As an MD/JD student who was already interested in health policy and advocacy for reform, this book was a terrifically concise and comprehensive look at US Health Policy. It reminded me of much of what I already had learned from following the news and other sources, and introduced me to a plethora of knowledge based in historical and current policy. The organization of the book is superb, making what is a daunting and challenging subject easier to understand by approaching discrete topics while interlacing themes of financing, delivery, and political interests throughout the book. The patient and provider vignettes situated before each section don't seem contrived and provide a good perspective of how policy can affect everyday actors in the health system. The book presents multiple perspectives on health policy, and tells the hard truths when evaluating each, not shying away from criticizing the effects of profit-driven entities in the health care system while still remaining objective compared to many other voices for health reform. The chapter outlining the ways Canada, the UK, Germany, and Japan provide universal insurance coverage was also eye-opening, and should be required reading for anyone holding an opinion about how we should reform the US system. If you are someone who works in health care, has frequent encounters with the medical system, or has the capacity to influence how the system is run, read this book!

A comprehensive yet readable review of the U.S. healthcare system, and of the various policies that have been implemented and proposed to solve its problems. This is a textbook, and reads like one, though it is definitely more readable that most. Given the complexity of the subject, however, a clearly organized, carefully documented approach is probably a good thing. The authors cover all the bases, they are very clear, and they do not show any overt bias. (All readers might not agree with this: an extensive totting up of the results of our market oriented system does suggest that there is perhaps a better way). Very, very useful to this general reader who simply wanted to improve her understanding of the system.

Divorcing a Narcissist

Divorcing a Narcissist: Advice from the Battlefield- Prior to stepping onto the battlefield with a Narcissist, it is imperative to know their playbook both forwards and backwards. The behavior of individuals with Narcissistic Personality Disorder generally defies logic but sadly, their tactics in the Family Court System often fool Judges, Commissioners, Attorneys, Minor’s Counsel, Social Workers, Therapists and even trained Evaluators. Narcissists are the masters of manipulation and projection and are known to launch stealth assaults that will leave their victims in an utter state of confusion and desperation. Victims are often left shattered and without a voice because they feel that no one could possibly believe or understand what they are silently enduring.

Author, Tina Swithin, understands what it’s like to divorce a narcissist. Tina spent over four years on the battlefield of the Family Court System while acting as her own attorney in a desperate attempt to protect her two young daughters. While Tina’s first book, Divorcing a Narcissist: One Mom’s Battle details Tina’s personal journey and court battle, her new book offers solid advice and sanity-saving wisdom for transforming from victim to survivor. Education is power and Divorcing a Narcissist: Advice from the Battlefield is your personal guide and resource for navigating through high-conflict divorce.

Those who have never been in an adversarial situation with a narcissist find it hard to believe the things that happen when you face one in court. The cliché's "it takes two to tango" and "all divorces are bad but will calm down when everyone moves on" do NOT apply here. Imagine being a bully's target for years with very little resources to help you. Tina put's the nightmare in book form and allows others to tell their story..... Thank you Tina for giving us a voice....

I would recommend this book as well as Tina's first book One Mom's Battle. If you've been with anyone with NPD (narcissistic personality disorder) or just think they might be someone with NPD: YOU NEED HELP! Divorce puts everyone involved in a fog and you CAN NOT afford to be in a fog with that "special someone". YOUR KIDS LIVES are at stake, their safety, emotional stability and security, their future spouses- it's up to YOU to get them as safe as you possibly can and the courts and Social Services just don't get what you're going through- they're overburdened and sadly, most just want your case to be done. Since Tina went pro se (no divorce attorney) most of the time, she knows the ins and outs and actually faced off with a judge who ignored her STBX's (soon to be exes) lies! I Cheered outloud! I know you're tired, burnt out and just ready to be done but read this book first. If someone you're married to is willing to treat you like dirt, your kids like pawns during your marriage- it's going to be a helluva battle to divorce them and you have support with these books as well as Tina's website and face book page. Google One Mom's Battle- ask questions, don't give up and know that God loves you and loathes what has happened to you. He wants you and your kids to be safe but you have to help Him out! RESEARCH! I also recommend Cindy Burrells books "why is he so mean to me" and "God is My Witness- making a case for biblical divorce". Hang in there- you can do it.

Is the prospective reader interested in a quick survey of the American health care system? Then this book would probably be of value to you. Does one want a detailed exposition of that system? This would not work so well for that purpose.

This volume covers the waterfront.

The first set of chapters provides a good background: characteristics of the healthcare system, general perspectives on health care delivery (including cultural vales and what we mean by health), a history of the system, and so on.

Other central issues are covered chapter by chapter. Examples of the coverage: the role of technology, healthcare finance, managed care, long-term care, cost-access-quality (all three covered in one chapter leaves actual details thinly covered, but it does provide an entree to these linked concerns), health policy, and the future of the healthcare system. Other issues are covered as well.

All in all, a helpful volume if you want a quick overview of the complexity of the healthcare system.

While the question formats are everything but NCLEX, I found the content review challenging (beyond the basic Q & A or vocab style of workbooks from simpler subjects). Dense... a lot to review even when only 5 pages per chapter in some cases. I could quickly see areas I needed to reread before the test. The questions seemed to mirror very much the topics chosen for my actual tests. Highly recommend. There are plenty of NCLEX study guides out there. I don't feel the lack of NCLEX practice is a negative to the workbook. I liked being able to focus on gaps in my content knowledge rather than play the game of "what is the NCLEX question really asking (or tricking) me". NCLEX prep tends to make me feel like I have to prove how well I take tests, not demonstrate what I actually know and have studied. The Med-Surg text is intense and detailed technical reading. It often requires two or more reads to get it straight and retain the bulk of it- and since there's rarely time for that, the workbook makes better use of your time by focusing on your weak spots, without being too simple or drill-like.

Full agreement with prior five star reviews. I would like to add that the reader gets a balanced but frank assessment of where the medical system and commanders succeeded, and where in some cases they failed sadly. Of particular interest are (a)the story of the lack of malaria preventive measures in certain South Pacific commands until they learned the hard way, (b) fascinating description of the development of practical treatment for psychiatric problems (combat fatigue), and (c) scathing criticism of the painful disability suffered by some 30,000 infantrymen in Northern Europe because of trench foot, much of which might have been avoided by better command decisions. Also excellent discussion of how the mushrooming military medical establishment tied in with the civilian professional services.

For World War II buffs this is one of those books that concentrates on behind-the-battlefield activity. The author does a superb and comprehensive job in informing the reader of the status of medicine and Allied medical organization during World War II. - I give the author five stars because he: (1) described the contemporary diseases and medicines as well as types of battle casualties; (2) narrates how the medics and field hospitals followed the troops into battle; and (3) gives us a good understanding of the development of military medical organization and the problems it had. On top of that, Cowdry keeps interesting a subject that otherwise could be boring, and, better yet, he starts at the beginning (Pearl Harbor) and takes us right through the war to the final atomic bomb and how the medics adapted and continued to do their stuff, including work on POW's. Good imagery to keep the reader's attention. Covers all theaters. An excellent background history, essential for students of WWII history.
