mean by health), a history of the system, and so on.

Other central issues are covered chapter by chapter. Examples of the coverage: the role of technology, healthcare finance, managed care, long-term care, cost-access-quality (all three covered in one chapter leaves actual details thinly covered, but it does provide an entree to these linked concerns), health policy, and the future of the healthcare system. Other issues are covered as well.

All in all, a helpful volume if you want a quick overview of the complexity of the healthcare system.

"Goodman & Gilman's The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics" is one dynamic text, which has made indelible contributions to the study of pharmacology. Its choice of using simple everyday language in explaining complex pharmacological processes is most welcomed. The same could be said concerning the sheer depth of its contents. And, this eleventh edition has succeeded in raising the standard higher. It provides comprehensive, up-to-date coverage on all aspects of clinical pharmacology. Detailed analyses of both drugs and nutritional suppliments were made. The most outstanding being: the fundamental concepts surrounding their pharmacokinetics, mechanisms of action, and clinical applications.
Again, the pages of this excellent book has increased by some one hundred pages over the tenth edition. A significant number of these new pages were dedicated to easy-to-understand Pharmacological charts, chemical structures of drugs, their metabolic pathways, and other related physiological illustrations. Also, various chapters (partcularly those dealing with antibiotics, prophylaxis, critical care, and pediatric prescriptions) have been updated.
I very much appreciate the improvements made on this eleventh edition, yet, my advice to anybody who has already acquired the tenth edition is to stick with it. I frankly see no point in buying this one if you already own the tenth edition.
By VAL ODUENYI
I am a physician, and recently used the previous (10th) edition as an overview for a presentation I was preparing on opioid analgesics. We just got our new, 11th edition, and I embarked on a comparison of the chapters. To my astonishment, despite the considerable ongoing research in opioid pharmacology, the chapters were practically identical, with the new edition providing NO substantive new information. I cannot speak to the rest of this venerable reference, but this chapter was just a rehash (and a big disappointment).

When the woman he loved was diagnosed with a metastatic cancer, science writer George Johnson embarked on a journey to learn everything he could about the disease and the people who dedicate their lives to understanding and combating it. What he discovered is a revolution under way - an explosion of new ideas about what cancer really is and where it comes from. In a provocative and intellectually vibrant exploration, he takes us on an adventure through the history and recent advances of cancer research that will challenge everything you thought you knew about the disease.

Deftly excavating and illuminating decades of investigation and analysis, he reveals what we know and don't know about cancer, showing why a cure remains such a slippery concept. We follow him as he combs through the realms of epidemiology, clinical trials, laboratory experiments, and scientific hypotheses - rooted in every discipline from evolutionary biology to game theory and physics. Cogently extracting fact from a towering canon of myth and hype, he describes tumors that evolve like alien creatures inside the body, paleo-oncologists who uncover petrified tumors clinging to the skeletons of dinosaurs and ancient human ancestors, and the surprising reversals in science's comprehension of the causes of cancer, with the foods we eat and environmental toxins playing a lesser role. Perhaps most fascinating of all is how cancer borrows natural processes involved in the healing of a wound or the unfolding of a human embryo and turns them, jujitsu-like, against the body.

Throughout his pursuit, Johnson clarifies the human experience of cancer with elegiac grace, bearing witness to the punishing gauntlet of consultations, surgeries, targeted therapies, and other treatments. He finds compassion, solace, and community among a vast network of patients and professionals committed to the fight and wrestles to comprehend the cruel randomness cancer metes out in his own family. Science-writer George Johnson and his wife heard three words that changed their lives - "you've got cancer" - when she was diagnosed with a metastatic uterine form of the disease. As a result, Johnson embarked on a quest to learn everything he could about cancer and has written an interesting overview of what is known, which turns out to be less than you might hope. Cancer is not one disease but many and has been around a long time, and evidence of different cancers have even been found in dinosaur fossils. In fact, it has been with mankind as long as we've been around, but if it seems to be increasing it's only because we're living longer. With some cruel exceptions, cancer is mostly a disease of older people but, beyond age, the only other reliable factors that can be said to cause cancer are smoking and obesity.

