TheConcise Rules of APA Style, sixth edition offers essential writing and formatting standards for students, teachers, researchers, and clinicians in the social and behavioral sciences. This easy-to-use pocket guide, compiled from the sixth edition of thePublication Manual of the American Psychological Association, provides complete guidance on the rules of style that are critical for clear communication. Readers will learn how to avoid the grammatical errors most commonly reported by journal editors; how to choose the appropriate format for statistics, figures, and tables; how to credit sources and avoid charges of plagiarism; and how to construct a reference list through a wide variety of examples and sources.

In addition to guidance on grammar points that have challenged writers in the social sciences, theConcise Rulesprovides suggestions for reducing bias in language; reviews the mechanics of style for punctuation, spelling, capitalization, abbreviation, italicization, headings, and quotations; examines the preferred use of numbers as well as standards for metrication and statistics; provides guidance on the construction and formatting of tables, figures, and appendixes; and offers clear examples and models for citing sources and constructing error-free reference lists.

How does theConcise Rulesdiffer from thePublication Manual of the American Psychological Association? ThePublication Manualremains the best source for broad background information about scientific publishing. It provides detailed guidance on publication ethics, journal article reporting standards, and the process of journal publication. TheConcise Rules, by comparison, targets only those rules writers need for choosing the best words and format for their articles. It offers a comprehensive list of essential writing standards in a convenient, easily retrievable format.

Available in a light-weight, spiral-bound format, theConcise Ruleswill travel easily from home to school to office. It will be an invaluable reference tool for all social science scholars who are serious about communicating clearly and effectively.
Key to this edition is an updated and expanded APA Style website, with many additional resources to help readers learn APA style, including free tutorials, on-line courses, frequently asked questions, sample papers, and the APA Style blog.

The sixth edition ofConcise Ruleshas been revised and updated to include
simplified APA heading style to make it more conducive to electronic publication;
updated guidelines for reducing bias in language to reflect current practices and preferences, including a new section on presenting historical language that is inappropriate by present standards;
new guidelines for reporting inferential statistics and a significantly revised table of statistical abbreviations;
a new discussion on the use of online supplemental materials, including lengthy data sets and other media, to enrich the published article;
significantly expanded content on the electronic presentation of data to help readers understand the purpose of each kind of display and choose the best match for communicating the results of the investigation, with new examples for a variety of data displays, including electrophysiological and biological data;
an expanded discussion of electronic sources, emphasizing the role of the digital object identifier (DOI) as a reliable way to locate information; and
a wealth of new reference examples, with a focus on new electronic formats.

New and experienced readers alike will find the sixth edition a complete resource for writing with clarity and precision.

This book is great for someone who is familiar with APA, but if you are just learning, I would look for another book as this one can be difficult to navigate and lacks any visual examples.
By Robert Forney
According to the APA website, the 1st printing of the Concise Rules has 'minor' typos. I have just gone through a tedious process, over about 3 hours, noting corrections for 'minor' typos in the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition, first printing. I ordered the Concise Rules but will return in to the sender, if it is a 1st printing. The APA web site states that the main errors are in the sample papers, in the Manual, and that the other errors are minor. There are multiple minor errors that are very tedious to deal with.

I was very unsure about this diet at first, as it seemed to clash so strongly with so many of the wonderful health and diet books I had been reading.

Wahls recommendation of a low fat diet that was also very low in saturated fat is the opposite of what highly respected lipid expert Mary Enig PhD recommends, and what is recommended - based on a ton of very convincing evidence - in so many other great books based on maintaining or regaining health through eating the diet our bodies have evolved to do best on, such as Primal Body- Primal Mind, Primal Blueprint, The Perfect Health Diet, Eat Fat-Lose Fat, The GAPS diet and others.

So when a friend told me that in fact Dr Wahls has very much changed her stance on fats and saturated fat and now recommends cooking with healthy fats such as coconut oil, butter/ghee (from grassfed cows) and lard, I was really happy to hear it!

