I'm currently an MPH student concentrating in infectious disease epidemiology. This book was required for my first infectious disease epidemiology course, and it quickly became a favorite that I will cherish forever. The text is exceedingly detailed, with excellent and thorough descriptions, useful graphics, and chapters written by leading experts in the field. How many textbooks can you honestly say you'd enjoy curling up with and reading for pleasure? Most are dry and sleep-inducing, while Dr. Nelson's text is as engaging as it is informative. The scope is broad and deep.

If you buy only one book on infectious disease epidemiology, make it this one.
(But really, do yourself a favor and also buy Giesecke's Modern Infectious Disease Epidemiology and the APHA's Control of Communicable Diseases Manual; these three books were made for each other.)
By Justin Price
All you need to know about infectious diseases epidemiology. Clearly written and very up to date, comprehensive yet easy to read.

it is quite a resource for referencing, though big but elegantly bonded for durability, its weight not withstanding. Already recommended to colleagues.
By Rotimi
This volume is the best reference book for prescriptions drugs and is far superior to the PDR. I highly recommend it. I do not know why it has to be so expensive as I expect it is produced in large quantities, despite the ongoing research that it requires yearly. It seems more expensive than other annual reference books that I would think have lower numbers sold and require a similar amount of research. Except for the price, it is five stars; I am knocking off one star because of the high price.

Traditionally, the history of the birth control movement has been told through the accounts of the leaders, organizations, and legislation that shaped the campaign. Recently, historians have begun examining the cultural work of printed media, including newspapers, magazines, and even novels in fostering support for the cause. Broadcasting Birth Control builds on this new scholarship to explore the films and radio and television broadcasts developed by twentieth-century birth control advocates to promote family planning at home in the United States, and in the expanding international arena of population control.

Mass media, Manon Parry contends, was critical to the birth control movement’s attempts to build support and later to publicize the idea of fertility control and the availability of contraceptive services in the United States and around the world. Though these public efforts in advertising and education were undertaken initially by leading advocates, including Margaret Sanger, increasingly a growing class of public communications experts took on the role, mimicking the efforts of commercial advertisers to promote health and contraception in short plays, cartoons, films, and soap operas. In this way, they made a private subject—fertility control—appropriate for public discussion.

Parry examines these trends to shed light on the contested nature of the motivations of birth control advocates. Acknowledging that supporters of contraception were not always motivated by the best interests of individual women, Parry concludes that family planning advocates were nonetheless convinced of women’s desire for contraception and highly aware of the ethical issues involved in the use of the media to inform and persuade.

Hadzic's Peripheral Nerve Blocks and Anatomy for USGRA offers up to date information for beginners or novice in the field of Regional Anesthesia. Having just purchased the book, i am impressed at what this book has to offer. This is an impressive textbook written by worlds expert in the field. It offers fundamental knowledge on performance of nerve blocks with nerve stimulation as well as ultrasound guidance. What is unique about this textbook is the display of gross anatomical dissections along with ultrasound imaging. This is something that i have never seen in other textbooks. Furthermore, most chapters offer flowcharts that help to summarize important facts and details. This book is a must buy for residents in training and anesthesiologists in practice.
By Kgandhi
This is printed on glossy paper throughout with glorious color illustrations. I am a first year Orthopedics and Trauma resident in Japan and I found this extremely helpful and easy to understand. All the recommendations are very practical and based on literature reviews and the ultrasound images are state of the art. The range of techniques described is impressive. All the rarely used and new blocks are here and described in detail so I feel I can start applying them with the book alone even though I don't have anyone to guide me through the procedures here.
On Hokkaido we don't have enough anesthesiologists so when I go to work at a rural hospital next year I would probably have to make extensive use of this manual. Gonna add a review based on clinical experience then.

This is probably one of the better science textbooks that I have had the pleasure of reading. It makes biology very easy to digest, especially for non science-y types like myself. The chapter introductions are interesting, the little “What a Scientist Sees”, sections in each chapter are highly interesting as well. Each chapter contains bright headings, very detailed colorful graphics, and colorful subheadings, allowing you to easily navigate through the various topics. Chapters also contain critical thinking, as well as self test questions at the end of each section, letting you check how much of the information in each chapter that you have absorbed.

