Biological Psychology, Seventh Edition is a comprehensive survey of the biological bases of behaviour designed for undergraduates enrolled in biological psychology, physiological psychology, or behavioural neuroscience courses. It offers a broad perspective, encompassing lucid descriptions of behaviour, evolutionary history, development, proximate mechanisms, and applications. What's New in This Edition: * A special feature called 'The Cutting Edge' highlights important discoveries, relating the latest findings while illustrating the logic and methodology of experimentation and hypothesis testing. * Each chapter now ends with a newly created 'Visual Summary,' a poster-like layout that organizes the material graphically and directs students to the figures that reinforce each point. * As always, the book has an outstanding full-colour art program, including hundreds of original illustrations that make it easy to understand structures, mechanisms, and processes in the brain. For the Seventh Edition, all of the figures have been revised to achieve a contemporary graphic look. * Over 400 new citations keep the text current and an excellent resource. Thorough and reader-friendly, Biological Psychology, Seventh Edition reveals the fascinating interactions of brain and behaviour. The book is supplemented by two online study resources: The continuously updated Biological Psychology NewsLink site (biopsychology.com/news) provides links to thousands of news stories in the field, while the Companion Website (biopsychology.com) offers a wide range of study and review resources to help students master the material presented in the textbook, as well as coverage of additional topics. The material is presented in an easy to read format, supplemental illustrations are in color and are excellent. My professor decided not to use the book in favor of the PowerPoint slides in conjunction with lecture. I read the book anyway for details not in the lecutres. I'm using the loose leaf version of text, and prefer that format.

Review

"A terrific introduction to the emerging science of behavioral finance." -- Money magazine

"Great stuff. Fresh and helpful." -- BusinessWeek

"This very helpful book is aimed at the novice and the expert, and you come away from it somewhat chastened by your own financial mistakes, but hopeful that you might learn a thing or two about holding onto your hard-earned cash. The authors don't offer simplistic solutions, but hard facts and sound advice."

All of us in biomedicine understand the urgency of getting experimental results into print as quickly as possible. Yet this critical step in the cascade from research conception to publication receives almost no attention in our formal training. It is as if we have been put to sea without a compass. Our collective failure to achieve widespread literacy in our own language – Biomedical Language – seriously impedes the important process of d- seminating new biomedical knowledge and thereby improving the human condition. It is also a significant personal concern for researchers and clinicians in the highly competitive, publish-or-perish environment of c- temporary academia. Of course, if we are clever or lucky enough to come up with that Nobel Prize-winning discovery, great science will carry the day and we are likely to get published even if our writing is fairly horrid. But most of us who publish are “bread-and-butter” scientists. We compete for space in journals which may only accept 10% or 20% of the submissions that they receive each year. For us, convincing, engaging writing will make the difference between being published or rejected, or at least it will make the difference between being published on ? rst submission or having to go through a number of revisions (or journals). None of this is to propose that good writing can make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. Scienti? c content is the sine qua non of biomedical writing.

Some of the questions in this book were almost identical to the questions on my OB exams in nursing school. It was very helpful to practice the questions in this book the night before exams to make sure I knew the material. I have found all of the "Success" books helpful so far in nursing school.

The Biology and Identification of the Coccidia (Apicomplexa) of Rabbits of the World is a taxonomic summation of a damaging intestinal parasite found in rabbits and transmissible to other species, including humans. This book conceptually and historically summarizes the world's literature on the parasite and also provides a quick guide to isolation procedures, identification, strategies for management, and available chemotherapy. It is a vital source of knowledge about coccidia’s real and potential transmission to humans, which can lead to dangerous health problems, like severe dehydration, vomiting, lethargy and even death.

Coccidiosis is an intestinal disease that affects several different animal species, including canines and humans, and is one of the most prevalent protozoal infections in North America. The causative agent is a protozoan that has the ability to multiply rapidly and cause major damage in the intestinal wall, rupturing the cells of the intestinal lining. The final stage, the oocyst, is extremely resistant to environmental stress and is difficult to completely remove from the environment. Oocysts are frequent contaminants of feed and water and when the sporulated oocysts are ingested by other animals, they start the life cycle over in the new host. With the demand for rabbits in scientific research and for rabbit meat for human consumption increasingly globally each year, rabbits are of epidemiologic significance for laboratory workers, university researchers, veterinarians, pet owners, and breeders.

