Review

"In the midst of what clearly is a crisis state in psychotherapy as a profession, Eric Caplan offers us a historical account of its beginnings... A well-researched history, grounded in American culture and science. It fills a significant void in the histories of psychiatry and psychology that to date have focused too exclusively on psychoanalysis and mental asylums." - American Scientist "This well-researched and skillfully written work shatters the falsehood that the founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud, played the pivotal role in the origin of American psychotherapy." - Choice "Historians have long understood that 'mind cure' was the seedbed of therapeutic culture. Caplan's innovation lies in showing how psychiatrists (including psychoanalysts) co-opted mind cure rather than opposing it... [An] important and original work." - Eli Zaretsky, Journal of American History"

This looks to be a fantastic text, however it does NOT come with an access code for Wiley Plus access code. That will run you another 95 dollars. I was expecting it to come with access to the online component.
By Amazon Customer since 1996
This book "looks" nice but it's actually fairly hard to follow. The homework problems don't help with understanding. They don't follow logically from the chapter text.
In fact, I'm not sure why my professor requires the newest version. We pay an exorbitant amount of money for the newest version, which requires the prof to waste time assigning new problems and the student to...get the same benefit they'd have had with the 3rd edition.
No Wiley code. So, if you buy the book and the code, you're looking at around $275.
...RIDICUlOUS.
Did biochemistry change that much in a few years?
Doubtful.

Posts about Download The Book Run, Don't Walk: The Curious and Chaotic Life of a Physical Therapist InsideWalter Reed Army Medical Center [Kindle Edition] for everyone book with Mediafire Link Download Link M*A*S*H meets Scrubs in a sharply observant, darkly funny, and totally unique debut memoir from physical therapist Adele Levine.

In her six years at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Adele Levine rehabilitated soldiers admitted in worse and worse shape. As body armor and advanced trauma care helped save the lives—if not the limbs—of American soldiers fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq, Walter Reed quickly became the world leader in amputee rehabilitation. But no matter the injury, physical therapy began the moment the soldiers emerged from surgery.

Days at Walter Reed were intense, chaotic, consuming, and heartbreaking, but they were also filled with camaraderie and humor. Working in a glassed-in fishbowl gymnasium, Levine, her colleagues, and their combat-injured patients were on display at every moment to tour groups, politicians, and celebrities. Some would shudder openly at the sight—but inside the glass and out of earshot, the PTs and the patients cracked jokes, played pranks, and compared stumps.

With dazzling storytelling, Run, Don’t Walk introduces a motley array of oddball characters including: Jim, a retired lieutenant-colonel who stays up late at night baking cake after cake, and the militant dietitian who is always after him; a surgeon who only speaks in farm analogies; a therapy dog gone rogue; —and Levine’s toughest patient, the wild, defiant Cosmo, who comes in with one leg amputated and his other leg shattered.

Entertaining, engrossing, and ultimately inspiring, Run, Don’t Walk is a fascinating look into a hidden world.

Exceptionally gifted storyteller author/physical therapist Adele Levine, though seldom asked about her job, presents this colorful outstanding book: "Walk Don't Run", recalling her work rehabilitating poly-traumatic combat amputees. These young, (mostly enlisted) Army soldiers and Marines arrived at Walter Reed Army Medical Center within 72 hours of severe traumatic combat injury from the war in Iraq or Afghanistan. Highly skilled trained medics/surgeons were recognized for saving lives which in the past would have been lost.

The top floor of the Military Advanced Training Center (MATC), with the glass observatory walls, (to accommodate tour groups) was open for physical therapy from 0700-1600 hours daily, and began immediately. Military and civilian staff worked as a cordinated MATC team to deal with the large influx of patients walking around on stiff metal legs or pushing wheelchairs with stumps. Walter the therapy service dog, (with his proper service vest) was often called to nuzzle or lay his head on comforting an injured vet. On occasion, he would sneak past the Colonel, leaving his physical therapy duty station, to dine in the nearest cafeteria garbage can. There were also social workers, chaplains, Red Cross and other volunteers, who donated their time and energy to assist.