The text has a very well done layout, starting off with an intro to the WileyPLUS format and some helpful student studying success strategies before moving into the material itself. The material is organized quite nicely, beginning with an introduction to life itself, before moving on to species and family systems, cellular biology and tissues, and finally a comprehensive look at human biological systems and population growth and changing ecosystems. Rounding out the text is a chapter summary, glossary and index.

With its lush visuals, detailed internal organic overviews, sidebars detailing interesting side material and easy-to-digest concepts wrapped in an effective and user friendly navigation system, Visualizing Human Biology is a worthy read, for newcomers to biology or experienced biologists alike.

I have never rented a book before. I rented it for a really good price for a decent time. The seller was very responsible to notify me when the book was due, or other options to extend the time. Which I didn't need. Super trust worthy.

First off, I fully appreciate that trying to explain/summarize biostatistics and research methods is a difficult job. It's a tough topic to cover, but I give no leniency to this book's inability to accomplish its goals.

The book starts off well enough, explaining the basics involved in translational research and evidence based medical practice. However a few pages in, the book starts oversimplifying concepts, resulting in downstream misunderstanding. A perfect example in this book, is the explanation of p-values. This is a concept that is INTEGRAL to translational research, and the only attention it receives in the book is mere 22 lines of moderate-sized font, that actually explains very little. I'm not looking for definitions, I don't think anyone reading this book is. I can very easily Google/Wiki any of these concepts if I wanted a simple definition. I'm reading this book in search of understanding/explanation. This book gives the "what" but never provides the "why" or "how". Even the "simple examples" the book uses are not explained fully; in a subject where every detail matters, this book sure does leave a lot of the important ones out. Again, this is probably done with the intention of creating a minimalistic guide to the subject; eliminating as many potential pages as possible.

The other big issue with this book is the language. It says on THE COVER, "Basic Tools for Medical Decision Making...". Yet the language of the book is anything but basic. It is unnecessarily complicated; I don't know how else to put this. Reading a sentence takes 2-3 tries, not because I'm stupid (I might be, who knows?), but because halfway through a sentence, you've forgotten the point trying to be made.

This book is great. I like the fact that is already written out in an out line form so when reading it is like I already have a set of notes to follow, though I am still taking notes on it. It's a great resource to have.

The book was helpful for a refresher for experienced Oncology nurses. The information was valuable for recertification. This would not be a good source for new nurses trying to certify. The material is too complex and overwhelming.

Most importantly, the choice of content was nearly perfect... very readable, but not overly wordy... relevant to all readers who want a general overview of human physiology.

The presentation was what motivated the five star rating... The figures were numerous, relevant, informative and intuitive. ... However, there were several innovations in presentation of note. In particular, each chapter had a running series of short clinical correlation boxes, where the relevance of the physiological information was highlighted.... At the end of the chapter there was a concise summary that was easy to read and was competed... The questions at the end were segregated into levels of difficulty and were valuable checks of one's grasp of the material... I can't say enough...

With regard to weaknesses, or more precisely text personality... There was very little emphasis on quantitative aspects of physiology, i.e. equations. Many of the important equations were presented, just not emphasized... this goes counter to my view of physiology as a quantitative science.... rather than just a study of structure and function... but, perhaps, the quantitative aspects are more appropriate for a more advanced audience.... Also, one had to progress substantially into the text (500 or so pages), before homeostatic mechanisms were discussed (where I believe these mechanisms form the core of the science of physiology)..... And, most of the first third of the book related more to cellular physiology than to system physiology... an important subject that brings everyone up to speed, but which takes substantial time to master and makes it hard to apply this text to a single semester course....

The [test] is abnormal. Why is it abnormal? What does it mean? What should be the next step in the evaluation of my patient? How does this change my treatment plan?

If you are like most clinicians, you ask yourself these questions every day. You rely on lab tests to make important decisions regarding the care and management of your patients but you are short on time. That's why you need a resource that can deliver to you accurate information in a timely manner at the point of care. That resource is the Clinician's Guide to Laboratory Medicine: Pocket.

Other books simply list causes of an abnormal lab test. Our book does so much more - it is the only book that walks you from abnormal lab test to diagnosis through a series of steps. Step 1... Step 2... Step 3... These are step-by-step approaches you will not find elsewhere.

