Professionals and students in the field of industrial hygiene need a concise guide that thoroughly covers the practical methods of evaluating health threats in the workplace.

Bisesi and Kohn's Industrial Hygiene Evaluation Methods, Second Edition introduces basic methods for evaluating work and some non-work environments in order to detect and measure physical, chemical and biological agents, as well as hazardous ergonomic factors. The book is divided into relatively short units that provide concise overviews and descriptions of basic concepts. Each unit is followed by practical technical exercises. These exercises foster the understanding of basic industrial hygiene principles and practices for collection, detection, identification, calculation, and interpretation of qualitative and quantitative data. Exercises can be conducted in a setting in which agents and other factors are detectable and measurable. Alternatively, the simulated evaluation exercises that are included can be conducted in a classroom or laboratory.

This book is an introductory reference for environmental and occupational health and safety students and practitioners. It is an indispensable tool that illustrates methods fundamental to industrial hygiene practice, and is just as valuable in the professional's office as it is in the classroom.

I feel like an idiot for titling this review "Great pictures!" (what am I, in second grade?), but the fact is that the detailed, blown-up illustrations in this book make it a lot easier to grasp the minutia of what's going on in the human body, all the way down to a cellular level. I bought it for my anatomy & physiology class and decided to keep it as an additional resource for future A&P classes, of which there will be many.

Challenging class and I would have been a lost puppy if it wasn't for this textbook! I wouldn't have purchased it if it wasn't need and it was a definite MUST.

This is a very simple workbook/textbook for teachers grappling with the new brain-based learning craze that is sweeping the country.

Sousa is definitely not a V.S. Ramachandran, but the book is neatly and carefully laid out to give the beginner a decent overview of the brain's role in the learning process.

The book touches briefly on a number of issues of interest to teachers and parents of young children, including the need for good nutrition, the importance of using both humor and the five senses in the learning process, and an explanation of how short and long-term memory work.

With its large font-size and set of review questions at the end of each chapter, this would be a decent workbook for a week-long teachers' in-service.

Cultures of Plague

Cultures of Plague: Medical thinking at the end of the Renaissance
Download electronic versions of selected books Cultures of Plague: Medical thinking at the end of the Renaissance [Kindle Edition] from with Mediafire Link Download Link Cultures of Plague opens a new chapter in the history of medicine. Neither the plague nor the ideas it stimulated were static, fixed in a timeless Galenic vacuum over five centuries, as historians and scientists commonly assume. As plague evolved in its pathology, modes of transmission, and the social characteristics of its victims, so too did medical thinking about plague develop.

This study of plague imprints from academic medical treatises to plague poetry highlights the most feared and devastating epidemic of the sixteenth-century, one that threatened Italy top to toe from 1575 to 1578 and unleashed an avalanche of plague writing. From erudite definitions, remote causes, cures and recipes, physicians now directed their plague writings to the prince and discovered their most 'valiant remedies' in public health: strict segregation of the healthy and ill, cleaning

streets and latrines, addressing the long-term causes of plague-poverty. Those outside the medical profession joined the chorus.

In the heartland of Counter-Reformation Italy, physicians along with those outside the profession questioned the foundations of Galenic and Renaissance medicine, even the role of God. Assaults on medieval and Renaissance medicine did not need to await the Protestant-Paracelsian alliance of seventeenth-century in northern Europe. Instead, creative forces planted by the pandemic of 1575-8 sowed seeds of doubt and unveiled new concerns and ideas within that supposedly most conservative form of

medical writing, the plague tract.

Relying on health board statistics and dramatized with eyewitness descriptions of bizarre happenings, human misery, and suffering, these writers created the structure for plague classics of the eighteenth century, and by tracking the contagion's complex and crooked paths, they anticipated trends of nineteenth-century epidemiology. The Black Death struck Europe in the fourteenth century, killing hundreds of millions of people. There was little understanding of even the most basic causes and effects that might have been involved in the spread of the disease. It is not true, however, that the scientific insights about disease that were to start in the Enlightenment and continue to our own times represented the first understanding of the plague as something other than a magical curse or a lesson from God. In Italy, the plague recurred in an epidemic from 1575 to 1578, and during this particular outbreak, people began some primitive but essential epidemiology and even societal treatment. This is the surprising lesson of _Cultures of Plague: Medical Thinking at the End of the Renaissance_ (Oxford University Press) by Samuel K. Cohn, Jr., an astonishingly detailed look at the beginnings of an intellectual revolution. The author, a specialist in the Italian Renaissance and in the history of disease, reminds us that there was "no simple binary progression from a supposed premodern to modern medical thought." The doctors, medical workers, and even gatekeepers in the middle of the plague in Milan, Padua, and Venice observed, looked at the illness in new ways, and wrote about what they saw.

