Herophilus, a contemporary of Euclid, practiced medicine in Alexandria in the third century B.C., and seems to have been the first Western scientist to dissect the human body. He made especially impressive contributions to many branches of anatomy and also developed influential views on many other aspects of medicine. Von Staden assembles the fragmentary evidence concerning one of the more important scientists of ancient Greece. Part 1 of the book presents the Greek and Latin texts accompanied by English translation and interpretative commentary. Significant background information is given in the introductory essay preceding each chapter. Part 2 briefly sketches the major developments within the Herophilean school after Herophilus, and discusses the individual members within it. Anyone interested in the history of science, the history of medicine, or intellectual history will find this book a rich source of information about an unusual and important aspect of Greek culture.

In the history of medicine, popularity is mainly focused on the famous scientists such as Hipoccrates and Galen. However on the basis of positive science, maybe the most important scientist is Herophilus. The knowledge on Herophilus is rare and scattered in different testimonies and writings of authors such as Galen and Celsus. This valuable work of von Staden collects all these scattered information in one book. I think this book should be the main starting point to study ancient Alexandrian medicine, Herophilus and Herophilians. This book will not only illuminate today's knowledge but will also guide the future knowledge

Review

"David Schuster's Neurasthenic Nation provides a vivid and compelling account of neurasthenia and its place in American medicine and culture."
(Laura Hirshbein author of American Melancholy 2099-01-01)

"[An] excellent study. The book is a worthy addition to the voluminous literature on neurasthenia."
(Journal of American History 2012-09-01)

"David G. Schuster provides a comprehensive examination of the origins and nature of [neurasthenia], but more importantly he captures why it became such an important social, economic, and cultural phenomenon, as well as why, after 1920, it declined so precipitously."
(Historian 2012-12-01)

About the Author

Women’s health advocate and science journalist BARBARA SEAMAN (1935-2008) is best known for her tireless patient advocacy work, which brought about the first warning label on a prescription drug (the birth control pill), and eventually  lead her to co-found the National Woman’s Health Network, which continues to protect women’s rights today. Her first book, The Doctors’ Case Against the Pill (1969), prompted senate hearings, exposed the biases of the medical establishment regarding women’s health issues, and inspired women around the world to take control of their health. Through her many books, countless articles, and how she personally encouraged so many writers, publishers, and activists of all ages, Seaman devoted her life to advocating for women’s rights regarding their health.

Co-editor LAURA ELDRIDGE is a women’s health writer and activist. She is the author of In Our Control: The Complete Guide to Contraceptive Choices for Women and the co-author of The No-Nonsense Guide to Menopause.

America's Care of the Mentally Ill: A Photographic History tells the story of our nation's care of the mentally ill, starting from the 18th century, through the birth of the American Psychiatric Association and hospital-based care in 1844, up to the present. This engrossing book is the first ever photographic volume depicting the history of the care of the mentally ill in the United States and the development of state mental hospitals. Assembled by William E. Baxter, M.A., M.S., Director of the APA Library and Archives, and David W. Hathcox III, M.A., a freelance photographer, this extensive volume is culled from a variety of sources, including the APA's collection of rare photographs. America's Care of the Mentally Ill: A Photographic History begins with the plight of the mentally ill in the 18th century. It continues through the many reform movements of the 19th century and the evolution of the state mental hospital system. The book ends with a description of the 20th century's rapid advances in treatments, and the demise of the state mental hospital.

Miss the second mentel Hospital USA SPring Grove STate Hospital,in general fair and accepted There is better information at APA about mentel Hospitas USA...
By Fernando J.Cabrera
I bought this as a gift for myself, as I work at a historic state facility and have a great interest in the subject. Seeing as this was a more scholarly endevor I was hoping for a better presentation, especially for the $81 price tag. It is depicted as a "first ever photographic volume..." However, it does not live up to it's promotion or it's price tag. Although hardbound and on good quality paper, it hardly depicts a photographic history of the care of the mentally ill in the US, being only 144 pgs, with over 100 years of history and over 100 institutions across the US. One might have a more satisfying experience by ordering books on specific facilities, such as the book on Dixmont and the Eloise, both offered at Amazon. I purchased these book also and found them to be engrossing with wonderful photos of life at these institutions.

