Gabbard cogently sums up the main categories of contemporary psychodynamic theory and has written a handbook that usefully guides the clinician in approaching clients from a psychoanalytic/psychodynamic perspective. Gabbard is well-versed in the research on efficacy, which is important in the era of evidence-based practice. Psychodynamic practice has not only a long history and a vast literature, but in recent years psychodynamic practice has been researched in well-designed studies and there is abundant evidence of its effectiveness for certain conditions and disorders.By Daniel Martin
Gabbard has entirely reorganized the text from the fourth edition. He held off until the DSM-5 was published, then reordered chapters and moved sections around to reflect the clinician's universe in 2014.
All in all, a wonderful book, and I am now going to look into his other American Psychiatric Association press texts.
