This is a compact book following the same formula for the other manuals from this collection (Ex Washington manual). It is not a treatise and it is not intended to be so, quite the contrary. It is a pocket book, easy to carry and to manipulate. It cover all the topics you might need for your day to day life in the hospital in a short , but not too short, and up to date format. I like the fact that you can read any chapter in less than 30 minutes. I recommend this book for medical students in need of a compact book to carry during the GOB internship or for revising topics before an exam.
By Mike_brazil
I think my entire class of OB-GYN residents bought this our intern year. I still use it now as a third year. It covers a lot of the information you can get pimped on, and explains it well. It is small enough to carry around, so those slow rotations, where you have 5-10 minutes throughout the day, this is a good resource. The only negative things I notice is that there is a lot of information, so you have to read instead of skim. And the book cannot fit into my white coat pocket. But definately one of the books I rely upon.

Handbook of Evidence-Based Radiation Oncology

Building on the success of this book's first edition, Dr. Eric Hansen and Dr. Mack Roach have updated, revised, and expanded the Handbook of Evidence-based Radiation Oncology, a portable reference that utilizes evidence-based medicine as the basis for practical treatment recommendations and guidelines. Organized by body site, concise clinical chapters provide easy access to critical information. Important "pearls" of epidemiology, anatomy, pathology, and clinical presentation are highlighted. Key facets of the work-up are listed, followed by staging and/or risk classification systems. Treatment recommendations are discussed based on stage, histology, and/or risk classification. Brief summaries of key trials and studies provide rationale for the recommendations. Practical guidelines for radiation techniques are described. Finally, complications and follow-up guidelines are outlined. Updates from the first edition include brand new color figures and color contouring mini-atlases for head and neck, gastrointestinal, prostate, and gynecological tumors; redesigned tables for increased readability; new chapters on management of the neck and unknown primary, clinical radiobiology, and pediatric malignancies and benign conditions; and new appendices including the American College of Radiology guidelines for administration of IV contrast.

Eric Hansen and UCSF have done a great service to residents in radiation oncology with this book. Each chapter has what they call "pearls" (need-to-know general information) followed by work up, staging and then the studies section. The studies cover the important trials for each disease site with what ends up being perhaps too little editorializing. There are treatment "guidelines" listed by stage. At the end of the book, there is an appendix filled with helpful medications and abbreviations. It's up to date and fits well in the coat pocket. It is most useful if you have a baseline knowledge of the data but even on its own, it's very helpful. Given the lack of similar available books, this is a well done much needed addition.
By N. Martin
An extremely comprehensive handbook for radiation oncology providing an excellent overview of the individual cancer specific sites as well as references and summaries of appropriate, important and key articles. Dr. Roach and Dr. Hansen in addition to all of the contributing physicians have done an outstanding job providing a thorough yet readable handbook for radiation oncologists.

I own and use the NIV, NASB, NKJV, RSV and NRSV study Bibles and three Life Amplification Bibles. While each of these Study Bibles have their individual strengths and weaknesses, all are indeed helpful in understanding the everlasting messages given to us from God. It is not my intention to critique each version in detail. My purpose for this review is to, hopefully, add some information a first time Study Bible buyer might find useful.
Of the Study and Life Amplification Bibles I own, Dr. Scofield's is my personal favorite for several reasons. I will briefly describe those reasons.
A] Some Study Bibles somewhat overwhelm the reader with information while others are far too abbreviated. Since the foregoing statement is a personal opinion, I will not name the too much and too little Study Bibles. I do not want to add more confusion to a selection so important to one's spiritual growth. Dr. Scofield's essays, commentaries and explanations are an excellent middle ground to the above listed pros and cons.
B] All study expositions are thoughtfully placed on the same page - bottom - of the passages they refer to. As way of example, Dr. Scofield lists the Greek, Aramaic and Hebrew words that can have more than one translation and tells the reader the possible meanings of the translations. However, Dr. Scofield does not restrict his commentary to semantics. He also explains difficult passages and gives details about customs and life in Biblical times. Other Study Bibles do this also but Dr. Scofield's approach is far more "down to earth" and in clear language.
C] The center column cross-references are exceptional. The first to last listing of a particular word or idea is cross-referenced so the reader can easily go back or forward to see each reference.

