Prehospital Trauma Life Support, Seventh Edition by American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma is an excellent resource on prehospital care. PHTLS is well written and very comprehensive providing great information on the most current accepted prehospital protocols.
Aspects of the book that I like:
+ Many of the chapters start with a "Scenario" and end with a "Scenario Solution" which add to the relevance of the material that is being taught.
+ Chapter 4 on Kinematics of Trauma is a very detailed and relevant chapter explaining how different types of trauma cause different types of injuries. Mechanism of injury is covered in detail to give the first responder an indication of different types of injuries to expect based on how the injury was acquired. This chapter was done very well and covers blunt trauma, penetrating trauma, and the laws of energy and motion.
+ Quality photographs, drawings, and charts are used throughout the book. Realistic photos are used which provides the reader with the graphic reality of traumatic injuries.
+ Many of the chapters have a "Specific Skills" section which provides step by step instructions on how to accomplish certain tasks such as inserting a nasopharyngeal airway, supraglottic airway, needle cricothyrotomy and percutaneous transtracheal ventilation, intraosseous vascular access, cervical collar sizing and application, helmet removal and more. Photographs are also used which is helpful for the visual learner.
+ Chapter 8 on Shock advocates for the use of tourniquets and hemostatic agents when appropriate. There was a time when tourniquets were mentioned as an afterthought but no longer. The book accurately states, "Used properly, tourniquets are not only safe, but also lifesaving.