I looked up the negative New York Times book review to see what Higbie's problem was. She thinks Hornblum is biased because he supports "prison reform." The book sticks quite close to the issue of medical experiments in prison, which must be at the very least something in prison in need of "reform". Higbie is also offended by the comparison to Nazi medical practices. But that's not exaggeration by Hornblum. As the book relates, the Nazi doctors at Nuremberg successfully avoided the death penalty by arguing that their own pointless torture experiments were similar to that conducted by U.S. doctors in U.S. prisons.
It's an excellent book. The book focuses on the specific prison, but has a lengthy chapter on experiments on prisoners throughout the U.S.
My only real criticism is the optimistic ending of chapter 3 that the FDA banned prisoner experimentation in the 1980s. As far as I can tell, the regulation was suspended at passage and then repealed in 1997. Fifty years after Nuremberg, experiments on prisoners unable to give informed consent continues.

Perpetrator of these atrocities, University of Pennsylvania's "Dr." Albert Kligman, is the second physician in FDA history to be barred from experimenting on human subjects. Both Retin-A and Renova are derivatives of skin hardening chemicals he concocted at Holmesburg Prison. This merciless freak experimented on hospitalized retarded children and helpless elderly patients as well. Never apologized to his tortured victims or their families.
I am permanently boycotting Retin-A, Renova, Johnson & Johnson and Dow Chemical. U. Penn will never get a dime from me either. All of them continue to profit greatly from wanton destruction of human lives.

This history of the African AIDS epidemic is a much-needed, accessibly written historical account of the most serious epidemiological catastrophe of modern times. The African AIDS Epidemic: A History answers President Thabo Mbeki's provocative question as to why Africa has suffered this terrible epidemic. While Mbeki attributed the causes to poverty and exploita-tion, others have looked to distinctive sexual systems practiced in African cultures and communities. John Iliffe stresses historical sequence. He argues that Africa has had the worst epidemic because the disease was established in the general population before anyone knew the disease existed. HIV evolved with extraordinary speed and complexity, and because that evolution took place under the eyes of modern medical research scien-tists, Iliffe has been able to write a history of the virus itself that is probably unique among accounts of human epidemic diseases. In giving the African experience a historical shape, John Iliffe has written one of the most important books of our time. The African experience of AIDS has taught the world much of what it knows about HIV/AIDS, and this fascinating book brings into focus many aspects of the epidemic in the longer context of massive demographic growth, urbanization, and social change in Africa during the latter half of the twentieth century. The African AIDS Epidemic: A History is a brilliant introduction to the many aspects of the epidemic and the distinctive character of the virus.

Really a must read for anyone working in HIV in sub-Saharan Africa or just seeking to understand the history of the epidemic in SSA or anywhere. Very accessible while being filled with information. It does not require a particularly sophisticate amount of knowledge about HIV or SSA, though some basic knowledge would help. It will be required reading in any course I teach on HIV.

Review

It will suffice here to evoke a few glorious names without contemporary equivalents in the West: Jabir ibn Haiyan, al-Kindi, al-Biruni, Ibn Sina. . . . A magnificent array of names which it would not be difficult to extend. If anyone tells you that the Middle Ages were scientifically sterile, just quote these men to him, all of whom flourished within a short period, 750 to 1100 CE. --George Sarton, Introduction to the History of Science. Ibn Sina was particularly noted for his contributions to the fields of medicine . . . . . His two most important works are The Book of Healing and Al Qanun, known as the Canon of Medicine in the West. . . . The [Canon of Medicine or Law of Natural Healing] (circa 1030 A.D.) is the one of the most famous books in the history of medicine. In it [Avicenna] surveyed the entire medical knowledge available from ancient Christian Latin and Muslim sources, and the book is enriched by the author's original contributions. The Canon became the standard of medical science and was on par with works of Hippocrates (460 377 B.C.) and Galen (129 199 A.D.) in all important libraries of European universities. Ibn Sina begins his Canon with the following words: It is my heart s desire, to start off with speaking about the general and common principles of both parts of medicine, i.e., theory and practice. The first translation into Latin was written in the 12th century by Gerhard von Cremona (1135 1187), and the first Hebrew version appeared around 1491. In the Arabic language the Canon of Medicine appeared in 1593 and is thought to be the second book ever printed in Arabic. The Canon gained widespread popularity only after the introduction of typography in the 15th and 16th centuries, but its impact throughout Europe remained steady until the end of the 18th century. . . . --Asita S. Sarrafzadeh, M.D. Ibn Sina.