If you're looking for a positive, upbeat, "let's beat Cancer!" kind of book, this probably isn't it. Johnson says that while we've made significant strides, our understanding of why it happens and how to treat it still has a long way to go. He points out that studies are frequently flawed and inconclusive, and recommendations that eating fruits and vegetables or any particular food will help prevent cancer do not hold up under more rigorous testing. There is some correlation that exercise and maintaining a healthy body and diet helps, but the benefits are often small and disputed. And as he discusses the effects of drinking water tainted with chemical pollutants he illustrates very well why it is so difficult to *prove* causation. Even if a specific chemical or activity can be linked to a 30% increase in cancer (which sounds very dramatic), if your odds were only 1.2% in the beginning it only translates to new odds of 1.
I was eager to read this book because, as a surgeon, I am always searching for new information, fresh ideas and innovative techniques in the management of cancer.

I read the 280+ pages of The Cancer Chronicles hoping maybe to discover a new treatment, or a novel approach or cutting edge therapy to combat this vicious disease that has plagued all living creatures since life began on earth. Tumors have been found in fossils of dinosaurs.
Sadly I found nothing new; the promised "explosive new ideas" touted by the publicity hype were neither new nor explosive, but just fizzled. Most of it was common routine knowledge in the medical field. On page 17, I learned that "mammals appear to get more cancer than reptiles or fish. Domesticated animals seem to get more cancer than their cousins in the wild. And people get the most cancer of all." It is a great piece of information with which to stomp your friends at trivia.
Even some information was inaccurate; the author confuses the function of free radicals with antioxidants.

The book touches on the genesis of cancer, mostly unknown except for a few causative relationships such as smoking and environmental hazards (Eg. asbestos) associated with mainly with lung cancers. It correctly challenges the myths of unproven causal links between cancer, the environment or diet. Many studies are inconclusive, flawed or biased.
Screening tests like mammograms, PSA and CA 125 are not specific or sensitive enough for an absolute diagnosis and often result in a false positive, leading to unnecessary, often radical, treatment. Ideally, early diagnosis and treatment lead to cure; best examples of screening are Pap smears and colonoscopy that can detect pre-cancerous lesions and allow early therapy.

Review

"This book is succinct and an easy read, providing clear discussions of ethical philosophy without moralizing and emphasizing any particular viewpoint. ... The book is highly recommended." (Journal of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, September 2009)

"This short book is a useful introduction to the issues regarding animal use and to the concepts and theories used in informed discussions about ethically appropriate uses. The authors adopt a 'pluralist approach,' to present 'the arguments dispassionately, and in a fair and balanced way' ... .Well researched and presents a wealth of Information." (Agriculture and Human Values, January 2009)

From the Back Cover

An interesting and accessible introduction to ethical issues raised by various forms of human use of animals.

"The book covers an impressive range of topics with accuracy and fairness. Despite its ambitious scope, the authors have achieved remarkable unity in the book, and have produced a book that is easy and pleasant to read. Their work will surely provide a major tool for rationalizing the debate about the ethics of animal use, and I commend them for their invaluable contribution." From the Foreword by Professor Bernard Rollin, Colorado State University.

Quick reminders of what to keep tabs on during your work with couples. Nothing too profound here but great to check back on the various topics that will always be touched up in couples therapy. Great idea to use when creating treatment plans as the wording is accurate and well thought out. Also great suggestions on books to have your clients read (although I hardly do this since I have my own recommendations).

Review

A New York Times Bestseller

"A startling revelation of the dysfunction deeply embedded in the very culture of American medical practice, problems that health care reform scarcely begins to address."—Peter Boyer, senior correspondent for Newsweek

"A searing indictment from the inside, arguing that the modern health-care industry, unlike almost every other, doesn't disclose its performance or pricing practices to the public and keeps under wraps information about mistakes and substandard quality.”--Laura Landro, The Wall Street Journal

“Makary’s diagnosis is dangerous, damaging secrecy; his therapy is radical transparency…. [Makary’s] argument is powerful…. [he] makes a strong case that the system we have is a disaster for patients.”--Trine Tsouderos, Chicago Tribune Printers Row