"At the Bench: A Laboratory Navigator" by Dr. Barker is a marvelously crafted, enormously useful and entertaining guide for the laboratory neophyte. Dr. Barker has managed to distill the collective wisdom and intuitive flair of experimentalists of the last three decades into a a survival kit no bench worker should be without. While the purpose of the book is to introduce the wonders and terrors of the lab to the uniniatiated the wealth of useful information contained in this volume make it a valuable addition for the more sophisticated bench scientist. I don't know of a single volume which provides everything from buffer recipes to half-lifes of common isotopes, principles of centrifugation to growth media for bacterial strains, to name but a few examples.
The volume follows the new lab worker from his first day on the job through the ins and outs of assimilating into the lab. Tips are provided on who runs the show (the secretary and senior tech) to how to get started (do an experiment the first week). The reader is instructed on how to make friends, when to speak up and when to hold back. While much of this advise is simple common sense, having it made explicit is no doubt reassuring and worthwhile. Dr. Barker makes it clear that the integrity of the data are paramount, as they should be, and this message is explicit. The majority of the volume gets down to the nuts and bolts and getting the experiments done, describing equipment (and providing delightful drawings labelling everything from the shaker to the HPLC), instructing on good technique and providing the kind of useful tables to make sure what needs to get autoclaved does and what doesn't is sterile filtered.
Dr.

One of the world's 50 living autistic savants is the first and only to tell his compelling and inspiring life story and explain how his incredible mind works.

Worldwide, there are fewer than 50 living savants, those autistic individuals who can perform miraculous mental calculations or artistic feats. (Think Dustin Hoffman's character in Rain Man.) Until now, none of them has been able to discuss his or her thought processes, much less write a book. Daniel Tammet is the first.

Tammet's problems were apparent from childhood. He was shunned by his classmates and often resorted to rocking and humming quietly. Yet he could memorize almost anything, and his math and language skills were astonishing. By high school, Daniel was diagnosed as autistic, and he began to discover his own superhuman abilities: calculating huge sums in his head in seconds, learning new languages in one week, and memorizing more than 22,000 digits of pi.

With heart-melting simplicity and astonishing self-awareness, Born on a Blue Day tells Daniel's story: from his childhood frustrations to adult triumphs, while explaining how his mind works. He thinks in pictures. He sees numbers as complex shapes: 37 is lumpy like porridge; 89 reminds him of falling snow. Today, Daniel has emerged as one of the world's most fascinating minds and inspiring stories. His brain has amazed scientists for years, and everyone will be moved by his remarkable life story.

This is an astonishing book, written in first person. It is a memoir of the author's life with the "synaesthesia and savant syndrome", a rare form of Asperger's syndrome.

People with synaethesia see numbers as forms with color and texture, and days as vivid colors, and so Daniel Tammet has the ability to see in his mind numbers and days as colors, each number and day having its own distinct color as an attribute. A day with a color, like a flower with a scent! The blue day of the title of this book refers to Wednesday, which, like the number nine, he sees in his mind as blue. "I know it was a Wednesday," narrates Tammet, "because the date is blue in my mind and Wednesdays are always blue, like the number nine or the sound of loud voices arguing."

Daniel is also a savant, with a remarkable ability to multiply and divide given numbers with astonishing speed. He can recite from memory the number pi, 22 divided by 7, or 3.1428571 to 22,514 decimal places, a feat which will take him a little over five hours! He says numbers are beautiful things, and that pi is as beautiful as Mona Lisa.

Like Christopher John Francis Boone, the fifteen year old hero of Mark Haddon's novel, "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time", Daniel, too, is very fond of prime numbers. "Prime numbers feel smooth, like pebbles," he says. He can recognize every prime number up to 9,973. He can speak in ten languages, including Icelandic, Lithuanian and Welsh, and he has the ability to learn a new language within a few days. He learnt Icelandic, for example, within a week; a most remarkable feat for any human being. He doesn't understand jokes easily, and the expressions on human faces he finds baffling. And like Christopher, he doesn't like to be touched.
If a picture is truly worth a thousand words, then the savant gifts of Daniel Tammet are all the more startling because he has an ability to meld his senses together seamlessly to see things nobody else can. It's an impressive, even daunting prowess that comes at a high price since he has Asperger's syndrome, a neurological disorder that causes him to be limited in his ability to fit in with the larger culture, as well as synaesthesia, a condition where sounds, words or numbers can translate into colors, shapes or textures. In fact, the latter condition is reflected in the book's title as he associates the color blue with Wednesdays. What makes this book so thoroughly unique is that the book is not a treatise of a subject by a medical professional but a memoir by the subject himself.