With that one big issue resolved, this is a diet that tallies hugely with what some of the very best experts in this field are saying and combines the best of what many excellent nutrition books have to say into one dietary plan that I feel is really the best diet out there for anyone battling a serious disease. It is just excellent. I recommend following it if you are ill, very highly.

Patients need to read up online about the changes Wahl has made in addition to reading this book, or else just get the information of the diet online while making sure it is up-to-date. (I hope so much that those that have written very pro-low fat fat diet comments about this book on the reviews page will read this updated information somehow. The right fats in the diet are so essential for healing, and for proper mitochondrial function.
Dr Terry Wahls, Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Iowa, is an inspiration. She was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2000, and within three years had become wheelchair dependent in the secondary progressive phase of the disease. Her rapid descent into disability was a strong motivation to begin to delve into the scientific literature around MS. Terry began to assemble literature around the health of mitochondria. These little (about 5micrometres diameter) structures live inside our cells and convert food into energy. It is quite likely that over evolution, these tiny particles originated as bacteria that learned how to live symbiotically in cells as organisms grew more and more complex. They play very important roles not only in energy production for cells, but in cell death and ageing. Terry became convinced after reviewing the literature that mitochondrial health was intimately tied up with MS, and set about devising a program to improve the health of her mitochondria. The nutritional program she produced has many similarities with other ultra-healthy diets that have been shown to produce marked improvements in other chronic western diseases. She also added electrical stimulation in an attempt to encourage muscles suffering from disuse to get accustomed to activity again.
The results were astonishing. Six months after starting the program, she attempted to ride a bicycle again, in a year she completed an 18 mile bicycle tour, and now she is fully mobile. Terry chose to spread the word rather than be content with her own improvement.

This book is easy to read, providing a broad overview of contemporary behaviour therapy issues. Having read it cover to cover, I would recommend this book be read in conjunction with further, more detailed texts to flush out the finer details as the authors cover a number of therapy and models generally without going into much depth. However as a general introductory text, the authors have in my opinion delivered a useful package with elements of behaviour therapy successfully complimented by real-life examples of case studies and useful end-of-chapter summaries. The textbook comes with an additional student resource materials/participation worksheet booklet which unfortunately I did not find useful. A good book for the undergraduate level.

Curricular changes in the health professions, coupled with a growing acceptance of the Internet as a tool for daily living, have contributed to a climate of change and opportunity for health sciences libraries. A Guide to Developing End User Education Programs in Medical Libraries will help graduate students in library science, entry-level medical librarians, and experienced educators to understand best practices and to build, expand, and improve medical library-sponsored educational programs.

A Guide to Developing End User Education Programs in Medical Libraries is designed to aid and inform professionals who develop, teach, or evaluate end-user education programs in health sciences libraries. Eighteen case studies represent the ideas and approaches of more than fifteen private and public institutions in the United States and the Caribbean. The studies focus on effective end-user programs for medical information electives, veterinary medicine programs, health care informatics, and evidence-based medicine, plus instructional programs for teaching residents, ThinkPad-facilitated instruction, and more. The guide also examines how several medical libraries have created and expanded their end-user education programs.

The contributors to A Guide to Developing End User Education Programs in Medical Libraries are health sciences librarians from teaching hospitals, medical/dental/veterinary schools, and health professions-focused universities in a dozen U.S. states and the West Indies. Each of them is involved in designing, teaching, and evaluating user education.

This book will help you educate students of medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy, dentistry, and veterinary medicine, plus residents and practicing health professionals. The educational objectives and approaches in the case studies include:
  • clinical medical librarianship
  • integrating informatics objectives into curricula
  • developing credit and non-credit coursework
  • distance learning
  • using new and emerging technologies to improve instruction
The case studies in A Guide to Developing End User Education Programs in Medical Libraries follow a format similar to that of the structured abstract, including introduction, setting, educational approaches, evaluation methods, future plans, conclusion, and references. Some are illustrated with tables and figures. Several are supplemented by material in chapter-specific appendixes. Further information about specific classes, programs, or teaching philosophies is made available via Web sites featured in the book.

