Review

"Richard Krueger and Mary Anne Casey have prepared a detailed, step-by-step roadmap of how to design, prepare for, implement, analyze, and report on focus groups. They give detailed discussions of issues to consider, tips, and warnings to help prepare for the expected and unexpected. The book informs the novice focus group user and provides insight for the seasoned focus group practitioner."

(Judith Berkowitz)

"This book is packed with sound advice and detailed approaches, making this method a success. . . If you are even thinking about doing any kind of group interview, this is the place to start."

(Nursing Times)

"We want people to listen to us. . . . Focus group interviewing is about listening. It is about paying attention. . . . being nonjudgmental. . . . When used appropriately, the process improves listening and the results can be used to benefit people who shared the information. And people go away feeling good about having been heard."

(Richard A. Krueger & Mary Anne Casey From Preface)

Every graduate student, postdoc and scientist knows that images and illustrations can make or break their lecture, poster presentation, and journal or book article. Graphics software and laser printers have placed professional-quality graphics within the reach of everyone. But in the end, whether your audience sees clear, understandable images or not depends on whether you followed the principles presented here. Learn the strengths and weaknesses of different forms of visual presentations. Understand when to use a figure, and how much information can be represented in one. See examples of bad, good, and better graphs and tables. The author also presents information on presenting DNA sequences, protein structures, and other molecular graphics. '

If you are looking for something to show you flashy posters, do a Google imgage search on scientific posters. If you are looking at ways to display your data or to organize a poster, than this is a book for you. I am a professor and I have a student who just doesn't have an eye for organizing things so that they can be understood easily. This book helps with that.
By K. Ainslie
This is a very helpful book. I learned a lot about how to prepare figures and I use it as a reference almost all the time. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because it is a little bit dated (written in the 1990's), and I think installations have evolved a bit.

This is a very good reference book for laboratory animal facility managers. There is an excellent section on determining per diem rates, which is every facility manager's nightmare. My only comment would be that it could use some updating with the addition of info on disaster planning for animal facilities.

Otherwise, the book has good information and is very useful.

One of the most popular introductory texts in its field, Statistics for Technology: A Course in Applied Studies presents the range of statistical methods commonly used in science, social science, and engineering.
The mathematics are simple and straightforward; statistical concepts are explained carefully; and real-life (rather than contrived) examples are used throughout the chapters.
Divided into three parts, the Introduction describes some simple methods of summarizing data. Theory examines the basic concepts and theory of statistics. Applications covers the planning and procedures of experiments, quality control, and life testing.
Revised throughout, this Third Edition places a higher priority on the role of computers in analysis, and many new references have been incorporated. A new appendix describes general methods of tackling statistical problems, including guidance on literature searching and report writing.

I must have 50 books on statistics in my collection at all levels and this book is one of the best.
If you have some background in calculus and want a concise and well-written introduction to applied
statistics this is a must have book. After reading this book, you will begin to doubt the standard textbook
paradigm of 1000 page glossy stats books containing one million problems along with cd rom and associated
website.
By tech book guy
I'm not a mathematician or statistician - just a lowly engineer - but I've compiled quite a library of math and stats book over the years and for my money I haven't seen a basic statistics book that even comes close to this classic from 1983. Chatfield not only knows his subject but knows how to present the concepts clearly and demonstrate their application with interesting and relevant examples. And he writes amazingly well - so well that it may actually startle you if, like me, you've spent many painful hours stumbling through the prose wasteland of most math/stats books. Too bad those expert in the language of mathematics so often exhibit English language skills somewhere between "abysmal" and "pathetic" - fortunately Chatfield's book is a shining counterexample.

This book is a self-contained introduction to Statistics, presented in the context of clinical trials and pharmaceutical drug development. It focuses on the statistical analyses most commonly used in drug development and is therefore an ideal introduction to pharmaceutical statistics. Instead of introducing a series of statistical techniques, the book's organizational structure follows the order in which numerical information and statistical analyses are used in trials and new drug development. All students taking classes in pharmaceutical sciences and clinical research need a solid knowledge and understanding of the nature, methods, application and importance of Statistics. They need to understand:why, and how data are collected in clinical trials; how these data are summarized and analyzed; what the results mean in the context of the clinical research question; and, how the results are communicated to regulatory agencies and to scientific and medical communities. This title therefore adopts a unique approach and concept in organization of the content. It begins with an introduction to statistical theory, analysis and interpretation. This is followed by a discussion of t-tests and confidence intervals. Readers are then taken through the whole process of new drug development (using one specific example throughout) that is meaningful in the context of their broader studies. Throughout this process, statistical techniques and analyses are introduced in the order in which they are employed during the process. The book's realistic scientific and progressive organization from pre-clinical trials to clinical pharmacology through clinical trials is novel, meaningful and educationally powerful. The book emphasises the importance of descriptive statistics as well as inferential statistics, something that is rarely done.Supplementary material is included for this text on the PharmPress website in the form of PowerPoint lecture notes on Statistics (based on content of this book) that can be downloaded by lecturers.

