The second edition of the current leading nursing text in curriculum development and evaluation continues to serve nurse educators in academic settings as well as in the practice arena. It is a practical guide for developing, revising, and evaluating nursing curricula and educational programs, complete with case studies and details on conducting a needs assessment to determine the extent of revision necessary within current curricula.

This text focuses on evidence-based practice, safety and quality assurance concepts, and the role of creative and critical-thinking aspects. It highlights NLN and AACN core competencies in developing and evaluating curricula in all levels of nursing programs. Additionally, it includes a comprehensive list of critical evaluation and accreditation tips, directions on how to prepare for an accreditation visit, and two proposed curricula for nurse educators to consider adapting into educational materials.

Key features:

  • Discusses the continuing growth of technology and its application in nursing programs
  • Examines health care reform legislation that is expected to change the way care is delivered
  • Contains updates on the continuing career-ladder and entry-level issues related to nursing
  • Provides details on pedagogical methods, objectives, discussion points, learning activities, and references
  • Includes a glossary of commonly used terms in curriculum development and evaluation

This revised edition further examines several major objectives of the text, including major milestones for the past 100 years in the American nursing education system, program review and accreditation processes, and evaluating current trends in nursing education and their role in curriculum development.

Curriculum Development and Evaluation in Nursing by Sarah B. Keating (ed.) (2006) has seven sections and 15 chapters as a practical guide for developing curricula at the ADN, BSN, entry level masters, specialty and advanced practice masters, and doctoral programs. Section one is introduction to the history of curriculum development and faculty role. Section two is about learning theories, education taxonomies, and critical thinking. Section three presents the external and internal frame factors for conducting a needs assessment for reviewing and developing curricula. Section four, curriculum development, addresses undergraduate and graduate components of the curriculum. Section five, curriculum and program evaluation, covers master planning for program and curriculum evaluation, application of educational evaluation models, and planning for accreditation. Section six adapts curriculum development and evaluation to staff development and client-centered health education. Section seven reveals issues and trends in curriculum development and evaluation. The chapters are written by 12 contributing authors. Keating writes "A curriculum is the formal plan of study that provides the philosophical underpinning, goals, and guidelines for the delivery of a specific educational program." Faculty is responsible and need a view of the curriculum as a whole. History is a strength of the book. Authors address the transformative and constructivist learning theories, the use of technology to deliver the curriculum, distance education and the measurement of program outcomes as part of total quality management. Both formal and informal curricula are diagramed. Chapters have a summary, discussion questions, learning activities, faculty learning activities and references.

This workbook does help learn the material. The answers are in the back for guidance. The only problem with that is some of the answers referred to a textbook page in lieu of actually giving the answer and those page numbers weren't always accurate.
By Hrmn315
Book was as described and so much cheaper than the school bookstore. Shipping was pretty fast as well, the only drawback is I have to do the work(lol).

I used many of the blueprints books during my clincal rotations in medical school. This one was by far the worst one. The information is more of a cursory overview of several topics. There is just not enough scope or detail in this book for it to be useful. I used this book in conjunction with "Surgical Recall" which is an excellent book. I also referred to the "Essential of General Surgery" book on some specific topics such as fluid and electrolyte management that are not well covered in either book.

Perhaps future editions of this book will be better.

Got Davis, NCLEX-RN review book recently. I have just not been a big fan of Saunders. Don't ask me why, i have way too many reasons. Now to what I have found good about this book so far. Love the color combination as it is soothing to my eyes, they are not too distracting or annoying- does that even matter to all, but it matters to me. The review of content in this book is really good. It's simplified to just the major areas on the NCLEX RN exam which makes the book not as bulky as Saunder's. Even though you join another course or if you are just following a plan to do just tons of questions and go take the exam, you will always need a book to refer. And this book does it for me. At the back of the book it also has a plan for those of us who really don't know where to begin. The CD is an added bonus, it is formulated and organized to stimulate a mind and prioritize on those areas one needs to work on. So overall a great book and better than the other books out there. Thank you Sally Lambert Langerquist for this great handy NCLEX-RN review book.
By Lia
I love all the questions that come on the CD. It allows you to set up a quiz with you choice of subject(s) and the number of questions. Gives you rational for why the correct answer it correct and the other choices are not the best choice. Also keeps time of how long it took you to answer all the questions so you can see how well you manage your time. Its great practice for the NCLEX-RN exam because it allows to do hundreds of questions on a computer.