  • Evaluates the scientific and scholarly merit of each of the publications written about coccidian from every rabbit species, providing a complete historical rendition
  • A treatise for the identification of coccidia and their treatment as needed
  • Written in a style that can be understood by most educated lay persons and laboratory workers
  • Written by the first ranked author team among the world-class parasitologists who study coccidia
  • Combined in one single source, this book follows the gold standards in coccidian biology and identification
  • Brings all that information together in one volume and solves the problems faced by researchers, veterinarians, students and others in trying to find and navigate through this scattered literature

I would assume that the majority of people who would buy this book are taking a class in pharmacology. I have had alot of recommended text books that were not worth even taking out of the wrapper, but this book is not one of them. The author's actually spent the time to organize and gather relatively current information and then put a hard cover on it. It's getting harder and harder to get that combination. I gave this a 5 star rating because it really will be a book you will keep and reference after the class is over.
By Timothy M. Schultz
This is an easy-to-read, very concise and to the point text book. Ciccone does a great job of summarizing each disease process, listing the drugs used in their management, and including excellent case studies as they pertain to rehabilitation. Of particular help were the boxes at the end of each chapter which detailed any rehabilitation concerns that should be addressed in treating patients using particular pharmacological intervention. I actually read this book from start to finish and can claim to have read an entire textbook, a first for me.

This introductory text describes the principles of invariant measurement, how invariant measurement can be achieved with Rasch models, and how to use invariant measurement to solve measurement problems in the social, behavioral, and health sciences. Rasch models are used throughout but a comparison of Rasch models to other item response theory (IRT) models is also provided.

Written with students in mind, the manuscript was class tested to help maximize accessibility.Chapters open with an introduction and close with a summary and discussion. Numerous examples and exercises demonstrate the main issues addressed in each chapter. Key terms are defined when first introduced and in an end-of-text glossary. All of the book’s analyses were conducted with the Facets program. The data sets used in the book, sample syntax files for running the Facets program, Excel files for creating item and person response functions, links to related websites, and other material are available at www.GeorgeEngelhard.com.

Highlights include:

A strong philosophical and methodological approach to measurement in the human sciences

Demonstrations of how measurement problems can be addressed using invariant measurement

Practical illustrations of how to create and evaluate scales using invariant measurement

A history of measurement based on test-score and scaling traditions

Previously unpublished work in analyzing rating data, the detection and measurement of rater errors, and the evaluation of rater accuracy

A review of estimation methods, model-data fit, indices used to evaluate the quality of rater-mediated assessments, rater error and bias, and rater accuracy.

Intended as a supplementary text for graduate or advanced undergraduate courses on measurement or test theory, item response theory, scaling theory, psychometrics, advanced measurement techniques, research methods, or evaluation research taught in education, psychology, and the social and health sciences, the book also appeals to practitioners and researchers in these fields who develop or use scales and instruments. Only a basic mathematical level is required including a basic course in statistic.

Invariant Measurement, by Englehard, is a very good presentation of all of the elements of the use of mathematical models to reduce information contained in measurements made in the social, behavioral and health sciences into consistent quantitative measures which are in turn amenable to more classic statistical analysis.

I have utilized some of these methods in examining data taken from Health Care questions and specifically for Patient Reported Outcomes, PROs. The specific application of the Rasch method is exceptionally well presented by Englehard; in fact it is one of the best I have seen in the literature of this type.

To paraphrase Rasch, one may look at responses from an individual to say some academic question and one would like to take into account two factors. The level of proficiency of the individual and the complexity of the question asked. This was one of the constructs used by Rasch and it provides a reasonable basis upon which to examine the theory. The goal of taking these measurements and converting them into quantitatively used and repeatable data is to transform the measurements by means of certain metrics into results which can provide consistent and repeatable statistical inferences. Englehard does an exceptionally good job in presenting an overview of how this is accomplished.

Chapter 1 is a general introduction. I found this a bit complex and not as clear as the remainder of the text. The author tries to motivate the remainder of what he develops yet the result is a mass of information which may be a bit more overwhelming than helpful. If one is new to the topic this can be difficult, if one is quite familiar it is redundant.

Chapter 2 is a development of the models with a specific development of the Rasch model.

I think in order to learn nursing, I have to start with the basic. This book is teaching basic nursing. There is no information that gives you in-depth information on much of anything, but that is exactly the reason why I love this book. So, if you are looking for information that is in-depth of anything, look for another book for advance student.
By vania haischer
This book is the foundation of my LPN course, the only issue I have with it is that it contradicts itself on numerous occasions! sometimes in the very next paragraph. It is very confusing when trying to learn and get a grasp on nursing basics, disease process, interventions etc, not to mention when test time comes around. Hopefully next time the editors will catch the MANY mistakes

The only chapters indexed for kindle are sections 1, 2, 3. None of the numerous drugs or antidotes can be found in the table of contents making the manual impossible to use efficiently. A complete waste of money. If you buy the book, spring for the paper version. I cannot even comment on the content because it is so impossible to use that I have barely accessed it at all.

