In The Gifts of Imperfection, Brené Brown, a leading expert on shame, authenticity, and belonging, shares 10 guideposts on the power of Wholehearted Living - a way of engaging with the world from a place of worthiness. Each day we face a barrage of images and messages from society and the media telling us who, what, and how we should be. We are led to believe that if we could only look perfect and lead perfect lives, we'd no longer feel inadequate. So most of us perform, please, and perfect, all the while thinking, "What if I can't keep all of these balls in the air? Why isn't everyone else working harder and living up to my expectations? What will people think if I fail or give up? When can I stop proving myself?"

In The Gifts of Imperfection, Brené Brown, Ph.D., a leading expert on shame, authenticity and belonging, shares what she's learned from a decade of research on the power of Wholehearted Living - a way of engaging with the world from a place of worthiness.

In her 10 guideposts, Brown engages our minds, hearts, and spirits as she explores how we can cultivate the courage, compassion, and connection to wake up in the morning and think, "No matter what gets done and how much is left undone, I am enough," and to go to bed at night thinking, "Yes, I am sometimes afraid, but I am also brave. And, yes, I am imperfect and vulnerable, but that doesn't change the truth that I am worthy of love and belonging."

-I originally bought this book in May of 2011. I can't remember exactly why it spoke to me, but I know I was looking for self esteem boosting books. I think maybe the title resonated because I realized I was having some trouble with perfectionism. Accepting mistakes, compassion for myself, forgiving myself, but also pushing forward to being a better person, a better worker, friend, girlfriend, etc. It resonates today because I see how much of a perfectionist I can be, and how much trouble I am having forgiving myself for past mistakes, and trying not to label myself because of them. I am having trouble sufficiently feeling the guilt enough to change, letting that feeling in, but then forgiving myself, and not letting those behaviors define who I am as a person.
How did the book address this?

-I think these quotes from the book really get to the heart of the message: "Perfectionism is, at its core, about trying to earn approval and acceptance.... Healthy striving is self-focused--How can I improve? Perfectionism is other-focused--What will they think?... Perfectionism is addictive because when we invariably do experience shame, judgment, and blame, we often believe it's because we weren't perfect enough. So rather than questioning the faulty logic of perfectionism, we become even more entrenched in our quest to live, look, and do everything just right." Brown, Brene (2010-09-20). The Gifts of Imperfection (p. 56-57). Hazelden. Kindle Edition.
-What I got from this is that perfectionism tricks us into thinking we have it all: we can feel connected and invulnerable and in control. BUT, it is ultimately unsatisfying because it #1) it is a lie. We aren't in control or invulnerable, or perfect.

Quick and easy read especially since it has key points and summaries after the sections. It is more interesting that Clinical Neurology text and a better buy. Only downside is that the questions in blueprints are not as good as those in pretest.

Of course it's a great text...I've had many past editions of this behemoth. How great it would be to have every word, diagram and table on a several ounce Kindle Fire! I thought probably that all of the features included in the online version, including hyperlinks to the videos would all be conveniently included. Wrong...I found many of the charts and tables difficult to read. I found the search mechanism to be slow. I found no hyperlinks to immediately bring up any online videos or additional information. It's certainly convenient, just not up to what I think it could be.

This is the first edition of a Cecils Internal Medicine Text on a Kindle. Still a lot
of pages, but the weight is gone. I have it with me on my Galaxy tablet at work everyday.
I have used it several times a week in the short time I have had it. It is as good as the
22 or so editions that went before it. Of course I have only been able to use 5 or 6 of the editions
in my 30 years of Family Practice. It is already helping me with my maintenance of certification.
I highly recommend the Kindle version. The price was very good compared to the printed 2 volume set.
Amazon had a very good price on the Kindle version.

