Featuring current research, high-quality scholarship, and an appealing design, UNDERSTANDING ABNORMAL BEHAVIOR, 10th Edition, provides an inviting and stimulating look into abnormal psychology. The first abnormal psychology book to present a thoroughly integrated multicultural perspective -- based on the authors' view that cross-cultural comparisons can greatly enhance the understanding of disorders -- the text provides extensive coverage and integration of multicultural models, explanations, and concepts. It also continues the multipath model introduced in the 9th edition, emphasizing the importance of considering biological, psychological, social, and sociocultural factors, as well as their interactions in the etiology of mental disorders. The book helps you gain an understanding of abnormal behavior as scientific and clinical endeavors, while providing insight into the tools that mental health professionals use to study and treat disorders. It also begins to discuss the proposed changes in the APA's DSM-5 definition of mental disorders and its implications, including its change of focus from a categorical to a dimensional system of personality assessment.

I've been using this text in my Abnormal Psychology course for several editions. The 10th edition is significantly different from the 9th edition--not to mention more expensive. Chapters have been added and material has been re-arranged. There is a considerable amount of information about the new DSM revision. Students who are taking an Abnormal Psychology course might want to compare texts (table of contents, sample information) before deciding to use an older edition in an attempt to save money. Also, this new edition does not have a printed study guide available for students (unlike all previous editions). The publisher wants students to spend even more money to purchase online study help. While I liked previous editions better, this is still the best text available in the area. Very accurate, very comprehensive, doesn't include overly-long case history examples. I like the way it has separate chapters for the mood disorders and suicide because the authors see the two as very different disorders. Also, the authors take a 'multipath' perspective when examining the various disorders. This explains the disorders from the psychological, biological, social and sociocultural perspectives.

Students might want to look in the front of this edition where it describes the changes that have been made since the previous edition.

UPDATE -- DECEMBER 2012. Now that the new DSM is going to be available this text will be helpful because it includes information from the DSM IV and DSM V. Might help making the transition easier. For example --notes the change from 'Mental Retardation' to 'Intellectual Disability.'

This book is supposedly updated to reflect the changes contained within the DSM 5. The only problem is that the DSM 5 isn't out yet and this book went to print with changes that ended up not being included. Very irresponsible on the part of the authors and publisher!
