I'm always surprised and a little dismayed by the relative lack of evidence that seems to go in to so much clinical decision-making, especially when it comes to diagnostic tests. Its therefore gratifying to see Evidence-Based Diagnosis make the case for a more thoughtful and empirically grounded approach to treatment. This book is wonderfully clear and simple, presenting sophisticated statistical ideas with just enough math and no more. As a lay reader with an interest in medical decision-making, I've found this book a tremendous help in formulating questions to ask my own doctor. Particularly illuminating is the chapter on how to evaluate the benefit of diagnostic tests, which are now so frequently marketed directly to patients. The authors explain in clear language the wide variety of errors in the collection and interpretation of data which can lead astray even intelligent and honorable researchers. Especially helpful are the chapter-end problems, with complete solutions provided at the back of the book.