A practical, engaging, case-based approach to learning the diagnostic process in internal medicine

Symptom to Diagnosis teaches you an evidence-based, step-by-step process for evaluating, diagnosing, and treating patients based on their clinical complaints. By applying this process, you will be able to recognize specific diseases and prescribe the most effective therapy. Using the framework and terminology presented in Chapter 1, each chapter addresses one common complaint (such as chest pain, diabetes, back pain, etc.). Chapters begin with a case and guidance on how to organize the differential diagnosis. As the case progresses, clinical reasoning is explained in detail. The differential diagnosis for that particular case is summarized in tables that highlight the clinical clues and important tests for the leading diagnostic hypothesis and alternative diagnostic hypotheses. the chapter progresses, the pertinent diseases are reviewed. Just as in real life, the case unfolds in a stepwise fashion as tests are performed and diagnoses are confirmed or refuted. You will be continually engaged by a series of questions that direct the evaluation. Each chapter contains several cases and concludes with a diagnostic algorithm.

The third edition is enhanced by the addition of five new chapters---Bleeding Disorders, Dysuria, Hematuria, Hypotension, and Sore Throat---as well as a greater emphasis on how to master the process of working from patient level data (signs, symptoms, and laboratory tests). All chapters have been revised to incorporate new research, which results in new and refined approaches to common symptoms encountered in clinical medicine.

An engaging case-based approach to learning the diagnostic process in internal medicine

"All clinicians caring for patients, from medical students to residents and attending physicians, are the intended audience. The book is well written for all levels, and the authors are well-respected educators and experts in the field. 3 Stars."--Doody's Review Service

Symptom to Diagnosis teaches you an evidence-based, step-by-step process for evaluating, diagnosing, and treating patients based on their clinical complaints. By applying this process you will be able to recognize specific diseases and prescribe the most effective therapy.

Each chapter is built around a common patient complaint that illustrates essential concepts and provides insight into the process by which the differential diagnosis is identified.

Coverage for each disease includes:

  • Textbook Presentation: offers a concise statement of the common or classic presentation of the particular disease
  • Disease Highlights: covers the most pertinent epidemiologic and pathophysiologic information for the disease
  • Evidence-Based Diagnosis: reviews the accuracy of the history, physical exam, laboratory and radiologic tests for the disease. In this unique section, the author points out the findings that help you “rule in” or “rule out” the various diseases.
  • Treatment: details the basics of therapy for the disease discussed

Filled with algorithms, summary tables, and questions that direct evaluation, Symptom to Diagnosis is a true must read before your first clinical encounter.

The unhappy reviewers of this wonderful book tend to complain about omitted differentials. If you are looking for a quick reference, look elsewhere! { For example, Differential Diagnosis Pocket: Clinical Reference Guide (Pocket (Borm Bruckmeier Publishing)) comprehensively lists differentials and fits in a lab-coat. Advanced Health Assessment & Clinical Diagnosis in Primary Care is my favorite in-depth but still light weight-- though not lab-coat sized-- common diagnosis book.}

Personally, I like case study approaches, like this one, where a patient with S&S is presented, and then the approach to diagnosis and treatment is discussed. This book uses prose "Mr J's severe crampy abdominal pain suggests..." ; outlines "Etiology and related prevalence is as follows: 1. Cancer, 53%, 2. Sigmoid or ..."; and flagged information "Marked leukocytosis, left shift or ... is a *late* finding and suggests..." to deliver information. It also includes tables, figures, and B & W pictures. The case study is updated as more information is presented. For instance, after discussing the labs and imaging a provider might order, the case is resumed with the given results, and more information is presented as the story continues.

These type of presentations help the information come alive for me, and help me remember it.

Another reviewer mentioned that some common S&S or labs are omitted.
I liked this book very much & I gave it 5 stars. While I am not a student of medicine (I am a civil engineer by profession) I got interested in biology and medicine books as I tried to coach my daugher to become a physican while she was in high school. Well she went to college and majoring in Japanese Studies and Piano!! So much so for a dad's effort to guide his daughter to a high paying profession! However, in this process I got interested in how to diagnose diseases. Because of my this desire, I started looking for books which could explain the art and science of diagnoses and do not rely much upon experience which I could not have as I am not a medical student and do not see patients supervised by a medical professor. So I read many books but something was missing. Then I stumbled upon the book - Symptom to Diagnosis- and guess what it does the trick! I am not saying that reading this books makes me a physician or equivalent to a medical student level smart but one thing is clear that after going through this book I do understand the process for symptom to diagnosis. Basically (as I understand)the Symptom to Diagnosis is a Process of Elimination which gives preference to the simple diagnosis [explanation of symptoms] but simultaneouly keeps an eye on more sinister diagnosis of symptoms. One thing that authors did not emphasize is when to give more weight to sinister diagnosis. For example: if we have a 55 year old man with chest pain who has high cholestrol and have GERD should be quickly considered for the more siniter explanation of Heart Attack rather than GERD reflex!! Otherwise, the authors have done such a good job making the book so damn easy to understand that they have done a dis-service to medical profession!!