The first two editions of this book were only available as part of a package containing the larger Clinician's Guide to Laboratory Medicine. This new 3rd edition, which will easily fit in your coat pocket, is now available alone.

Inside the book -

* Totally updated information to reflect the latest advances

* Over 100 differential diagnoses

* Nearly 40 redesigned algorithms

* More than 250 tables and boxes to allow for easy and quick access to key information

Whether you are a student, physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, or pharmacist, you will find that this pocket guide has all the tools necessary to tackle the challenges of lab test interpretation. See why so many have considered it a must-have book.

I am an NP student about to graduate and have purchased this book for my reference library. I wish I had gotten it prior to now. It is excellent! Not only does it have algorithms to follow in for diagnosing, but it also has information about causes of abnormal test results, approaches to care and diagnosis, and basic information to add to your clinical knowledge. I also have Ferri's Best Test; although I like Ferri's, I love this book and find the size (pocket sized) and value of the information invaluable to my practice. Plus, you cannot beat the price. You will not find a cheaper lab book with as much information and usability as this one.
By Kim Tharpe
PBL groups are becoming common place at most med schools. As a first year student, I know I was not alone in feeling completely lost when it came to interpreting lab values during these sessions. This information simply was not taught to us, so we would be forced to Google lab tests to figure out what they were really telling us. A lot of time would be wasted and often the searches led to useless results. Clinician's Guide to Laboratory Medicine: Pocket is an excellent, time-saving and more accurate alternative to this approach. It explains the basics of each laboratory test, the causes of abnormal values (i.e., the differential diagnoses one should consider), and the approach one should take following an abnormal result. It also provides several algorithms in the form of decision trees for assessing abnormal results. I can see this being an extremely useful resource in the years ahead during clerkship rotations and will be recommending this book to classmates.

In regards to other reviews that mentioned the font size, yes it is small but it should be a non-issue for the majority of med students with normal or myopic vision. If you're having trouble reading the text in this book, maybe it's time to invest in a good pair of reading glasses.

Using in-depth qualitative interviews, authors Herbert J. Rubin and Irene S. Rubin have researched topics ranging from community redevelopment programs to the politics of budgeting and been energized by the depth, thoroughness, and credibility of what was revealed. They describe in-depth qualitative interviewing from beginning to end, from its underlying philosophy and assumptions to project design, analysis and write up.

The authors began their book by contrasting "positivism" with "naturalist-interpretive paradigms", essentially painting an unflattering portrait of quantitatively focused research in an effort to make their interpretive-constructionist approach more appealing to researchers with a social agenda. They also relativized truth to the point that their approach makes benchmarking the data almost impossible. Furthermore they appeared to be hypersensitive to the need to appear credible to critics; it read like a bizarre prep course in politics rather than an overview of best practices in qualitative data collection. I was looking for some solid, grounded methods in qualitative interviewing and felt like I got a bouquet of anecdotes instead. For more balanced coverage of qualitative research methods check out Qualitative Inquiry and Research Design: Choosing among Five Approaches

This book covers not only the foundations of Interviewing, but also the methodology in detail. l enjoyed this book very much because the author suggests the way how the interviewers excercize interviewing. Very well organized.

Who Moved My Dentures dispels 13 different myths about long-term care and aging in America as told through human interest stories of people the author has met through his work as a healthcare executive, advocate and entertainer for older adults. It was written to educate and lessen fear about long-term care facilities and also to dignify and increase respect for the residents living in these facilities who can inspire us all through their attitude and approach to life.

The book is perfect for baby boomers, families and caregivers. You can learn about these places in a non-threatening way through a book that is full of the heart and soul of the seniors who live there. There is useful information for choosing facilities, a glossary as well as information about the financing and policing of the industry.

The FOREWORD was written by Dr. Charles Roadman, past president of the American Healthcare Association.