The writings are essential to Cohn's study, and represent a basic shift in the way the plague was documented. Barber-surgeons might write about the plague, and drug-sellers, merchants, lawyers, artisans, clerics, and minor officials all got into the act, a printed resource which Cohn has mined as the bibliographical backbone of his book, "a wide spectrum of authors from cardinals to cobblers, in prose and verse." The tracts from this time were not just in academic Latin but in the vernacular.

Evaluation of the occupational environment is a major aspect of occupational health/industrial hygiene practice. Numerous methods are used to evaluate the occupational environment for physical, chemical, and biological agents, and ergonomic factors that pose potential risks to the health of workers. This comprehensive textbook introduces several related basic industrial hygiene methods for evaluating occupational hygiene.
The text is divided into short units that provide a concise overview and summary of basic concepts, followed by a technical exercise. The step-by-step exercises can be conducted in an occupational setting where the applicable agents are detectable and measurable and/or other factors are observable. As an alternative, simulated evaluation exercises can be conducted in the classroom or laboratory. In either case, the student will gain an understanding of the basic concepts for collecting qualitative and quantitative data both directly and indirectly related to industrial hygiene practice.

Review

"This is an excellent book. It will be very useful for practitioners across the grade levels, as well as for teacher educators. It is the clearest and most informative description of how to foster students' executive functioning that I have seen. The quotes, vignettes, and many examples all bring the book to life. I highly recommend it!"--Janette K. Klingner, PhD, School of Education, University of Colorado at Boulder

"This very readable book enables teachers to explicitly teach implicit learning skills. It balances research and practice in reminding educators that students can't master the material they need to know if we don't teach them how to do it. Meltzer shares tested strategies and abundant classroom examples. She provides necessary tools for supporting academic growth in a wide range of students, and for helping students experience the critical truth that informed effort is the key to success. This book really gets the job done!"--Carol Ann Tomlinson, EdD, William Clay Parrish, Jr. Professor and Chair, Department of Educational Leadership, Foundations, and Policy, University of Virginia

"This book succeeds very well in its goal of providing usable information for teachers and other school professionals. The chapters are well written, informative, clear, and practical. The case studies and numerous case examples are excellent. These human touches help to illustrate the many areas of executive functioning that can be supported and enhanced for children with disabilities as well as typically developing children. This book will be an invaluable reference for any school or clinical personnel."--Margaret Semrud-Clikeman, PhD, Departments of Psychology and Psychiatry, Michigan State University

"An excellent, detailed overview of how executive functions can be integrated into classroom instruction for all grade levels. The book is very teacher friendly, including many examples and useable forms and techniques. A major appeal of the book is its focus on creating a classroom culture that fosters executive function for all students, rather than just presenting remediation techniques for those having difficulties. The strategies for screening and ongoing assessment mean that the book can easily be used as part of a schoolwide response-to-intervention or positive behavioral support system. Each chapter follows the same format, explaining first why the area is important, and then how to implement instruction at elementary, middle, and high school levels."--Catherine A. Fiorello, PhD, School Psychology Program, Temple University

"Teachers will find this book enormously useful, easy to understand, and easy to implement. Each chapter includes a remarkable array of rubrics, templates, checklists, and examples. The book looks strategically at the role of executive function (EF) in teaching and learning, showing how EF deficits can be impediments to academic, personal, and social success. By creating a culture of EF, teachers and administrators can support the growth of self-aware, resilient, problem-solving students who are ready to take on the challenges of learning, in school and beyond."--Lou Salza, MEd, Headmaster, Lawrence School, Broadview Heights, Ohio

I have worked in the health promotion and aging field for over 35 years and have seldom seen this much information in one place on any topic. It is well organized, easy to understand, and honest about the realities of the difficulties of aging in our culture. I cannot think of any major question faced by those involved in this part of the life cycle that is not included in the book. The inclusion of many checklists, and other resource lists will simply the process of decision making every step of the way. WONderful account of the development of molecular biology and its extraordinary possibilities...
By Millicent Tomkins
I bought this book because my husband was part of the development of science at UCSF and he was given substantial mention. So I don't know how generalizable my review is. However if you are interested in academic matters and the building of a first class medical institution and recombinant DNA, you will find this readable, well written, and interesting. You don't have to be a scientst to understand the story. (Obviously, Drew Baker is not my real name.)