Let this valuable guide help you—and your institution—take advantage of the opportunities available at this exciting time in the evolution of library science!

From Booklist

Dysfunctional and undisciplined. That is Goldhill’s assessment of the current U.S. health-care system. President and CEO of the Game Show Network, Goldhill believes the trouble stems from “a culture lacking customer accountability: high prices, excess, errors, underinvestment in information technology, lack of follow-up.” Spurred by the death of his father from a hospital-acquired infection, Goldhill has devoted considerable time and thought to repairing health care. His book sprouted from a 2009 article he penned for the Atlantic. Encounters with the health-care system usually involve gargantuan intermediaries—Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance companies, entities Goldhill cites for inefficiency. They also generate increased demand for services. His alternative to the status quo combines national health insurance (for everyone but not everything) with a market-based system that gets rid of intermediaries and allows individuals to deal directly with providers. Individual health accounts, catastrophic insurance with a high deductible, and health loans are key components. The health-care system is gashed. Goldhill thinks it’s time to rip off the colossal Band-Aid and apply a different kind of balm. --Tony Miksanek

Review

Praise for David Goldhill's Catastrophic Care

“A devastating and utterly original analysis of what has gone wrong with the American health care system. Read it, and take a deep breath. . . . [Goldhill] will convince you that our ‘solutions’ are not solving our problems. They are making our problems worse.”
—Malcolm Gladwell

“Thought provoking. . . . A for-profit business executive who actually states that better than adequate health care should be available to all people in the country. . . . Mr. Goldhill observes and explains the issues in an understandable manner for the layperson.”
New York Journal of Books

“The best popular health care book . . . a crystal clear account of what has gone wrong and how to fix it.”
—Tyler Cowen, Holbert L. Harris Professor of Economics, George Mason University

“Powerful—edge-of-the-seat riveting—because it is not, in any sense, a policy book. Rather, this is a story about saving ourselves. . . . It steps outside of the established political debate and lexicon—one of the rare books addressing a major national policy issue that is able to do so in language not already debased by the problem itself. . . . Alas, healthcare civilians can't actually read most books about healthcare (and if you can, then you are part of the problem). But you can read this one.”
—Michael Wolff, The Guardian

“David Goldhill is a genius observer of a broken system in need of fresh ideas. His testimony and common-sense ideas are devastatingly important in light of out-of-control medical prices. A must-read for doctors, policy-makers and patients alike. Catastrophic Care is a defining book of our era, and a roadmap for fixing our country's leading debt driver. You will never see medical care the same way.”
—Marty Makary, MD, author of Unaccountable: What Hospitals Won't Tell You and How Transparency Can Revolutionize Healthcare

“For those who are troubled by both the failures of our healthcare system and the misdirected diagnoses and prescriptions offered by pundits, policy experts, and politicians from across the political spectrum, David Goldhill offers a brilliant and much needed antidote. By calling out with remarkable clarity the numerous, but now almost invisible incentives and regulations that drive the dysfunction of our current system, Catastrophic Care provides an illuminating framework for understanding the crisis, and then a path to the kinds of reforms that will surely be necessary.”
—Jeffrey S. Flier, Dean of the Faculty, Harvard Medical School

“[A] fascinating and infuriating expose of the American health care system . . . Goldhill persuasively argues that a consumer-driven system—which will require greater vigilance and commitment on the part of citizens in actively managing their health—is the first step toward sustainability and lower individual and government costs. . . . Goldhill's reasoned, logical alternative to the current system goes beyond political finger-pointing, and while his take is sobering, it’s one that offers sound solutions.”
Publishers Weekly

“Highly readable presentation of one businessman’s solution, likely to provoke discussion if not agreement.”

