From Booklist

Ages 5^-8. The poetry doesn't quite scan, but that's more than balanced by Arnold's unusual topic and his hilarious illustrations. A pop-eyed youngster is having a hard time. He seems to be falling apart. After losing a few hairs, he thinks he's going bald; his belly button lint is his stuffing coming out; "a chunk of something gray and wet" from his nose is none other than a piece of his brain; and a loose tooth puts him into shock. "Quite soon I'll be in pieces in / A pile without a shape. / Thank goodness Dad keeps lots and lots / And lots of masking tape." The gross factor is a key ingredient here, with Arnold exploiting it nicely in bold, comical illustrations that catch the full-blown anxieties of the imaginative narrator. When Mom and Dad intervene, little boy and audience alike breathe a sigh of relief. A zany, ultimately reassuring take on something that may indeed be a child's bugaboo. From Kirkus Reviews

Arnold (The Simple People, 1992, etc.) cashes in by grossing out the picture-book set in this story in rhyme, which kids with rough-and-ready sensibilities will relish and fastidious adults will shun, for the same reasons. The goggle-eyed narrator has noticed that he loses hairs, his skin peels, and a tooth is loose, not to mention his discoveries of belly-button lint and nose yuck. He comes to the alarming conclusion that he's going bald and toothless, shedding his skin, losing his stuffing, and his brains are leaking out his nose. His parents reassure him that all these lost parts renew themselves. His response: ``That's really good to hear! Then tell me, what's this yellow stuff I got out of my ear?'' Stupid, silly, and base, in equal measure, this has watercolor illustrations that are textured with colored-pencil curlicues in such a way that they look hairy--like the tangles that clog a shower drain. I'm a Massage Therapist getting ready to enter a PTA program, so this is a required course. The book is interesting enough, but I find most of the information redundant due to the fact that I am already in the field. Just getting through the course. The book is written and presented well. I didn't have a problem understanding some of the language, but for a complete novice it may not give clear, concise explanations on some of the modalities and therapies. Not really sure.
By S. Guest
This book came in very handy for the PTA classes in which I'm currently enrolled. I would highly recommend this as resource for anyone who is pursuing a physical therapy related degree.

Dr B's book is one of the most useful detailed observations about wellness and disease relating to our relationship with water, well correlated and compellingly illustrated with concurring scientific findings--all of which are available in any good medical text on the human physiognomy.

The book covers detailed understandings of water shortage in the body related to asthma, allergies, blood pressure disorders, diabetes, constipation, auto-immune diseases, pain, heartburn, hiatal hernia, colitis, ulcers, rheumatoid arthritis, obesity, depression, gout---the list goes on and contains practically all the well-known and well-experienced villains of ill-health!

Although there are no clinically detailed case studies, for a book of this nature these are not needed. Dr B's observations and references to the relevant current medical teaching make for a solidly convincing case for reversing with water therapy what Dr B calls "Chronic Unintentional Dehydration". Most of our body is composed of water (about 75%). To think that dehydration takes place only when severe symptoms and bodily reactions take place is one the greatest single errors anyone can make as far as health and wellness is concerned. Like Coleridge's ancient mariner, in the present day we seem to be marooned upon a painted ocean going nowhere, losing our health because we have forgotten what it means to drink enough water.

Many people have knocked this finding of Dr B's without going into the merits of the findings that water is a fundamental nutrient for the body, chronic shortfall of which leads to serious dysfunction and disease.

Globalization has become so familiar that it's the target even of street demonstrations from Seattle to Genoa. It challenges traditional social structures, as international systems (such as the European Union, the WTO or the global capital markets) become more powerful than states and governments. This book recalls the traditional social structures to study and develop ways to meet the current urgent global challenges.

Edit of21 Dec 07 to add links and reassert importance of this work.

