The history of the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center vividly reveals how cancer treatment in America -- and our attitudes toward the disease -- has changed since the middle of the twentieth century.

One of the preeminent cancer centers in the world, M. D. Anderson is also one of the first medical institutions devoted exclusively to caring for people with cancer and researching treatments and cures for the disease. Historian James S. Olson's narrative relates the story of the center's founding and of the surgeons, radiologists, radiotherapists, nurses, medical oncologists, scientists, administrators, and patients who built M. D. Anderson into the world-class institution it is today.

Through interviews with M. D. Anderson's leaders and patients, Olson brings to life the struggle to understand and treat cancer in America. A cancer survivor who has himself been treated at the center, Olson imbues this history with humor, passion, and humanity.

My mother was treated at MD Andersen, a great hospital, but she didn't mKe it. I bought this as part of my information seeking and struggle with grief. It is an interesting history and I finished it.

I was successfully treated for Inflammatory Breast Cancer at MD Anderson Cancer Center ten years ago. I continue to go for appointments in various clinics as I do my follow up and prevention. MDACC is a very unique place with a culture that makes you feel everyone who treats you really wants to see you be cured. Over many years I have wondered how did a place like this come about? Where did this culture come from and how do they maintain it? This book by James Olson tells that story and its a fascinating one. Its is a story of pioneers in the field who weren't just good at their medical jobs, but they were leaders as well. It was also motivating to learn about some of the patients who endure tough treatments due to their overwhelming desire to survive and to help move the ball forward toward a cure. I feel the book also gives you insight into the pioneering or maverick spirit of Houston, TX, a very unique place in its own right with a spirit of philanthropy that I believe is unmatched. The Texas Medical Center would not be what it is today without the giving hearts of many of Houston's oldest families. Although I truly love MD Anderson Cancer Center, I was not expecting this to be a page turning book, but it was!