Especially with the challenging patients as double amputee Cosmo, who typically expressed himself with expletive F***, with an attitude to match; Levine used her unique gifts of humor, cheer, and positivity where in the MATC "everything was celebrated", to aid in patient recovery. Levine holds a doctorate degree in Physical Therapy graduating from the University of Maryland in 2005.
Wow! I've been trying to write this review for a couple of days now, but I am having a hard time articulating how much I love it and I so badly want to do it the justice it deserves...so I'll just try now! I have known and worked with Adele for the better part of a decade. She is an absolutely inspirational and insightful person in the way she can find humor during the most difficult and awkward times. That is a real gift - she makes people laugh in the face of tragedy and that laughter is what gives people a more optimistic perspective and motivation to move forward - whether they are staff members, patients, or sick family members.

I laughed and cried throughout this book. All of the stories are true, and it gives people outside of Walter Reed a really accurate glimpse into a world that nobody else has captured in this way. Most importantly to me, it gives the people who worked at "the old Walter Reed" a memoir of our own - stories that I'm sure would otherwise be long forgotten. The staff would often gather in the back of the clinic during times like the clown visits and just say "You can't make this sort of thing up - I hope somebody is writing this down!"...such surreal moments! Her book also captures some heartbreaking stories and sheds light on what so many of these brave men and women have gone through and continue to go through today. It was a different time, and so uniquely special and life changing to all of us there. It was truly the end of an era when we closed those doors. Adele's writing captures it all perfectly, but she maintains a sensitivity that is vital in a story like this. People would do well to read this book, as we really don't read or hear about these stories anymore in the news.

Civetta is a great comprehensive textbook for critical care. I am a 4th year surgery resident and the addition of the new surgical chapters is wonderful. The online full text is great too. Not a beginner critical care textbook but if you are looking for something advanced for management of critical care patients this is definitely the book. This is THE textbook for real critical care!!

I dont right many reviews, but I really enjoy reading from this textbook. I feel like I learn something new everytime, even if I've read certain topics before. Also, the information is very up to date, with some references from just a few years ago. I have not used the online text version, but am sure will start soon. I like the intro's with historical backgrounds on certain topics also.

An invaluable resource for conducting successful solution-focused therapy.

Drawing on nearly 30 years of clinical practice, Bannink compiles solution-focused questions and protocols that are formulated to elicit the client’s expertise on the issue(s) that brought him or her to therapy. Categorized for general use and for use with specific types of clients—such as children, couples, and families, and those who have suffered trauma or who might benefit from medication—the questions demonstrate how the precise use of language is an important tool in solution-focused interviewing. Exercises and homework suggestions invite self-reflection and experimentation with the solution-focused model, while case studies illustrate the model’s effectiveness with a wide variety of clients. 1001 Solution-Focused Questions equips clinicians with a toolbox full of ready-to-use approaches, so they’re prepared to provide support as clients find their own way to a better future.

NOTE: I received a free review copy of this book from Metapsychology Online Reviews; a more detailed version of my review appears on that site.

In this book, author and clinical psychologist Fredrike Bannink literally does provide 1,001 solution-focused questions; these can be found in Chapter 10. However, Bannink delves much deeper than this simple list, offering the reader a brief history of solution-focused work, a guide to identifying the various types of client motivation, and specific information on how to use solution-focused interviewing in therapy sessions. Furthermore, Bannink includes a total of twenty-four exercises throughout the book. These are designed both as occasions for self-reflection and as opportunities to practice solution-focused methods.

As noted, Bannink begins with an overview of solution-focused interviewing. She goes on to address the issue of motivation in solution-focus treatment, describing the differences between customers, complainants, and visitors and discussing the solution-focused questions appropriate to each type of client. (Note that the solution-focused questions are actually listed throughout the book in addition to the complete list of 1,001 questions provided in Chapter 10.)