Of the 1000+ books I have reviewed on Amazon, this is one of a handful that can be considered truly revolutionary. Three others that come instantly to mind are those by Jonathan Schell, The Unconquerable World: Power, Nonviolence, and the Will of the People, William Greider, The Soul of Capitalism: Opening Paths to a Moral Economy, and E.O. Wilson, The Future of Life.

This book is not an easy read. The author, a Professor of Law in the University of Cambridge, wrote an earlier work, Eunomia: New Order for a New World, that has remained similar obscure, and that is a pity, for what I see here is a truly brilliant mind able to suggest that the Congress of Vienna, the current law of nations, and the de-humanization of state to state relations, isolating the internal affairs and inhumanities of state from global public morality and indignation, are the greatest travesty in human history.

The author joins William Greider in suggesting that the state as a corporate personality is as immoral (and irrational in terms of natural law) as is the corporate personality that allows corporations to treat humans as "goods.
I have had this book on perpetual loan from the library, probably becasue I am compelled to re-read it, but I am so ambivalent about it, that I can't bring myself to give it permanent place on my bookshelf. I won't be able to resolve my ambivalence about the book here, but here are some of my comments both on style and substance.

ON STYLE: Along with its prequel "Eunomia" "Health of Nations" (as a quick use of the "Look Inside" function will reveal) stands out for its unusual stylistic conceit, which is particularly unorthodox for the discipline of international law. The risks Allott takes in this regard are actually admirable and inspiring. Because of the absurd civil law vertige that itnernational lawyers have a role in the development of positive law, the discipline tends to encourage formulaic jurisprudence of armchair judiciary. In my view the discipline is important enough that it deserves more "genre" works that explore aspects of the subject with original voices and techniques, and until C. Mieville writes the Great IL Science Fiction Novel, Prof. Allott's two books will probably stand as the most ambitious recent attempts at genre-bending in the discipline (including recent works by D. Kennedy or P. Sands, for example, and I can't think of any older models of hybrid genres since C. Schmitt's "Land and Sea" which we can't quite claim for our discipline anyway). For this reason alone, I would recommend the book to anyone seeking to spend an evening reading outside of a narrow or joyless doctrinal specialization. But though this work-- in turns aphoristic and analytic, Nietzschean and Wittgensteinian-- is original in form, its argument doesn't quite take advantage of any of the virtues of this form.

Review

Blood, milk, and sperm are often seen as embodying the essence of personhood. But in our time they have become the parts of the body most easily stored and exchanged. Banking on the Body uncovers the remarkable story of how body products have been envisioned as civic resources controlled by medical professionals as well as personal property which might be bought and sold by individuals. Original and deeply researched, this book has real significance for how we balance ever-increasing demands for body parts while still preserving our own human values. (Steven Wilf, author of Law’s Imagined Republic: Popular Politics and Criminal Justice in Revolutionary America)

Swanson presents a compelling examination of the process by which sperm, blood, and human milk came to be both ‘gifts’ and commercial products. Deeply researched and clearly argued, this medical history should be read by anyone concerned with the legal and social consequences of body banking. (Janet Golden, author of Message in a Bottle: The Making of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome)

An important study of the way American society has managed and conceptualized the ‘banking’ and distribution of human body products. Swanson explores the parallel but illuminatingly asymmetrical histories of blood, milk, and reproductive cells to undermine the facile if familiar distinction between gift and commodity that has so polarized policy and ethical discussion in this area. A must read for anyone concerned with the ways in which we make policy and shape practice in contemporary medicine. (Charles E. Rosenberg, author of Our Present Complaint: American Medicine, Then and Now)

Since the 1940s, Swanson argues, body banks for breast milk and blood have been ‘omnipresent,’ while attitudes toward them reflect ‘a medical profession unable to resolve its own conflicting commitments to health care access and to individual responsibility to pay for medical services.’ Swanson leads a fascinating journey to the origins of this muddle: from young Bostonian doctor Fritz Talbot’s search for a wet nurse to help save one of his fragile newborn patients to Dr. Bernard Fantus’s pioneering 1930s blood bank at Cook County Hospital in Chicago to the 1950s use of the blood bank model for the management of sperm that organized a practice extant since the late 1800s. A nursing diagnosis is defined as a clinical judgment about individual, family or community responses to actual or potential health problems or life processes which provide the basis for selection of nursing interventions to achieve outcomes for which the nurse has accountability (NANDA-I, 2009). Accurate and valid nursing diagnoses guide the selection of interventions that are likely to produce the desired treatment effects and determine nurse-sensitive outcomes.