As such, there are no grand conclusions drawn about either medical condition, or scientific assumptions of how Tammet came to his gifts. What the author does quite plainly is share how he approaches such astonishing feats as reciting pi to over 22,000 decimal points over the course of five hours. We get a palpable sense of how he perceives theorems and automatically develops strategies based on his innate sense with numbers and images. But before you can say Rain Man, you also see a young man who is actually functioning in the world on his own, which illustrates perfectly the spectrum of severity with autism. Tammet's affliction has mild enough for him to be relatively self-sufficient, even though his struggles to gain societal acceptance have been a traumatizing road.

Raised by loving parents, he spent most of his childhood alone and could only relate to fellow outsiders like immigrants and exchange students, people who heightened his facility for foreign languages.

Since the original publication of this seminal work, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) has come into its own as a widely practiced approach to helping people change. This book provides the definitive statement of ACT—from conceptual and empirical foundations to clinical techniques—written by its originators. ACT is based on the idea that psychological rigidity is a root cause of a wide range of clinical problems. The authors describe effective, innovative ways to cultivate psychological flexibility by detecting and targeting six key processes: defusion, acceptance, attention to the present moment, self-awareness, values, and committed action. Sample therapeutic exercises and patient–therapist dialogues are integrated throughout.

New to This Edition
*Reflects tremendous advances in ACT clinical applications, theory building, and research.
*Psychological flexibility is now the central organizing focus.
*Expanded coverage of mindfulness, the therapeutic relationship, relational learning, and case formulation.
*Restructured to be more clinician friendly and accessible; focuses on the moment-by-moment process of therapy.

I thought that this would be a "classic" re-edition: rearranged chapters, updated research data, a new prologue and epilogue, nothing else.
I was wrong.
This is a second edition, but this is not the same book anymore. Is more readable, more polished, in one word, a more 'mature' book.

For instance, the chapter structure is completely different from the first edition; they're addressing brand new topics like the general strategy(research and practice), for the development of a psychology more adequate to the human condition (namely, the CBS strategy). In addition to the new ones, some topics that in the first book were more implicit now are addressed explicitly, like the therapeutic relationship, case conceptualization and the psychological flexibility model.

The first edition didnt include the always helpful hexaflex model, but this one goes through the six processes chapter-per-chapter, with lots of short clinical dialogues and examples, making it more clear and easy to understand for the clinicians.

ACBS has born and grown spectacularly in the last years, and this books reflects and adds support to that.

In sum, if you are giving your first steps in ACT, try this edition. And if you have read the first edition... well, try this edition too, you wont be disappointed.

Found book very thorough and well presented with material that could be integrated into my psychiatry and psychotherapy practice. Covers all aspects of ACT with good examples and well referenced. I've now read it through several times and always find to idea to integrate into my work.

The Handbook of C-Arm Fluoroscopy-Guided Spinal Injections

The Handbook of C-Arm Fluoroscopy-Guided Spinal Injections [Kindle Edition]

The Handbook of C-Arm Fluoroscopy-Guided Spinal Injections
Download electronic versions of selected books The Handbook of C-Arm Fluoroscopy-Guided Spinal Injections [Kindle Edition] for everyone book 4shared, mediafire, hotfile, and mirror link For some time now, C-arm fluoroscopy-guided spinal injections have been performed widely for both the diagnosis and management of spinal and paraspinal pain. Despite this common use, many residents and pain fellows do not receive formal training in the anatomy of the vertebral column as it relates to radiographic imaging, nor do they receive any training in fluoroscopic imaging. While books do exist on the subject, they only show the final needle position for spinal injections, and offer very limited instruction.

The Handbook of C-Arm Fluoroscopy-Guided Spinal Injections provides residents and fellows with a handbook that illustrates spinal injections in a step-by step fashion, while also describing fluoroscopic imaging and spinal anatomy as they relate to spinal injections, including the manipulation of the C-arm fluoroscope that is required in order to obtain ideal images for the performance of injections.