I have taken a class with Dr. Amiji and his book is just like his class, extremly well done. This book is very helpful for pharmacy majors, it gives thorough explanations and practice sets with all of the answers (not just the odd #'s). I would definately recomend to anyone who is taking his class as well. I have bought many textbooks that were a waste, but this is one that I will keep. It breaks down the equations into simple steps and makes daunting problems seem approachable. The theory is taught in a language that is understandable.

From the Inside Flap

In Ways of Knowing, John V. Pickstone provides a new and accessible framework for understanding science, technology, and medicine (STM) in the West from the Renaissance to the present. Pickstone's approach has four key features. First, he synthesizes the long-term histories and philosophies of disciplines that are normally studied separately. Second, he dissects STM into specific ways of knowing—natural history, analysis, and experimentalism—with separate but interlinked elements. Third, he explores these ways of knowing as forms of work related to our various technologies for making, mending, and destroying. And finally, he relates scientific and technical knowledges to popular understandings and to politics.

Covering an incredibly wide range of subjects, from minerals and machines to patients and pharmaceuticals, and from experimental physics to genetic engineering, Pickstone's Ways of Knowing challenges the reader to reexamine traditional conceptualizations of the history, philosophy, and social studies of science, technology, and medicine.

About the Author

John V. Pickstone is director of the Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine and the Wellcome Unit for the History of Medicine at the University of Manchester. He has edited or coedited a number of books, most recently Medicine in the Twentieth Century (with Roger Cooter), and has written widely on the history of biomedical sciences, medicine, and science in Britain, and on medical innovations and policy.

This "What to Do" series was very useful to me as a parent. It explains complex psychological ideas at a child's level without condescending to them and then attempts to help them learn how deal with those strong emotions.

I purchased this book and What to Do When You Worry Too Much: A Kid's Guide to Overcoming Anxiety (What to Do Guides for Kids) after my 5-year old was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. It has helped her and her then 8-year old brother work through the many adjustments in our family after the diagnosis. We went through the book together and then talked about the activities that might help them deal with how they felt. The simple, clear explanations were a great starting point for discussion. Not everything "worked" nor did we focus on "solving" these emotions--rather we used the books to help the kids see that they are not alone and that there are things they can do when they feel trapped by strong emotions.

My daughter is now almost 7 and still takes the Grumbling book out to read it over. She knows she does have things to complain about in her life, but also that she doesn't want them to take over her life. I have also just purchased What to Do When Your Temper Flares: A Kid's Guide to Overcoming Problems With Anger (What to Do Guides for Kids)which she is anxious to read! How many books on these tough topics can you say THAT about?

This tenth edition of a classic textbook, updated in November 2013 with a free, downloadable chapter on the Affordable Care Act (ACA), presents the critical issues and core challenges surrounding our health care system. Designed for graduate and advanced undergraduate students, it includes the contributions of leading thinkers, educators, and practitioners who provide an in-depth and objective appraisal of why and how we organize health care the way we do; the enormous impact of health-related behaviors on the structure, function, and cost of the health care delivery system; and other emerging and recurrent issues in health policy, health care management, and public health. To update this book with the rapid changes that have occurred in health care through November 2013, a separate chapter, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Supplement, is available to students and instructors as a downloadable PDF.

This text is divided into five sections, in order to provide some coherence to this broad terrain. Part I, The Current U.S. Health Care System, addresses major characteristics and issues, including reform, financing, and comparative health care systems. This section now includes multiple new charts and tables providing concrete health care data. Part II, Population Health, focuses on health behavior, including health care models, public health policy and practice, risk factors, facilitating healthy lifestyle practices, and access to care. Part III, Medical Care Delivery, addresses integrated health models, delivering high-quality health care, health care costs and value, and comparative effectiveness. Part IV, Support for Medical Care Delivery, concerns governance and management issues, including accountability, the health workforce, and information technology. Part V, The Future of Health Care Delivery in the United States, includes a new 5-year trend forecast.