As the title says, the content is OK. It's not groundbreaking material or anything. It's a standard textbook for a class. The Kindle version however is not good. The text doesn't appear like many other books; instead, it looks as if they've taken each individual page and shrunk it. You can finger swipe (on the iPad anyway) to make it increase or decrease in size, but anyone who has ever read something magnified on a smartphone knows how irritating that can be. Also, the words/terms that are linked to vocabulary terms in the back are not highlighted in a dark color, but a light blue that is hard to see. The kindle version definitely needs improvement.

I had to have this book for my Assessment course for a master's program in Counseling. It is a good book, but at times my classmates and I found it hard to read and repetitive. It's also an expensive book, which is why I rented it from Amazon.

It is the best book on Stability Testing in Pharmaceutical Development I have read so far and, I believe, one of the best existing. Extensive combination of theory, practice, regulations together with description of evaluation methods and best practices make this book very comprehensive to use as a study book as well as a reference book. Extending the topic to adjacent fields of biologics and combination products practically covers almost all aspects of stability considerations in pharmaceutical environment
By Marina Senko
The stability hand book is comprehensive, organized, thorough, and well written. It covers everything you need to know in establishing and maintaining a stability program. Good overview on regulatory requirements, ICH, WHO, climatic zones, methods, data analysis, SOPs, validation, and calibration. I highly recommend it to anyone involved with stability testing and stablity programs.

Review

"[An] excellent study...It will have broad appeal for those interested in the history of plague or responses to epidemic disease, for historians of local government and administration in Italy, and for anyone with an interest in the development of medicine and medical theory." --Sixteenth Century Journal

"Offers a stimulus to more research on the theme of plague, a fascinating topic and already a very lively one among a broad range of historians of medicine, politics, religion, art, and literature." -- Renaissance Quarterly

"[An] important contribution...This book is a model of scholarly endeavor: a significant and stimulating argument is informed by rich and detailed research and conveyed in energetic and engaging writing. An indispensable contribution to the field, it should be read by every scholar interested in early modern disease and health." -- Bulletin of the History of Medicine

I was a CHEM major some 35+ years ago, and Dr. Pauling was sort of an icon among we BioChem wannabes - undoubtedly one of the great biochemists of the 20th century. To me the proof of the pudding is in the eating:

I cannot trace a single male member of my family, back into the early 1800s, who lived to see their 60th BD. My great grandfather died at 54, my grandfather in his early 40s, my father at 59 and my only brother of conjestive heart failure at 54. Are you impressed by now?

God willing, I will see my 70th this fall. People tell me I look like I'm in my late 50s, I haven't had a cold in at least 25 years, I've never really been seriously ill, and I feel good - thank you very much.

I first read Dr. Pauling's stuff on the wonders of Vitamin C (especially taken in conjuncton with Vitamin E) and became a devotee more than 30 years ago, based mainly on his reputation. I've been a Pauling vitamin popper for over 30 years now, although cut back to 10 grams per day, of Vitamin C years ago. I'm not sure my great health is due to the good Doctor's advice, but I'd be willing to bet the farm on it, if there was any way of knowing.

There is a lot of rather boring stuff in the book, like double-blind studies, which I place the nice-to-know category. Dr. Pauling's condensed recommendations for a healthy life, right at the start of the book, is about all you need to know IMHO. Start these straight away and read the rest of the book at your leisure is my reommendation.

Concerning this book, I believe three things:

1. Natural preventive medicine, properly applied, is the secret to a long and fruitful life, at least physically.

2. Dr. Pauling was a practical genius, and he was so far ahead of organized medicine it's amusing.

My Dad always said that when you want to know something, talk to the organ-grinder, not the monkey. With that epithet in mind, may I suggest that you promptly borrow or buy a copy of Linus Pauling's How to Live Longer and Feel Better, recently reissued in an updated 20th anniversary edition. Yes, this is THE Dr. Pauling: the man your chemistry teacher idolized and your family doctor tries hard to ignore. Why? Because Linus Pauling committed the cardinal sin of allopathic medicine: he, a medical outsider, dared to present, directly to the public, his insightful reviews of the scientific literature to demonstrate that high doses of vitamins cure real diseases. What's more, Pauling reassessed many supposedly open-and-thoroughly shut "vitamins-are-useless" studies and explained how the researchers had skirted the fact that their data actually demonstrated that vitamin therapy did indeed have statistical value. Again and again, Pauling criticized study authors who failed to interpret their own work fairly, or even accurately, and had passed off biased opinions as valid conclusions from their work.

