Download Evidence-Based Diagnosis (Practical Guides to Biostatistics and Epidemiology) [Kindle Edition] from mediafire, rapishare, and mirror link Evidence-Based Diagnosis explains diagnostic, screening, and prognostic tests in clinical medicine. The authors' approach is based on many years of experience teaching physicians in a clinical research training program. Although needing only a minimum of mathematics, the quantitative discussions in this book are deeper and more rigorous than in most introductory texts. The book includes numerous worked examples and 60 problems (with answers) based on real clinical situations and journal articles. This book is a great choice for anyone looking to select, develop, or apply medical tests. Topics covered include: the diagnostic process; test reliability and accuracy; testing and treatment thresholds; critical appraisal of studies of diagnostic, screening and prognostic tests; test independence and methods of combining tests; quantifying treatment benefits using randomized trials and observational studies; Bayesian interpretation of P values and confidence intervals; challenges for evidence-based diagnosis; likelihood ratios and ROC curves. I'm always surprised and a little dismayed by the relative lack of evidence that seems to go in to so much clinical decision-making, especially when it comes to diagnostic tests. Its therefore gratifying to see Evidence-Based Diagnosis make the case for a more thoughtful and empirically grounded approach to treatment. This book is wonderfully clear and simple, presenting sophisticated statistical ideas with just enough math and no more. Clinicians and researchers should find the discussion of how to use data for decisions both engaging and useful - Josh AngristBy josh angrist
As a lay reader with an interest in medical decision-making, I've found this book a tremendous help in formulating questions to ask my own doctor. Particularly illuminating is the chapter on how to evaluate the benefit of diagnostic tests, which are now so frequently marketed directly to patients. The authors explain in clear language the wide variety of errors in the collection and interpretation of data which can lead astray even intelligent and honorable researchers. Especially helpful are the chapter-end problems, with complete solutions provided at the back of the book.By John F. Gerhardt