Abu Ali al-Husayn ibn Abd Allah ibn Sina, known to many by his westernized name, Avicenna, wrote the Canon of Medicine [Law of Natural Healing] around 1000 CE, squarely in what Lyons defines as the Golden Age of Islamic culture, between the 8th and 13th centuries. A comprehensive encyclopedia in five volumes, the Canon is widely regarded as the most important book on medicine ever written. The medical historian, Dr. William Osler, described it as a medical bible for longer than any other work in his Evolution of Modern Medicine. Drawing on the tradition of Muslim universalism, Ibn Sina incorporated sources from Greek, Roman, Arabic, Indian, and Chinese medicine, his work encompassing an almost complete scope of medical knowledge at the time. For this and other reasons, the Canon maintained its importance as an educational manual for an unprecedented period, appearing on medical school course syllabi well into the 17th century. --Ibn Sina s Canon of Medicine, A Medical Bible.

About the Author

Abu 'Ali al-Husayn ibn Sina is better known in Europe by the Latinized name Avicenna. He is probably the most significant philosopher in the Islamic tradition and arguably the most influential philosopher of the pre-modern era. Born in Afshana near Bukhara in Central Asia in about 980, he is best known as a polymath, as a physician whose major work the Canon (al-Qanun fi'l-Tibb) continued to be taught as a medical textbook in Europe and in the Islamic world until the early modern period, and as a philosopher whose major summa the Cure (al-Shifa') had a decisive impact upon European scholasticism and especially upon Thomas Aquinas (d. 1274). Primarily a metaphysical philosopher of being who was concerned with understanding the self s existence in this world in relation to its contingency, Ibn Sina s philosophy is an attempt to construct a coherent and comprehensive system that accords with the religious exigencies of Muslim culture. As such, he may be considered to be the first major Islamic philosopher. The philosophical space that he articulates for God as the Necessary Existence lays the foundation for his theories of the soul, intellect and cosmos. Furthermore, he articulated a development in the philosophical enterprise in classical Islam away from the apologetic concerns for establishing the relationship between religion and philosophy towards an attempt to make philosophical sense of key religious doctrines and even analyse and interpret the Qur an. Recent studies have attempted to locate him within the Aristotelian and Neoplatonic traditions. His relationship with the latter is ambivalent: although accepting some keys aspects such as an emanationist cosmology, he rejected Neoplatonic epistemology and the theory of the pre-existent soul. However, his metaphysics owes much to the Amonnian synthesis of the later commentators on Aristotle and discussions in legal theory and kalam on meaning, signification and being. Apart from philosophy, Avicenna s other contributions lie in the fields of medicine, the natural sciences, musical theory, and mathematics. In the Islamic sciences ('ulum), he wrote a series of short commentaries on selected Qur anic verses and chapters that reveal a trained philosopher s hermeneutical method and attempt to come to terms with revelation. He also wrote some literary allegories about whose philosophical value recent scholarship is vehemently at odds. His influence in medieval Europe spread through the translations of his works first undertaken in Spain. In the Islamic world, his impact was immediate and led to what Michot has called la pandémie avicennienne. When al-Ghazali  led the theological attack upon the heresies of the philosophers, he singled out Avicenna, and a generation later when the Shahrastani gave an account of the doctrines of the philosophers of Islam, he relied upon the work of Avicenna, whose metaphysics he later attempted to refute in his Struggling against the Philosophers (Musari'at al-falasifa). Avicennan metaphysics became the foundation for discussions of Islamic philosophy and philosophical theology. In the early modern period in Iran, his metaphysical positions began to be displayed by a creative modification that they underwent due to the thinkers of the school of Isfahan, in particular Mulla Sadra (d. 1641).