"A very readable, thought-provoking book that will be of interest to health-care consumers, providers, and legislators. The problems pointed out and the solutions suggested deserve to be part of a national discussion."— Richard Maxwell, Porter Adventist Hospital Library, Denver, Library Journal

"Makary’s book makes it perfectly clear that data transparency not only allows people to make informed decisions about their health but also nudges hospitals and physicians to be more vigilant and efficient."—Tony Miksanek, Booklist

"You will be a wiser health consumer for reading this book."Michael E Johns, M.D., Chancellor, Emory University

"This thought-provoking guide from a leader in the field is a must-read for M.D.s, and an eye-opener for the rest of us."—Publishers Weekly

"Unaccountable is a gripping story about what’s wrong with the American healthcare system and what we might do to make it better."—Peter Pronovost MD, PhD, Executive Vice-President, Johns Hopkins Hospital

"Every once in a while a book comes along that rocks the foundations of an established order that's seriously in need of being shaken. The modern American hospital is that establishment and Unaccountable is that book."—Shannon Brownlee, author of Overtreated

"A galvanizing book full of shocking truths about the current state of health care."—Kirkus Reviews

Dr. Marty Makary, a cancer surgeon at the renowned John's Hopkins School of Medicine, has written a provocative, well-researched, and quite scary book that should be read by physicians, nurses, patients, and hospital administrators. Here are some shocking statistics he gives: One in four hospital patients is hurt by a medical mistake. Thirty to forty percent of our health care dollars pays for fraudulent or unnecessary care. Ten to fifteen percent of patients are not given all their options regarding their care. Possibly the most shocking statistic of all: surgeons operate on the wrong body part 40 times per week!

To a physician like myself, these statistics are unfortunately not all that surprising. Medicine is administered by humans, and thus subject to human error. Makary writes that the key to improving health care outcomes (and excess cost) is greater transparency. Basically, doctors and hospitals need to be more open with their complication rates, alternative treatments, and be more willing to prevent bad doctors from practicing medicine. Because doctors and hospitals won't make these changes, the key is patient empowerment.

In that way Makary's book pushes patients to act in their best interests and not accept the status quo. It hearkens back to his contributions with author and medical essayist Atul Gawande in The Checklist Manifesto: How to Get Things Right. In my hospital, as many others around the country, many of his recommendations are, in fact, being instituted such as with the Keystone initiative.

This is really a pretty good book. It seems to be helping overall with my comprehension of the subject, but the material is very dense. I don't think anyone should really expect to retain too much on the first go around, but using the review questions near at the end of each chapter really helped with the pathology class, and the testing for that class.
By satire28
Behind Rapid Review Pathology (Goljan) this was my favorite book during my second year of medical school. I used to read Robbins basic pathology religiously, but realistically that book is not well suited for medical school. The Robbins series has way too much detail about the pathogenesis and histo-path and not enough detail about the clinical presentation. I like this book because it is a brief read and by the end of each chapter you will really be able to paint a picture in your head about how a patient with a specific disease will present. The schematics are great! If you are using Rapid Review Pathology, then you should consider this book a must read companion text. Dr. Damjanov has copyrights on many of the gross path images and you will see many of them in Goljan's text (Goljan even thanks him in the preface of Rapid Review Path). After reading this book you can really tell how pathology can be so different if it is taught from a clinical standpoint. I highly recommend this book, especially when used with Rapid Review Pathology.

Review

"There are few technical books that remain in a leadership position for 65 years. The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics is one. Physicians, teachers, and medical students have voted for Goodman & Gilman with their feet and with their pocketbooks for over six decades. The question is not whether this is an important and useful text, but why?...While Goodman & Gilman is no quick-read, it is surprisingly clearly written, logical and interesting. It is also an awesome realization to see how much one never knew, added to what one knew but forgot."--The Permanente Journal (The Permanente Journal 2006-08-01)

This book is not yet with me so I don't know the inside of it though it has been recommended by my professor to be a very excellent book.
By Kandyang JANSUK
This book is packed with information. Unfortunately the format makes it difficult to read. It is printed with two column per page so each column has very few words and the sentences are broken up into several lines. The text is small. The table of contents has a strange organization so it takes some real searching to locate information on a topic in the book.

Overall the book provides a lot of information at a reasonable cost.