Nursing diagnoses are seen as key to the future of evidence-based, professionally-led nursing care – and to more effectively meeting the need of patients. In an era of increasing electronic patient health records, standardized nursing terminologies such as NANDA-I, NIC and NOC provide a means of collecting nursing data that are systematically analysed within and across healthcare organizations and provide essential data for cost/benefit analysis and clinical audit.

Nursing Diagnoses: Definitions and Classification is the definitive guide to nursing diagnoses, as reviewed and approved by NANDA-I. Each nursing diagnosis undergoes a rigorous assessment process by NANDA-I's Diagnosis Development Committee, with stringent criteria used to indicate the strength of the underlying level of evidence.

Each diagnosis comprises a label or name for the diagnosis, a definition, defining characteristics, risk factors and/or related factors. Many diagnoses are further qualified by terms such as risk for, effective, ineffective, impaired, imbalanced, self-care deficit, readiness for, disturbed, decreased, etc.

The 2012-2014 edition is arranged by concept according to Taxonomy II domains, i.e. Health promotion, Nutrition, Elimination and exchange, Activity/Rest, Perception/Cognition, Self-perception, Role relationships, Sexuality, Coping/ Stress tolerance, Life principles, Safety/protection, Comfort, and Growth/development.

The 2012-2014 edition contains revised chapters on NANDA-I taxonomy, and slotting of diagnoses into NANDA & NNN taxonomies, diagnostic reasoning & conceptual clarity, and submission of new/revised diagnoses. New chapters are provided on the use of nursing diagnoses in education, clinical practice, electronic health records, nursing & health care administration, and research . This book is not ebook, which I found very annoying because there is no table of contents or anyway to bookmark pages (that I've discovered). When purchased it can only be accessed through Amazon Cloud Reader (PC) or Amazon Kindle Reader App (smartphone) , which would be fine if it was as easy to navigate as Kobe Reader. I am not sure if its just how this book is set-up or if it is the application that is used to read it; in either case there is no table of contents icon with the Kindle app. So, I have to scroll a bar on the bottom of the page to roughly the beginning and then go page-to-page to find the section I want to be in. This is painful due to the nature of this book: finding nursing diagnoses. When you want to find a diagnosis, you must scroll to the beginning of the book and then search page-to-page to find the diagnosis you are looking for. And there is no back button to the previous page, so if you hit the wrong diagnosis, you must start the process over by scrolling back to the beginning of the book.

As for the content, it is very helpful and informative to any nursing student including definition, defining characteristics and related/risk factors of most diagnoses. The navigation system makes it difficult to browse through the book to find this very useful information.

If you are willing to put up with the crappy navigation and the limited accessibility (for those without smartphones) then this would be a smart purchase for any nursing student.
By Fireflycross
The definitive book on nursing knowledge - what nurses KNOW versus just what they DO - explains the problems that nurses identify, diagnose and use in practice. The provision of the underlying knowledge (not just the diagnosis label, but also the definition, defining characteristics or risk factors (things we identify in assessments) and the related factors (those things we try to intervene upon) is critical for ensuring documentation in electronic health records that supports nursing's view of the patient. Without this, the EHRs will only show medical care - and we all know that the medical diagnosis may be the primary reason the patient ends up seeking care, but it is their nursing needs that keep them in the hospital - if we do not clearly identify them, nurses will end up losing their profession to technicians who implement medical interventions....and ultimately, patients will lose!

