From the Author
The year 2011 has been proposed as "World Veterinary Year." It is appropriate that veterinarians appreciate the opportunities available to them, and that the public comes to appreciate the many roles that veterinarians can fill. Veterinarians in general private practice have a more diverse workday than their physician counterparts. Veterinarians examine animals, perform anesthesia and surgery, evaluate radiographs, diagnose perplexing diseases, and work with multiple species.
Veterinarians have the opportunity to specialize, or to work in research, for industry, in public health, or for animal shelters. They are highly valued for their wealth of knowledge and are admired for their compassion in working with animals and people. The veterinary degree provides choice and versatility in daily work as well as in the long-term. Economic and social challenges do exist in the veterinary profession, however. The last chapter of this book details those challenges and discusses opportunities for the future.
The 12 years since the first edition have brought many changes to veterinary medicine, yet many choices remain the same. In this edition, the information about private practice has been enhanced, including more information about specific interests and specialties within that segment. The section about government jobs reflects changes in government agencies, such as the addition of the Department of Homeland Security. An important expansion in this edition of the book is the inclusion of web sites for almost every resource cited in the text, so the reader can easily investigate if further information is sought.