The Devil's Doctors: Japanese Human Experiments on Allied Prisoners of War
Download electronic versions of selected books The Devil's Doctors: Japanese Human Experiments on Allied Prisoners of War from 4shared, mediafire, hotfile, and mirror link The brutal Japanese treatment of Allied POWs in WW2 has been well documented. The experiences of British, Australian and American POWs on the Burma Railway, in the mines of Formosa and in camps across the Far East, were bad enough. But the mistreatment of those used as guinea pigs in medical experiments was in a different league. The author reveals distressing evidence of Unit 731 experiments involving US prisoners and the use of British as control groups in Northern China, Hainau Island, New Guinea and in Japan. These resulted in loss of life and extreme suffering. Perhaps equally shocking is the documentary evidence of British Government use of the results of these experiments at Porton Down in the Cold War era in concert with the US who had captured Unit 731 scientists and protected them from war crime prosecution in return for their cooperation. The author’s in-depth research revealed that, not surprisingly, archives have been ‘combed’ of much incriminating material but enough remains to paint a thoroughly disturbing story. The author has managed to write a book based on an idea that could be summed up on a single page. Unit 731 definitely conducted biological warfare experiments, weapons testing and developments, with a total disregard for human life. Based on testimony from people who served in unit 731, and the facts presented here, there is every likelihood that some of this testing was conducted on America POWs. The US government did go to some extraordinary lengths to acquire the document's, data and personnel from the Japanese biological warfare unit 731. In doing so they labeled everything about unit 731 top secret and it got covered up. No we didn't share this information with our allies. None of the many doctors who were involved in the unit 731 activities ever faced war crime tribunals, except those captured by the Russians. Just as Werner Von Braun never faced a war crime tribunal. In fact, after the war, several of them came over and worked in the US on our biological warfare efforts (which as signatories of the Geneva convention we weren't supposed to be conducting in the first place). A good many other doctors who worked at 731 went on to become notable individuals within Japanese Medical schools and pharmaceutical companies. Even today, 70 years later, a lot of the data on 731 and what is known (by the government) about what testing was done, by who and on whom, remains highly classified information.

John P. McGovern held seventeen professorships, received twenty-nine honorary doctorates, and established the nation’s largest privately owned allergy and immunology clinic. He authored 252 professional publications including twenty-six books in the medical sciences and humanities, and served as president or chief elected officer of fifteen professional societies in medicine. In addition, the McGovern Foundation has given millions of dollars to various local and national health charities, and many Houston landmarks bear the McGovern name, including the McGovern Lake and McGovern Children’s Zoo (at Houston’s Hermann Park), the McGovern Health and Science Museum, and the McGovern Campus of the Texas Medical Center.

Bryant Boutwell, a long-time friend and colleague, has captured the influential life of this visionary Texas physician in John P. McGovern, MD: A Lifetime of Stories. In captivating narrative, interlaced with revealing personal and family stories, Boutwell chronicles McGovern’s holistic approach to medicine, which transcended the traditional boundaries of institutional identities and medical specialties. McGovern worked tirelessly to bring together big institutions, the health professions, bold interdisciplinary ideas, and a team approach to healthcare that, though prescient at the time, is recognized today as imperative. This commitment led to his founding role in the American Osler Society, which promotes humanistic and ethical dimensions of the practice of medicine, and his establishment of humanities programs at the UT Health Science Center at Houston and the UT Medical Branch at Galveston.

This book is by one of the first authors to recognise that communication skills are important in science, and that they are a craft that has rules and principles that any student can learn relatively easily. It deserves to be treated as a classic, and should be compulsory reading for any student of the life sciences.
I can recall reading it with much interest during my PhD in the 1980's, when it was about the only work available in this field, and various biochemical societies in the UK made it available to students. Much of the advice on straightforward communication style is still extremely valid today. In the later 80's and 90's, the field of writing skills took off, and now most University bookshops have several shelves of books on writing skills and how to write a thesis. Booth's book is short, direct, and the advice is very practical. Read it!