I was really disappointed (and surprised) to open this $160 textbook (in 2011) and find all the pages are printed in black and white. Give me a break. There is a small insert section of about a dozen pages that has color pictures of some meats and vegetables. That's it. The other other ~700 pages, the actual textbook content, is all grayscale! There is a lot of information in this book, with a lot of diagrams, and photos of a many foods, ingredients and techniques. And it's all in black and white. Students deserve better, especially for the high cost.

There are few other annoyances with this book, sorry. In some chapters the author includes a "Professional Profile" where she highlights careers in the food industry. Several of these furtive advertisements are for big snack food and processed-food conglomerates, including Kellog, Kraft and Wrigley. For me, it felt like a strange choice for a nutrition textbook. I found myself wondering if the author had been compensated by any of the companies? I would have preferred to read about some of the many nutrition careers with organic/local businesses, education/school lunch, or the National Health Service Corps...or even the military; instead of snack food companies.

One other oddity I can remember. In the section about coffee, the author mentions and describes many ways of brewing (drip, espresso, percolator, vacuum, etc.), but excludes the French press. As far I know this is still a very popular method of brewing coffee.

Anyway, I'm nitpicking with that one. My main gripe is that for such a high sales price the publisher only provided black & white content. The content is informative. However, I feel that the subjects of food and science should be printed in color to help convey the information.

This is good book for Dietetic and Culinary professionals. It is written in a form that is easy to understand. I will be keeping this book in my collection.

Review

“Russ Harris is an open, centered, and engaged teacher of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and, in ACT Made Simple, he succeeds in delivering a transparent account of a complex and powerful treatment. I recommend this book to mental health and medical providers and to their teachers.”
— Patricia J. Robinson, Ph.D., coauthor of Behavioral Consultation and Primary Care and The Mindfulness and Acceptance Workbook for Depression

“ACT Made Simple is simply the most accessible book written to date for therapists interested in learning ACT. Russ Harris explains ACT concepts in a style that is both engaging and straightforward. His advice on overcoming therapy roadblocks is invaluable and will be useful to both novice and experienced ACT practitioners.”
— Jason B. Luoma, Ph.D., psychologist at Portland Psychotherapy Clinic, Research, and Training Center

“Perhaps the most elegant, easily digestible book on using the principles of mindfulness and acceptance to improve your own life and the lives of others. Inside are a litany of creative exercises and strategies that are ready for immediate use. But none of the benefits would be possible without the supportive, entertaining voice of Russ Harris. There is something new to be learned with each reading.”
— Todd B. Kashdan, Ph.D., professor of psychology at George Mason University and author of Curious? Discover the Missing Ingredient to a Fulfilling Life

“ACT aims to increase psychological flexibility. Learn from this book and you'll be doing ACT rather than just talking about doing ACT. And you’ll be doing it with greaterflexibility.”
— Hank Robb, Ph.D., ABPP

“Let’s face it: psychological concerns are complex. If modern behavior therapy is to rise to the occasion of reducing human suffering, it will require a similarly intricate and comprehensive approach. ACT attempts to provide a multifaceted treatment model to address these complexities, and ACT Made Simple has risen to the occasion by reducing the difficulties in understanding the unique ACT approach. Harris’s expressive style is matchless. Comprehensive scientific and clinical literature rarely reads this well. This is a clear, understandable introduction to a powerful intervention approach. Many practitioners who are new to ACT will want to start with ACT Made Simple.”
— Daniel J. Moran, Ph.D., BCBA, coauthor of ACT in Practice

“This much-needed book is a must for mental health clinicians interested in learning ACT. True to his physician roots, Harris has taken a very practical approach to understanding ACT. He does a wonderful job of taking complicated ACT concepts and making them easy to understand. His writing is full of wit, self-disclosure, and down-to-earth communication. Readers of this book will finish it with a much better understanding of core ACT principles and interventions.”
— Kirk D. Strosahl, Ph.D., coauthor of The Mindfulness and Acceptance Workbook for Depression