Family-based studies, including intergenerational, sibling, and twin studies, are increasingly being used to explore life course epidemiology. However, there are issues relating to study design and the statistical analysis of family-based studies that are still not well understood, and comprehending the underlying assumptions of these studies and drawing the inferences from them can be complex. This book provides the knowledge and skills required to design, analyse, and correctly interpret family-based studies. It explains what these studies can tell us about life course epidemiology; provides practical guidance on how to set-up and maintain birth cohorts for completing family-based studies in life course epidemiology; describes how to undertake appropriate statistical analyses of family-based studies and correctly interpret results from these analyses; and provides examples that illustrate the ways in which family-based studies can enhance our understanding of life course epidemiology. In addition, there is discussion of difficulties specific to setting up such studies in low- and middle-income countries, and issues relating to proxy informants, where parents provide information on children and vice versa, or siblings provide information about each other. Examples of how family-based studies have been used in understanding the life course epidemiology of cardiovascular disease, mental health, and reproductive health illustrate the applicability of the research to these areas, but also more generally to the wider field of life course epidemiology.

The book goes over all the basic information about lab mice. Most sections contain enough information to use this as a handbook for caring for mice. Other sections point to resources that can give protocols for one or several techniques.

The Laboratory Mouse

The Laboratory Mouse (Laboratory Animal Pocket Reference) [Kindle Edition]

Author: Mark A. Suckow | Language: English | ISBN: B00144GGZO | Format: PDF, EPUB

The Laboratory Mouse
Download The Laboratory Mouse from with Mediafire Link Download Link Mice have been domesticated by humans for centuries, even millennia, and have been used in research since the 1600's. However, development of the laboratory mouse as a research model accelerated with genetic experiments in the early 1900's. Today, the laboratory mouse is recognized as the pre-eminent model for modern genetic research. In fact, over the last decade or so, most biomedical research facilities have experienced increases of up to three hundred percent in their mouse populations. Numerous other disciplines, including immunology, cancer biology, toxicology, developmental biology, aging research, and cardiovascular biology have recognized the mouse as a valuable research model.

The Laboratory Mouse provides a single source reference for investigators, technicians, and animal caretakers charged with the care and/or use of mice in biomedical research. The book is particularly valuable to researchers at small institutions and to those who work at facilities that lack large, well-organized animal resource units. Mice have long been recognized as a valuable tool for investigating the genetic and physiological bases of human diseases such as diabetes, infectious disease, cancer, heart disease, and a wide array of neurological disorders. With the advent of transgenic and other genetic engineering technologies, the versatility and usefulness of the mouse as a model in biomedical research has soared. As a result, mouse colonies everywhere are expanding, and scientists who previously focused on other models are turning their attention to the mouse.

Revised to reflect advances since the first edition, The Laboratory Mouse, Second Edition continues to be the most accessible reference on the biology and care of the laboratory mouse. This guide presents basic information and common procedures in detail to provide a quick reference source for investigators, technicians, and caretakers in the humane care and use of the mouse in the laboratory setting. Expanded, updated, and now in color, this new edition includes coverage of the biological features, husbandry, management, veterinary care, experimental methodology, and resources applying specifically to the mouse.

I've had good interviews before, but since it's 4 years since I did my last job search, I decided to get some good insight on the subject.

There were other books that I read trying to find a vision to help me overcome unexpected difficulties during an interview, but this one I bought just to get some quick answers into my head.

It turned out to be more than that. The author is not giving you answers to memorize. Instead, he explains why it is that the interviewer is asking you this particular question, an what he/she is looking for to be in the answer. The book opens up a new dimention before you for what initially seemed to be a simple (or stupid, or irrelevant) question.

The book also explains what parts the interview consists of, and what the purpose of each part is. For example, for the small talk part of it (which I realy hate and consider useless), he explains why it exists, what the goals are for the both parties, how to decipher the interviewer's behavior, and what topics to keep.

Examples for different industries are really helpful. The author is not teaching you cheap tricks. Instead, he makes yourself a very prepared interviewee, ready for the most prepared interviewer (and for the most unprepared, too). Different kinds of interviewers are also discussed.

For most of the subjects discussed in the book, some initial guidance is given of what exactly certain things discovered during the interview may mean. That gets you to a good starting point. We all know that your particular case is unique. And that is fine - it is easy enough to pick up from the point where the author left off.

I am half way through the book, and I found that I am reading slower over the last 10 to 15 pages.