Based on a lengthy study of the relationships between skeletal models, the matching fluoroscopic image, and the desired needle placement in the cervical, lumbar, and sacral spinal regions, the text recreates those images that effectively demonstrate the relationships between the angle of the x-ray beam and the spinal column. Those chapters describing the fluoroscopic imaging of the cervical, lumbar, and sacral spine, provide details on how the trainee would go about obtaining the views needed to approach the spine in a safe and effective manor at each level.

The book also provides comprehensive information on performing stellate and lumbar sympathetic injections using fluoroscopy, taking readers through step-by-step approaches to each of the sympathetic blocks, while offering insights into how to ascertain the correct needle position at each level.

Simply and succinctly written, The Handbook of C-Arm Fluoroscopy-Guided Spinal Injections provides the field of pain management with a useful teaching aide for residents and fellows striving to improve their skills in the performance of spinal injections.

While pictures and text are generally good, coverage of anatomic variations, new imaging technique and advanced practice techniques is limited. This book, while useful as background for the novice, remains inadequate as a primary guide for the inexperienced physician. Experienced physicians may find its scope and depth insufficient for their purposes. Reading the book does not substitute for the performance of such procedures on cadavers or patients under the guidance of an experienced physician such as would be acquired in formal residency or fellowship training or in approved CME courses.
By Jeffrey D. Petersohn
I bought the book as a review of pain procedures, patient positioning, and c-arm positioning prior to covering a shift at a pain clinic. I work as a rad tech and did not have much experience working in a pain clinic. This book was an excellent resource.

Let us not go over the old ground, let us rather prepare for what is to come. —Marcus Tullius Cicero Improvements in the health status of communities depend on effective public health and healthcare infrastructures. These infrastructures are increasingly electronic and tied to the Internet. Incorporating emerging technologies into the service of the community has become a required task for every public health leader. The revolution in information technology challenges every sector of the health enterprise. Individuals, care providers, and public health agencies can all benefit as we reshape public health through the adoption of new infor- tion systems, use of electronic methods for disease surveillance, and refor- tion of outmoded processes. However, realizing the benefits will be neither easy nor inexpensive. Technological innovation brings the promise of new ways of improving health. Individuals have become more involved in knowing about, and managing and improving, their own health through Internet access. Similarly, healthcare p- viders are transforming the ways in which they assess, treat, and document - tient care through their use of new technologies. For example, point-of-care and palm-type devices will soon be capable of uniquely identifying patients, s- porting patient care, and documenting treatment simply and efficiently.

The publication of this book has been highly anticipated by many in the emerging field of public health informatics and it does not disappoint. Although seemingly targeted at those new or recently introduced to the discipline, or those "crossing over" from other areas within the broader informatics arena, content is very well-suited for all comers, with sufficient detail to satisfy even those familiar with the many issues detailed in the richly detailed case example chapters.
The breadth of material covered is excellent, making it especially appropriate as an introductory or intermediate text. Of particular interest will be the section of the book on "The Science of Public Health Informatics" which includes particularly fine chapters on information architecture, value assessment, management of personnel and projects, and organizational change. Bill Yasnoff does a particularly good job adding clarity to a muddled domain in a chapter on privacy, confidentiality, and security of Public Health Information. Those readers generally interested in PHI education, or with specific interest in developing training programs for PHI programs or for public health agency personnel would find great value in Janise Richard's chapter on core competencies.
The writing style is generally clear and illustrative, albeit not terribly concise. We have adopted this book as the core text for our graduate-level introductory course in PHI.
By Paul Fu Jr.
Very in depth coverage of PHIs. The book is a little short on algorithms and comprehensive coverage of databases. This book has a place in every Public Health Library and will be definitive for years to come. The second edition should be released in a couple of years.

Bestselling author Daniel Tammet (Thinking in Numbers) is virtually unique among people who have severe autistic disorders in that he is capable of living a fully independent life and able to explain what is happening inside his head.

He sees numbers as shapes, colors, and textures, and he can perform extraordinary calculations in his head. He can learn to speak new languages fluently, from scratch, in a week. In 2004, he memorized and recited more than 22,000 digits of pi, setting a record. He has savant syndrome, an extremely rare condition that gives him the most unimaginable mental powers, much like those portrayed by Dustin Hoffman in the film Rain Man.

Fascinating and inspiring, Born on a Blue Day explores what it’s like to be special and gives us an insight into what makes us all human—our minds. Direct download links available for Born On A Blue Day: Inside the Extraordinary Mind of an Autistic Savant