"Who Moved My Dentures" is must reading for baby boomers contemplating nursing home care for their parents, or thinking ahead some years when they may be residing themselves in such an institution. Many of us are apprehensive about aging, and Cirillo does a great job dispelling some of the myths of aging in America and what it's like living in an assisted care facility. In addition to being a healthcare professional, Cirillo entertains in diverse assisted living facilities, more than 300 shows a year on the east coast. Thus, he writes from an insider's view, and he has a unique perspective gained from experience at many different institutions. The myths Cirillo addresses in each chapter are the questions many of us with little experience have about such institutions; e.g., are they places to die vs. a temporary home to enjoy life, what types of activities can you do there, friendships, romance, visitors. The biggest take away for me was the information presented about long-term care insurance. The costs associated with assisted living, as with other health care costs, are very high in America. An unplanned extended stay in such a facility can severely impact the financial resources of families without some type of insurance protection. I recommend this short book (163 pages) as a good initial resource for someone considering assisted living.
By D. J. Paulish
This book gives a comprehensive view of the realities of making decisions when it comes to placing loved ones into nursing homes and assisted living facilities. The stories and events explained in the book are enlightening, happy, sad, and quite true. Having gone through such an experience, I wish I would have known about this book as it would have provided comfort and assurance in knowing the decisions our family made were the correct ones when it came time for the assisted living and nursing home experiences with our dad.

Cirillo makes hundreds of visits to the various institutions described in his book, so he sees firsthand the challenges and difficulties that we all must face someday, but he presents it in such a way, that makes for interesting and valuable reading.

This book is a must read for all those that have aging loved ones that may be facing elder care alternatives and it will definitely help ease the burden of decisions that will ultimately have to be made. I recommend this book to everyone.

It's not worth the $100+ price tag at all. You're better off buying it used, if you feel like you must have it. It's definitely for intro level students. Going through the suites is tedious and confusing because you don't know when exactly a presentation slide is ending or if there is just a long pause. There has to be better interactive learning software out there because this is so poorly made.
Also some textbooks (like Silverthorn's Human Physiology 5th edition) include access to iP when you register online.

This product is an absolutely great way to learn the hardest parts of A&P. I am a medical student, and I need to get a certain grade on my test to pursue my career, and thanks to this, I was able to fully understand each system and nail my test. This product breaks down the hardest systems of anatomy and physiology into kindergarten terms, so that you can understand the basics before you get into the hard material. Highly recommend for A&P students.

Qualitative Interviewing, Second Edition has been totally rewritten to add new examples and to better integrate the presentation of topics. Readers will see how the choice of topic influences question wording and how the questions asked influence the analysis. Authors Herbert and Irene Rubin have improved the presentation of matters that students have most trouble with, such as finding an interesting and viable topic, recognizing concepts, learning when and how aggressively to follow up, and figuring out ways to get published.

This book covers not only the foundations of Interviewing, but also the methodology in detail. l enjoyed this book very much because the author suggests the way how the interviewers excercize interviewing. Very well organized.

About the Author

Blandine Calais-Germain's lifelong involvement with dance, both as performer and teacher, eventually led to an interest in other physical disciplines, and then to more formal study of the complex and integrated movements of the body.

From 1977 to 1980 the author studied physiotherapy at the French School of Orthopedics and Massage in Paris. In physiotherapy, body movements are analyzed both in terms of their neurophysiological and mechanical aspects, which allows for a better understanding of the actual mechanisms of movement.

From her work with dance and physiotherapy, the author developed an innovative method for teaching the physical structures of anatomy in relation to movement. This method, the subject of her companion volumes Anatomy of Movement and Anatomy of Movement: Exercises, has been enthusiastically received in workshops that she presented for many years in France. Her two books have been translated and published throughout the world in many languages.

When I was in graduate school, I was a Teaching Fellow in physiology and went on to further studies in biochemistry. I also attended medical school for a while, but ended up working as a research scientist. Now, I teach meditation and have a developed yoga practice in addition to being a personal coach with graduate education in psychology as well. In short, I think I am well-qualified to evaluate this book.

In general, I love this author's work and particularly liked Anatomy of Movement. I didn't like the Female Pelvis quite as much, but I still think it is very good. If I was able to, I would rate it a 4.5. Like all of this writer's work, the material is thoughtfully developed and presented in an easy to understand manner. There are also lots of diagrams that are very clear and compliment the text.

The difficulty with the pelvic region is that it is very hard to visualize it in three dimensions. This presents a challenge to the author and I think that he does a very good job of conveying three dimensions through all different kinds of diagrams.

The book starts out with the basic skeltal structure and then adds more detail a little bit at a time. At the same time, corresponding functionality is discussed and this keeps the book interesting and helps with memory attention. The average person can certainly go through this book easily, which is a testimony to the clarity and organization of the book.