After hearing several positive things about Blueprints Psychiatry, I decided to go to the store and buy it. Didn't want to work too hard, didn't want to look like a total moron. Then I picked it up, and I think I've seen bulkier books written by another doctor (Seuss, that is). But brevity isn't necessarily bad, so I checked it out at the library instead and read it in 3 days of semi-hard studying. Yeah... I think should've gone with the other book, Green Eggs and Ham.

The problem with Blueprints is that it largely rehashes DSM-IV guidelines. That's OK, and it's a big part of psych, but you can get that with the Current Clinical guidelines pocketbook. What I was really expecting/wanting was something that (1) had bits of annoying trivia pertinent to the exam (2) more information on psychoactive drugs (3) described in more detail patient presentations and (4) discussed how other medical diseases could present like psych disorders. Blueprints skims these issues.

I would buy First Aid for the Psych Clerkship instead. It's a quick read as well but provides more info. I had a good score on the psych shelf, and I think switching primary sources had a great deal to do with it. If you like the Blueprints series, just check it out or borrow it from a friend. Blueprints Q&A, though, is an excellent question resource.
By 46&2
This book is concise and easy to read to cover psychiatry for USMLE step 2. The description of each topics are straight to the point, and focusing on the details that appear in the exam. The biggest weak point of this book is that it lacks clinical viganettes, so it can be hard for you to get the image of each disorders. So if you can get one of those clinical viganette books, that will be perfect. Additionally, they are missing some important topics, such as sleeping disorders, but still, this is the best available at this point.

I utilized this text for my microbiology class in undergrad. It lists the major parasites, molds and bacteria. Parasites were the most interesting because it shows you what foods are associated with what parasite. Pretty gross stuff but was not boring at all. I also used:

Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Question and Answers, isbn 0971999635, to help me with test preparation. The questions were quite similar to what I found on my college microbiology tests. Both books helped me to achieve very good scores on my tests.
By Dana B.
The text in this book is fantastic, very clear and concise - easy for a student (like me) to read on their own and get a very clear understanding of. The book covers everything from the discovery of microorganisms to viruses, bacteria, protazoa, prions and the chemistry in cellular metabolism.
Chapter listing:
Microbiology - The Science
Microscopy
Cell Structure and Taxonomy
Diversity of Microorganisms Part 1
Diversity of Microorganisms Part 2
Biochemistry
Microbial Physiology and Genetics
Controlling Microbial Growth in Vitro
Using Antimicrobial Agents to Control Microbial Groth in Vivo
Microbial Ecology
Epidemiology and Public Health
Healthcare Epidemiology: Nosocomial Infections and Infection Control
Diagnosing Infectious Diseases
Pathogens of Infectious Diseases
Nonspecific Host Defense Mechanisms
Specific Host Defense Mechanisms: An Introduction to Immunology
Major Viral, Bacterial, and Fungal Diseases of Humans
Major Parasitic Diseases of Humans: An Introduction to Medical Parasitology

So you can see, this book covers a variety of topics - and is a fantastic introduction to the field of microbiology. The negatives of using this book - if you are a visual learner the diagrams are sub-par at best. Now I'm not talking about the tables, the tables are fantastic. The diagrams are minimal, and not very helpful. I am lucky in that my Micro professor has overheads of the diagrams from a different book that he uses.

This is a very good review book for the RNC exam. If you are studying for the Maternal Newborn Exam, you will only need to study the 2nd half of the book, beginning at page 299. There are very few diagrams in this book and there were several topics that really needed diagrams to enhance understanding. I also wished they would have provided reasons why an answer was either correct or incorrect.
By Stacy Leeber
I believe this book is a great review for any OB nurse, or brand new OB nurse looking for all information in one place. I would prefer a different format, one with complete explanations of everything. It kind of reads like a care plan and that is not my favorite--but all the information you need is there. Hopefully it will give me everything I need to pass my certification course and test.

I even hate giving this book 1 star it doesnt deserve it. We just finished this book in my 3rd quarter of nursing school and let me tell you it was awful trying to pass the tests. This book gives the instructors a test bank of 200 questions but to answer them you have to remember every single word in the book in order to pass the exams. Even our straight "A" students were getting "C's" and "D's". They had us take the first exam twice since over 3/4 of all the students failed, and the same with the 3rd test, had to give a 20pt extra credit open book quiz just to help with the grades. When you read it, it doesnt seem that bad very informative but its still very hard to answer those test bank questions. You have to know a specific word in a specific chapter in a specfic sentence to get it right. Then alot of the questions have 2 answers that are practically the same just a diffenent type of way if saying it. Trust me it was AWFUL!! Thank goodness this class ended this week!!! Good Luck is all I can say!!!
