Review
"In the midst of what clearly is a crisis state in psychotherapy as a profession, Eric Caplan offers us a historical account of its beginnings... A well-researched history, grounded in American culture and science. It fills a significant void in the histories of psychiatry and psychology that to date have focused too exclusively on psychoanalysis and mental asylums." - American Scientist "This well-researched and skillfully written work shatters the falsehood that the founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud, played the pivotal role in the origin of American psychotherapy." - Choice "Historians have long understood that 'mind cure' was the seedbed of therapeutic culture. Caplan's innovation lies in showing how psychiatrists (including psychoanalysts) co-opted mind cure rather than opposing it... [An] important and original work." - Eli Zaretsky, Journal of American History"
