Doody's 5-STAR Review!

"At the Bench: A Laboratory Navigator" by Dr. Barker is a marvelously crafted, enormously useful and entertaining guide for the laboratory neophyte. Dr. Barker has managed to distill the collective wisdom and intuitive flair of experimentalists of the last three decades into a a survival kit no bench worker should be without. While the purpose of the book is to introduce the wonders and terrors of the lab to the uniniatiated the wealth of useful information contained in this volume make it a valuable addition for the more sophisticated bench scientist. I don't know of a single volume which provides everything from buffer recipes to half-lifes of common isotopes, principles of centrifugation to growth media for bacterial strains, to name but a few examples.
The volume follows the new lab worker from his first day on the job through the ins and outs of assimilating into the lab. Tips are provided on who runs the show (the secretary and senior tech) to how to get started (do an experiment the first week). The reader is instructed on how to make friends, when to speak up and when to hold back. While much of this advise is simple common sense, having it made explicit is no doubt reassuring and worthwhile. Dr. Barker makes it clear that the integrity of the data are paramount, as they should be, and this message is explicit. The majority of the volume gets down to the nuts and bolts and getting the experiments done, describing equipment (and providing delightful drawings labelling everything from the shaker to the HPLC), instructing on good technique and providing the kind of useful tables to make sure what needs to get autoclaved does and what doesn't is sterile filtered.

At the Bench is the unique and hugely successful handbook for living and working in the laboratory, an essential aid to understanding basic lab techniques and how research groups work at a human level. In this newly revised edition, chapters have been rewritten to accommodate the impact of computer technology and the Internet, not only on the acquisition and analysis of data, but also on its organization and presentation. Alternatives to the use of radiation have been expanded, and figures and illustrations have been redrawn to reflect changes in laboratory equipment and procedures.

In this new edition, the readibility has been enhanced with streamlined text, added subheadings, introductions, and conclusions to each chapter. The special needs of the elderly in all health care settings is the unifying element of this book. It emphasizes a balance of theory, clinical application of knowledge, and clinical skills in caring for the older adult population, and focuses on the practical components for their comprehensive rehabilitation. This book addresses and incorporates aspects of prevention, fitness, and wellness into the rehabilitative model of care for elders with and without pathological conditions.

Very, very little actual substance to this book. For example the section on postural changes in the elderly is less than 1/3 of a page long, lists only what they are - not why they occur, and the reference for the list is back to a book that C. Lewis wrote herself. Section on functional assessment of the elderly only has one assessment tool example. While I certainly would not recommend the book for an experienced clinician, I wouldn't even recommend it for a student.

I am a licensed physical therapist going back to tDPT school. This book was required in my course so I bought it, but it turned out to be a very informative book. It contained various evidence regarding geriatrics practice. The only down side, I think, was it is mono-color. Overall, it helped me review the physiological changes of aging and understand the general idea of geriatric rehab.

I purchased this book a few years after I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. (2005) Those first years were of shock and denial. I was hearing so many things from experts that didn't make sense or feel good when I tried to make the changes they suggested. What was soluable fiber and insoluable fiber? Where do I start in taking supplements?...no one ever mentioned those words. When I finally found the book "what to eat with IBD", food and vitamins made more sense in how they relate to IBD. I finally started to understand what our bodies with IBD need in order to thrive. I have found no other book that explains so matter of factly, and that which gives a wonderful guide of FOODS that HEAL and FOODs that HURT. This really should be given out in G.I's offices for when a patient first learns that they have IBD. It is tremendously supportive. There would be a ton less people crying out saying, "what can I eat!" If you know someone who is recently diagnosed with IBD, buy this book for them to start in the right direction as they start to research and ask questions.

The recipes are fantastic, well balanced, and fit for everyone in the family. I've made almost every recipe and have only disliked one or two. You don't have to slave in the kitchen either! If you have wheat issues or don't believe in eating gluten the book will still be helpful, just substitute gluten free products.

I have to add that I did do the scd diet strictly for almost a year. It felt good because of eliminating the sugars, but nutritionally it's not as sound as Tracie Dalessandro's book.

I've had the opportunity to speak with Tracie on the phone. I am just a stranger to her, one of the millions in this world suffering.

Free download Nutrition Counseling and Education Skills for Dietetics Professionals: 6 [Kindle Edition] for everyone book mediafire, rapishare, and mirror link The text covers communications, counseling, interviewing, motivating clients, delivering oral presentations and using media in presentations. Communication is basic to the relationship that the Registered Dietitian (RD) professional has with their clients. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recognizes the importance of communication skills for practitioners to promote health, disease prevention and treatment. Providing people with information on what to eat is not enough, the RD must also promote and facilitate behavior changes to more healthful food choices.

The text incorporates the Nutrition Care Process (NCP) and model, including four steps of nutrition assessment, nutrition diagnosis using PES statement (Problem, Etiology and Signs/Symptoms), nutrition intervention, and nutrition monitoring and evaluation. The PES statements are the most critical in that the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has been stressing this as an essential component of their standards and requirements.

The text uses activities, case studies, self assessment questions, web references and graphics to engage the student and drive the content home. Direct download links available for Nutrition Counseling and Education Skills for Dietetics Professionals: 6

I used this book for a nutrition counseling course. It has a good amount of explanation and examples but it's a bit boring to read. I did refer back to it several times but I expected a bit more out of the book in terms of content. It would be nice to have answers to the end-of-chapter questions and case studies.

Needed it for class and gets the job done. It definitely has some useful information that I'll always be able to refer back to.

This has been an excellent programed text that I have used in my courses for the last two decades. It has enough facts, concepts and images to prepare for the American Society of Clinical Pathologists exam.

This book was well organized. The charts were helpful. Content was clear and useful. Diagrams were a bit tricky at points, but overall a good choice.