Key Features:

  • Includes major provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act of 2010
  • Each chapter includes these special features: key concepts; extensive mapping resources; key words; learning objectives; discussion questions; and case studies
  • Covers the newest models of care, such as Accountable Care Organizations and Integrated Delivery Systems
  • Examines new ways of conceptualizing and assessing health care, including comparative effectiveness research
  • Features contributions by leading scholars and key figures within the U.S. health care system, including John Billings, JD; Carolyn M. Clancy, MD; C. Tracy Orleans, PhD; and Michael S. Sparer, PhD, JD

I am relieved anytime I find a textbook that is actually enjoyable to read. This is one of those books. The material is inherently dense, but the authors have composed it in a way that does not leave me trying to pull my hair out. Thus far, my only criticism is that certain parts of the book are already starting to appear outdated as a result of the rapidly changing issues associated with the ACA. This is obviously no fault of the authors, but a companion website with updated information would be a great idea.
By Elijah
This book is a well edited, palatable treatment of a very complex topic. I was not looking forward to slogging through this material, but have to admit that Jones and Kovener have made it much less difficult than I had anticipated. I am thrilled that Amazon had this title in paper back at the time I was looking for it and as usual, I paid a great price with very, very fast delivery.

I purchased this book with the MySeachLab access card package. Amazon lists this package as the "paperback" version, but it is actually just the hardcover version but with the added access card to view the online features. It was only $8 more and I feel that it was worth the extra cost. The online website allows you to view the entire book online, view videos and additional readings, print out flashcards, and have access to additional tests. A great resource for the serious student.
I was a bit surprised at how small the book was when it arrived, though. It is shorter and thinner than a typical textbook. I am pleased with my purchase overall.
By Ryzomel
Myself and all my classmates found this text book to be incredibly frustrating. There is no organization within how the book presents each of the systems theories. This made it hard for us to compare and contrasts differences and similarities between the theories.

"In some ways disease does not exist until we have agreed that it does, by perceiving, naming, and responding to it, " writes Charles E. Rosenberg in his introduction to this stimulating set of essays. Disease is both a biological event and a social phenomenon. Patient, doctor, family, and social institutions—including employers, government, and insurance companies—all find ways to frame the biological event in terms that make sense to them and serve their own ends.

Many diseases discussed here—endstage renal disease, rheumatic fever, parasitic infectious diseases, coronary thrombosis—came to be defined, redefined, and renamed over the course of several centuries. As these essays show, the concept of disease has also been used to frame culturally resonant behaviors: suicide, homosexuality, anorexia nervosa, chronic fatigue syndrome. Disease is also framed by public policy, as the cases of industrial disability and of forensic psychiatry demonstrate. Medical institutions, as managers of people with disease, come to have vested interests in diagnoses, as the histories of facilities to treat tuberculosis or epilepsy reveal. Ultimately, the existence and conquest of disease serves to frame a society's sense of its own "healthiness" and to give direction to social reforms.

The contributors include Steven J. Peitzman, Peter C. English, John Farley, Christopher Lawrence, Michael MacDonald, Bert Hansen, Joan Jacobs Brumberg, Robert A. Aronowitz, Gerald Markowitz, David Rosner, Janet A. Tighe, Barbara Bates, Ellen Dwyer, John M. Eyler, and Elizabeth Fee. For any student of disease and society, this book is essential, compelling reading.

Charles Rosenberg states in his introduction to this collection of essays "In some ways disease does not exist until we have agreed that it does, by perceiving, naming, and responding to it." What follows are 14 separate accounts of this process of negotiation in naming and responding to disease and the ever-shifting boundaries of the notion of disease.
This book should be required reading for anyone involved in the healing arts be they physicians, nurse, medical social worker, shaman or lay healer. It should also be read by anyone who has to deal with these people on a regular basis.
Reading these essays makes it very clear that there is not Grand Narrative of dieseas, no solid ground of meaning. Physicians and other healers often act as the Keepers of Meaning in naming our conditions and interpreting it for us. But there are many forces at work involving such things as ecomnomics, social role, public policy, entitlement. I am reminded of a recent new story where parents in posh neighborhoods now go shopping for "diseases" for their children so they can be entitled to advantages on the SAT and therefore have even more ready access to the better colleges. Here the physician enters into collusion with the affluent patient to use "disease" as a means to shore up and assure social status.
Framing Disease though presents more earnest and honest efforts to catalogue our experience of illness.

I had expected this book to go beyond science ways of knowing. The conventional use of "Ways of Knowing" goes far beyond science, whereas book is much more limited; the book should have had a different name. In what it does cover, it is fine.
