Epidemiology of Chronic Disease: Global Perspectives presents the most up-to-date information on the epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis, risk factors and preventive factors of common chronic diseases. Special sections of each chapter focus on controversial topics in the epidemiology of each disease that facilitates active discussion of molecular mechanisms of disease pathogenesis and the relevant epidemiologic issues pertaining to the prevention and control of chronic diseases. Covering epidemiology of all major chronic diseases ranked in the top twenty causes of death globally, as well as selected minor conditions that significantly afflict the human population, this comprehensive text provides readers with an excellent basis for examining current hypotheses regarding chronic disease epidemiology.

Epidemiology of Chronic Disease serves as a great introduction to the epidemiology as well as the clinical/pathologic considerations for many of the major chronic diseases encountered today. The text is a solid point of reference for any individual interested in a clinical and public health understanding of chronic disease from cancer to stroke to AIDS, to name a few.

As a medical student with minimal public health background, I find this book to be invaluable in helping to further build my clinical picture of commonly encountered diseases. Each chapter provides a relevant and succinct review of the pathology of the disease process; the chapter then proceeds to the epidemiological of the disease globally. The book is remarkably well-written, reading easily despite the dense nature of the material. I imagine that the book would be a solid reference point for students of public health, as I have yet to find another book that rivals the comprehensive nature of Dr. Harris's text.

I believe every medical student should own this book!
By Juliette N. Oram
I agree with the previous reviewer that "every medical student should own" this book. However, individuals without a great deal of training in medicine or physiology will have a hard time following Harris's explanations. He goes into great detail on the physiological mechanisms underlying epidemiological results and seldom explains the many technical terms he uses. The book would also benefit from a chapter that reviews basic statistical methods and epidemiological models.