When negative studies are revealed to actually be positive, organized medicine has egg on its beard. Hence, it has long been open season on Pauling, arguably the world's most qualified, and certainly the world's best known, critic of our scorbutic (vitamin C deficient) medical system. Pauling's two unshared Nobel prizes (he is the only person in history with that distinction) are no protection from ignorant critics who slam vitamins without reading the research first.

Like me, for example.

From the Author

This is a review of The Complete Eldercare Planner as posted by a reader and family caregiver. I am posting this review in the hopes that people are inspired by his words...
Recently I found myself along with 3 other siblings and spouses thrust into new uncharted waters in a totally new season of our lives. Suddenly and without any training we were and continue to this day having to take care of my aging parents. I for one will freely admit that as a child I was never trained, prepared, nor exceptionally gifted to undertake such a task. It is just not the type of thing that you can ever really get to a line and say ready...set...go...and do it very well. Elderly health care in 2005 does not always afford us the luxury of any long preparation either emotionally or financially.

Suddenly unmercifully and usually without warning you hear over the phone in the midst of a busy American routine those words you dread. It's Cancer, a stroke, or replacement surgery, just minor or major operations which means weeks of homecare and hospitalization's, etc., You are suddenly no longer swinging a few bats warming up in the on deck circle there in safety at a bit of distance. But you find yourself thrust into the batters box. You are no longer the stand by just in case fill in player who dressed for the game just in case you would or might be needed. But suddenly with a phone call, you find yourself thrust without any prior warning into the batters box. You are to take charge with 3 others voices and votes, your parents primary healthcare.

Now, if you call a frantic call for "HELP" in the middle of the night when just the week before things were okay a warning, well then, you're doing better than we were. You find yourself suddenly up at the plate with bases loaded, two outs, bottom of the ninth your teams behind 3 runs. To top it off you're facing a 94mph fastball pitcher who also throws a mean slider called the reality of life. You have never been good at hitting these kinds of pitches. Much less being the homerun hitter the team needs at this moment and are all looking to you now for. Then you hear through your wife there is a book available on just such a thing. It allows you to calmly and logically check out all of your options. It tells you in simple language just how you go about walking through this difficult mine field you've been thrust into without training or any real prior warning. It tells you how to do this without losing your mind, your family unity, and most of all your parents dignity.

I found myself literally reading the pages of Joy's, "Elder Care" wonderful "How TO" book on the plane going headed to Florida. I was then going there for my Dad's 80th B-day party as well as a visit to help out for 10 days at my elderly parents. Little did I know then, that I would see those 10 days turn suddenly into 46 long and hectic days I ended up spending there. Little did I realize as I paged through this how to book on Elderly Care that it would be like a daily Bible to me. I was literally reading a chapter ahead of the events as they unfolded in the next days. It was giving me the answers to question I had not yet asked, but found myself doing so in the next days to follow.

As a former Eagle Scout, USMC SGT., Police Officer, Business owner, 20 years as a Lay Minister and being Happily Married to the same woman for over 26 years now, I'd received lots and lots of great training. Even you will have to admit that this background covers a lot of diversified and really good training. But nothing, absolutely nothing, but my Faith prepared me emotionally, physically, or all of us financially for the events that would suddenly and totally unwelcomed show up in the middle of the night. They just seem to attack you without ceasing on these issues when it's "Your Mom or Dad."

Thank you Joy, for the time it must have taken you and the wealth of information this book contains. I personally know that it was truly a Godsend at a time of crisis in our lives. It still today continues to guide us along these slippery slopes. But because of this well timed work of Mercy and Grace, we have maintained as a family, and continued to allow my parents their Dignity and somewhat their independence. I believe this book will help answer the question of the heart on elderly care and give you practical and timely information to steer you to through the minefields of elderly care life. You should have a copy on the shelf in your own homes and be reading it now, if your parents are near or reaching retirement age.