“For newcomers to ACT, there is no better place to start than with this book. Russ Harris masterfully makes ACT come alive with an accessible writing style and illustrative examples of its application in alleviating a wide range of types of human suffering. Practical tips and homework assignments throughout will actively engage you to go beyond merely reading about ACT and begin to apply it to your own life and in your work with clients. For those who may have been holding out for ACT for Dummies, the wait is over. This book is for you!”
— Robert Zettle, Ph.D., professor of psychology at Wichita State University and author of ACT for Depression

“For those of you who train or supervise nurses, physicians, social workers, or other professionals unffamiliar with psychological lingo, ACT Made Simple is a must. Russ Harris has succeeded in the challenge of translating difficult psychological concepts embedded in ACT into plain, colorful, diverse language that anyone working clinically will understand. Each section is simply organized, easy to follow, and user-friendly. Harris has included highly useful sections of practical tips and common pitfalls that even the trained ACT therapist will find useful. I highly recommend ACT Made Simple as a primer for ACT training.”
— JoAnne Dahl, Ph.D., author of The Art and Science of Valuing in Psychotherapy

I bought this book, so I'm using it, but finding its helpfulness to be uneven. Some of the info seems to be either slightly outdated or at least has large gaps. For example, I've just used it to review Type II diabetes meds we were given in lecture, and it doesn't have any info at all about 2 of the 5 categories of NIDDM drugs I'm supposed to be familiar with. It also has an awful lot of typos, which disappoints me that it seems nobody proofread it with much care.
On the positive side, I do think the little drawings and mnemonics will help me remember the info I find helpful. So it isn't worthless, but I hope to eventually find a better pharm review book.

I bought this book as a prep for the NCLEX. However, there is so much information to know on these drugs that it's impossible to memorize. I studied just the classification of drugs, with an emphasis on Digox, Heparin, Coumadin, and the classes of antibiotics. Know the theraputic and toxic levels of digoxin, know the loading does and the maintenance doses too. Know the Ptt for heparin and Pt for coumadin, know the antidotes. Finally know the classes of antibiotics, and lab values to watch for, namely BUN and creatinine. These are the drug issues that are stressed for the NCLEX, in all of the prep books I used.

While this is a good resource book to sit on the shelf, it is not an interesting, insightful, or enjoyable read. It is one of the most boring textbooks I have ever had to read. My professor was right: I will use this when I am a practitioner, but as a student, it is tough to get through. There are MANY, MANY spelling mistakes. Whoever edited this book should be ashamed. I can't wait until I am done this class so i never have to read through the book again. STUDENT TIP: Don't bother reading each chapter in its entirety; only read the summaries at the end of each chapter.
By I Heart Public Health
I found this book to be moderately helpful, although I found the format to be somewhat cubersome and confusing. In order to successfully write an evaluation proposal I had to use this book in tandem with other resources. There are plenty of foundations that offer step-by-step guidelines for conducting an evaluation, for free. This book is not worth its cost.

Review

"'Influenza 1918 argues that historians have ignored the long-term consequences of short-term but serious health crises such as the influenza epidemic of 1918. By focusing on Winnipeg, Esyllt W. Jones traces the familiar repercussions of losing a loved one and how it impinged on the social welfare responsibilities of the city for many years. This is a well written, engaging, and timely study that should appeal to anyone interested in the history of the working class, women, medicine, and family.' Explore a wealth of ideas, insights, and approaches that can be used or adapted by any medical library!

THanks, this is well worth renting over buying, i hope more students take advantage of this program over getting ripped off by buying.

I bought this book used but to my surprise it came in excellent condition as tho it was new. No markings of any sort.
This will help me a lot in my class and possibly pass this on to someone in need for this great instructional material.
This was well written and easy to understand for a subject that needs a lot of analytical thinking for one to be able to
process. Thanks Amazon for carrying this text book.