Is an imposter robbing you of God's love?

Many Christians have bought into the lie that we are worthy of God's love only when our lives are going well. If our families are happy or our jobs are meaningful, life is a success. But when life begins to fall through the cracks and embarrassing sins threaten to reveal our less-than-perfect identity, we scramble to keep up a good front to present to the world - and God. We cower and hide until we can rearrange the mask of perfection and look good again.

Sadly, it is then that we wonder why we lack intimate relationships and a passionate faith. Yes all this time God is calling us to take the mask off and come openly to Him. God longs for us to know in the depth of our being that He loves us and accepts us as we are. When we are true selves, we can finally claim our identity as God's child - Abba's child - and experience His pleasure in who we are.

Brennan Manning encourages readers to let go of the imposter lifestyle and freely accept our belovedness as a child of the heavenly Father. In Him there is life, our passion is rekindled, and our union with Him is His greatest pleasure.

After years of having evangelical education crammed into my head, Abba's Child is a book which challenges what I say I know and believe. Manning's honesty about the terrible sin problem all born-again sinners are acquainted with rings true to the Apostle Paul's lament "the things I wish to do, I do not (and vice versa)". But, instead of talking us out of our bad feelings about our condition, Manning challenges us to begin the journey of intimacy with the God Paul also teaches us is named Abba. Far from the typical modern Christian books which skim the surface of the human experience, Abba's Child is a primer for those who quietly realize that the Christian faith is much more than a call to a system of belief of Absolute Truths-----and that it is a call to the most important Relationship of our lives, that with our utterly "Other" God. Evangelical friends who presently are teaching, studying and ministering at Yale and Cambridge (UK) have thanked me over and over for giving them this book, both saying they must read it over and over----a life changing book! If you are squeamish in thinking God the Father's name is "Daddy", and that he longs for you to address and know him as such, this book probably will make you uncomfortable. If you have arrived at the exhaustion of modernity in the American evangelical experience, this book will remind you that the Gospel is a relationship, not a "plan of salvation" to know, memorize and regurgitate. Great reading for worn-out evangelicals!

Once again Brennan Manning has hit the nail on the head and pierced my heart. For monthes I did my best to read this book but could not. Every word hit me to the core and made me think. Manning has the ability to speak to your heart and make it past all of our defences, opening us up to God's amazing love for us, as broken as we are. In this book he looks at the imposter that we place over our real self to hide from all of the pain and sadness in our lives. Manning reminds us that we were all created special by God and that His love is more than we need. Manning calls for us to understand the imposter and to accept it as part of us, a part that Jesus loves unconditionally and desires for it to accept His love and forgiveness. Manning is wonderful at getting the reader to understand God's love and leads you to God's feet where you can't help but surrender and love Him. Anyone struggling with who they are and realize that teh imposter is alive and well in their lives needs to read this book.

From the Back Cover

Is an impostor robbing you of God's love? Many Christians have bought into the lie that we are worthy of God's love only when our lives are going well. If our families are happy or our jobs are meaningful, life is a success. But when life begins to fall through the cracks and embarrassing sins threaten to reveal our less-than-perfect identity, we scramble to keep up a good front to present to the world––and God. We cower and hide until we can rearrange the mask of perfection and look good again. Sadly, it is then that we wonder why we lack intimate relationships and a passionate faith. Yet all this time God is calling us to take the mask off and come openly to Him. God longs for us to know in the depth of our being that He loves us and accepts us as we are. When we are our true selves, we can finally claim our identity as God's child-Abba's child-and experience His pure pleasure in who we are. Brennan Manning encourages readers to let go of the impostor lifestyle and freely accept our belovedness as a child of the heavenly Father. In Him there is life, our passion is rekindled, and our union with Him is His greatest pleasure.