Bannink then leads the reader through the entire solution-focused treatment process, breaking down the model session by session. She starts with the first session, offering detailed information on everything from how long this session should last to which solution-focused questions should be used to how to conclude the session. Bannink's guidelines are specific: in addition to a myriad of sample questions, she also provides case examples.

But give me a process and I've learned it immediately! Definitely recommend this item, because if you're going into nursing or another health care field this is something we need to know!!

Drug class was confusing enough. Not enough time to really learn the drugs so the book helped explain key concepts and the practice questions were helpful because they focus on the important things to remember about specific drugs.

A fascinating work of detective history, The Black Death traces the causes and far-reaching consequences of this infamous outbreak of plague that spread across the continent of Europe from 1347 to 1351. Drawing on sources as diverse as monastic manuscripts and dendrochronological studies (which measure growth rings in trees), historian Robert S. Gottfried demonstrates how a bacillus transmitted by rat fleas brought on an ecological reign of terror -- killing one European in three, wiping out entire villages and towns, and rocking the foundation of medieval society and civilization.

In 1347, the boat drifted into Messina Harbor in Sicily with all hands aboard, dead. The ship was taken as a prize, brought to harbor, and the rats jumped ship. So starts the narrative of the greatest pestilence in history.

Gottfried writes in the style of a docudrama that adds to the dread of what you know will occur. Three forms of plague destroyed between one third to two fifths of the world's population. The first was the bubonic strain, the second was pneumonic, and the third was septacemic plague. The second was more virulent than the first, and the third was the deadliest of all, killing its host within 24 hours. Such a quick demise however, also meant it was the least likely to spread and ravage a larger population.

The author tells us of communities that rose to the occasion by quaranteening themselves, those who thought the disease was caused by the position of the stars, or the wrath of God bringing judgment day. Many reacted dysfunctionally by penitent, self-flagellation making germ contamination faster, and reaching a larger population as they moved from town to town. Delirious people did the St. Vitus dance to exhaustion. Other towns used perfume and sanitation to combat the evil.

This plague resurfaced every twenty-five years or so thereafter, bringing lasting changes. Whole families and estates had been wiped out or abandoned. Universities sprung up to better understand the nature of disease, and some municipalities introduced sanitation measures on a regular basis. Ships placed discs around their lines to prevent the arrival or departure of ship rats.

The plague is no longer the danger it once was thanks to antibiotics, but its effects linger in the familiar kindergarten song that kids still sing: "Ring around the rosey, pocket full of posey. Ashes, ashes, all fall down."

This may be one of the best books about the black death you will ever read.
By Edwin C. Pauzer
VINE VOICE
This is the second book I read about the Black Death of 1347-51. I was equally impressed with the way Gottfried presented his materials. The author also examines several other diseases that were common in those days, and takes a scientific look at the bacillus that infected fleas and, eventually, the rodents that spread the epidemic. Thoroughly researched (look at his bibliography), this is a terrific book for anyone wanting to know not only about the Black Death but also about its aftermath in Europe (it shaped and changed the future of Europe). I would rank this book with Philip Ziegler's classic "The Black Death."

My 19 year old struggles with social anxiety. She read your book cover to cover in one sitting, and said she wished she'd had it in high school! The illustrations are spot on, I love the way they integrate with the text & give the reader visual cues on how to externalize anxious thoughts & behaviors. We're ordering more copies to share.

Drug class was confusing enough. Not enough time to really learn the drugs so the book helped explain key concepts and the practice questions were helpful because they focus on the important things to remember about specific drugs.

Black Death
You can download Black Death [Kindle Edition] for everyone book 4shared, mediafire, hotfile, and mirror link A fascinating work of detective history, The Black Death traces the causes and far-reaching consequences of this infamous outbreak of plague that spread across the continent of Europe from 1347 to 1351. Drawing on sources as diverse as monastic manuscripts and dendrochronological studies (which measure growth rings in trees), historian Robert S.
