Being in a BA program for Human Services for the last 3.5 years, I've read three or four Corey texts. In general, they write a good, comprehensive book, and this one is no different. This serves as an excellent entry point to many of the topics that should be addressed when entering the helping field, including ethical issues, internal conflict, boundaries with clients, and cultural understandings. That being said, I've been assigned it as a text in my 4th year and it is a bit late in my studies to use a text such as this. Regardless, it has good information to offer and I recommend it.

The Coreys do just about everything that can be expected from an introduction to the field of counseling. They set the expectation of becoming a pretty good listener and responder, and present many helpful strategies to achieve that goal. In Chapter 4, they explore some of the difficulties a beginner will face, especially the section on "Understanding and Dealing with Difficult Clients." Their approach, however, is very mainstream, which leaves slim pickings for such fields as substance abuse counseling or working with troubled youth. It is a good first text, but requires supplemental readings for those interested in a survey of the various counseling fields in the profession.