We waited and it caught us totally by surprise. But it didn't catch Joy by surprise...I personally believe that she was obedient to the Spirit of God to produce this work for a time such as this. Our generation will Thank Her one day I believe for her unselfish actions in writing this Elder Care "How To Bible" for the uniformed. The Word of God says that "...my people perish for a lack of knowledge..." I believe that this book is full of knowledge that will help us all in our moments of crisis and bring life and health to all who read it.

Thanks for listening to my lengthy review and a very special Thanks to You Joy. You just keep on writing Joy and we will keep getting filled with the great knowledge we all need and can practically use for our loved ones. God Bless you and again... Thank you from our families hearts to yours.

God Bless You,

David D. Spaulding

A COMPREHENSIVE AND PRACTICAL GUIDE TO STABILITY TESTING IN PHARMACEUTICAL DEVELOPMENT

Stability testing is required to demonstrate that a pharmaceutical product meets its acceptance criteria throughout its shelf life and to gain regulatory approval for commercialization. Assessing drug product stability and safety can be quite complicated, and stability profile can impact many functional areas, including analytical testing, formulation development, toxicology, quality, and regulatory affairs.

Handbook of Stability Testing in Pharmaceutical Development: Regulations, Methodologies, and Best Practices is the first volume to cover all aspects of stability testing in pharmaceutical development. It presents a scientific understanding of regulations and balances methodologies and best practices. Comprising 17 chapters, it provides a wealth of resources for pharmaceutical companies, educational institutions, and manufacturing laboratories to use as either a supplementary text for stability training courses or as a reference book for pharmaceutical practitioners.

Topics covered include:

  • Latest regulations for stability testing, including cGMP requirements, ICH guidelines, and global guidances from WHO, ASEAN, EMRO, and other regions.
  • Post-approval considerations and regulatory filing strategies to support a global supply chain.
  • Methodologies, including development of a stability-indicating method, method validation, and transfer. This book also discusses physical stability, non-chromatographic methodologies, and spectroscopic applications.
  • Setting specifications, monitoring impurities, and establishing shelf-life of pharmaceutical products.
  • Data management, including stability reports, CMC, and discussion of out-of-specification (OOS) and out-of-trend (OOT).
  • USP-NF testing in support of stability.
  • Current industry best practices on stability operation, validation, and calibration of stability chambers including considerations for photo-stability testing.
  • Discussion of matrixing and bracketing to support reduced stability testing.
  • Overview of stability programs for biologics and drug-in-devices pharmaceutical products.

This collective work was written by a group of prominent international experts, who have been directly responsible for instituting industry best practices and establishing the current stability guidelines.

About the Author

Kim Huynh-Ba is Technical Director of Pharmalytik. She has over 20 years of experiences in various analytical areas of pharmaceutical development, especially in Stability Sciences. She has involved with several projects harmonizing or optimizing analytical best practices in several companies, including those are under Consent Decree. Ms. Huynh-Ba has authored numerous technical publications and book chapters. She is a frequent invited speaker at national and international conferences. She has conducted several training courses on stability compliance and quality issues for American Chemical Society, American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, Pharmaceutical Training Institute, Eastern Analytical Symposium since 2001. She is the founder of AAPS Stability Focus Group and actively involved with Pharmaceutical Stability Discussion Group. She is an active member of ACS, AAPS, PSDG, ASQ, POMA and serves in the Governing Board of Eastern Analytical Symposium (EAS).

In my professional career as a pharmaceutical scientist, I have been involved with several aspects of the drug development process from pre-IND to commercial and, somehow, I usually found myself coming back to a stability related issue. Stability area seems to draw my utmost interest because in my day-to-day work, my opportunities involved more than one product, and none of the issues was the same. Each situation posed challenges that usually required an exercise of judgment, an understanding of regulations, knowledge of science, a grasp of compliance, and an appreciation of common practices.

Since early 2000, I have also been involved with several training opportunities and I struggled to find good, concise, practical resources, one of which I can just hand to a new scientist who wishes to gain more understanding of stability sciences. In addition, I encountered the same questions posted over and over on different stability best practices discussion forums.

As a book lover, I also have a good collection of technical books. Unfortunately, most of the stability related books are outdated. In addition, many of these materials are theoretical and do not contain much practical information. I understand that the pharmaceutical industry during this period is quite volatile, and guidelines are changing rapidly while regulatory agencies are working closely with the pharmaceutical industry to accommodate these changes; however, the fundamental information continues to remain quite the same as current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) continues to be the standard industry practice. Therefore, I hope to assemble a practical handbook to fill this void.