This follow-up to Meliora Press's 2010 biography of John Romano and George Engel examines the enduring impact of the biopsychosocial approach to medicine pioneered by these two University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) physicians. The book traces the evolution at the URMC of the biopsychosocially related curriculum, which emphasizes patient-physician communication and patient-centered interviews, as well as the central values of professionalism, self-awareness, humanism, compassion, honesty, and integrity. It reports on the noted positive effects of the curriculum on URMC students' abilities to communicate with and assess patients. It also looks at the continuing work in biopsychosocial medicine of those who trained under Engel and Romano, as well as how the biopsychosocial approach has been adopted by medical professionals across the United States and internationally. Finally, the authors examine evaluations of the biopsychosocial model among clinicians and scholars, concluding that the extraordinarily rich legacy of Engel and Romano will continue to illuminate our understanding of health, illness, and the practice of medicine, benefiting future generations of physicians and their patients. Diane S. Morse is Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Medicine at the School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC). Katherine R. Johnson is a freelance editor and writer. Jules Cohen, Professor of Medicine (Cardiology), is former senior associate dean for medical education at URMC.

Praised in the first edition for the clarity of his general framework for conceptualizing meta-analysis, Rosenthal's revised edition covers the latest techniques in the field, such as a new effect size indicator for one size data, a new coefficient of robustness of replication, new procedures for combining and comparing effect sizes for multiple dependent variables, and new data on the magnitude of the problem of incomplete retrieval (the file drawer problem).

Whether you are simply interested in an ability to understand meta-analytic studies or have already published such works, this small text will be of great assistance. The author provides clear and concise discussion of all the relevant issues including valuable formulas for obtaining effect sizes from various tests of significance, procedures for appropriately combining effect sizes and testing for significance, and an interesting discussion of the binomial effect size display. While such information and methods are available elsewhere, I have never seen such a clear and concise presentation. There is also an excellent discussion of the file-drawer problem and alternatives for addressing it. In short, this is an elegant work that belongs on the shelves of any life-long student of the social sciences!
By Greg M Reger
I found this book very clear and practical. Even for students not interested in doing their own meta-analysis, understanding the basics:

1) Makes it easier to include the statistics needed for others to include your research in a meta-analysis
2) Aides in understanding meta-analytic review papers
3) Emphasizes the importance of replication---no single study no matter how well designed or how statistically "significant" the results, should be regarded as conclusive until it has been replicated.

Dr. Rosenthal is a researcher in psychology, but there are also examples from other fields and I think that social scientists in general and basic medical researchers would find this useful.

It is great as a reference but unless you are in medical school, the reading level is above a medical professional of the allied health fields.

From Publishers Weekly

The author, a physician trained in Iran (Your Body's Many Cries for Water), not only believes that drinking water is healthy, but makes extravagant claims for its curative powers. He recounts here how he first discovered the healing abilities of water, when he was a political prisoner more than 20 years ago. While incarcerated, he successfully treated with plain water the stress-induced peptic ulcers that afflicted some of his fellow prisoners. According to Batmanghelidj, most people rely on dry mouth to signal thirst and as a result are seriously dehydrated. He posits that symptoms like fatigue, anxiety or depression indicate dehydration, which may result in serious conditions such as asthma, hypertension, brain damage, cancer, constipation, allergies and obesity. In order to compensate for fluid lost through urination, respiration, and perspiration, Batmanghelidj suggests drinking a minimum of two quarts of plain water daily (not alcohol, caffeine beverages or juices). In order to maintain good health, he also advises ingesting half a teaspoon of salt to balance water intake. In addition, a diet consisting of 80% fruits and vegetables and 20% protein should be followed along with an exercise program. To back up his theories, the author presents a wealth of somewhat confusing medical data as well as patient anecdotes that testify to water as a cure for various diseases. Batmanghelidj does state, however, that those diagnosed with specific conditions should not stop taking their medications abruptly, nor should they embark on a water regime until they have consulted with their physician. This controversial program will have the greatest appeal for devotees of alternative medicine.
