In a world rapidly becoming more globally integrated by the hour, it is increasingly important that nurses are culturally aware of the differences immigrant patients bring to the healthcare setting. This textbook is notable in that it will introduce you to some of the remarkable variables of other cultures. Written from an American perspective, we are separated from many cultures by far more than just a language barrier -- our entire world view can be dramatically different. This text will help you understand our differences better and give you practical therapeutic solutions for bridging cultural chasms.By P. Kingsriter
Make no mistake, for each people-group presented (spanning the globe) the text merely scratches the surface of the cultures' complexity. Each culture study could cover its own 700+ page volume, I'm sure. However, you will be better equipped to provide culturally competent and relevant care after reading this text. It is well-organized and information is easy to reference. Regarding my professional background, I work in a Level 1 Trauma Center in a major metropolitan hospital, where we have daily contact with patients speaking a wide variety of languages. In each section, I've discovered some eye-opening gems of detail that really help fill in the gaps of my understanding in areas where I'd had trouble making connections with a particular people group.
If you're looking for an excellent introduction to a wide variety of cultures and how they relate to nursing care, this is a superb text. I highly recommend it.
(As a supplement, I would recommend a couple of exemplary studies of the rift between cultures, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down and the documentary God Grew Tired of Us.)
I ordered this book for a school class. So far it has been a welll versed text book that is easy to read/By Emily Neal
