If you are training as a new EMT-A, doing a refresher or raising your certification from I-85/99, this is a terrible book. If you're simply trying to learn things that don't really affect your ability to care for a patient, you might want it. Let's see why.
1. Sheer volume.
- 1500+ pages x 2 columns x 55+ lines (per column) x 12 words per line = 1.98 million words. And not just any words. Words that you won't possibly care about as an EMT. Five dollar words. Words that are designed to make you look intelligent. "I just assessed my patient's Hering-Breuer Reflex. It's fine." (Pg 145). There are of course, pictures and charts that lower that word count of 1.98 million, but not significantly.
- The book reads very much as if multiple people contributed to its writing, but no one thought to edit. In English class, your professor would circle entire paragraphs in red and write, "wordy." Most of the subject matter could be written in one-fifth the words to get you through the test process (or to work adequately as an EMT). Here's an example: The **Paramedic** book written by Brady has a section of important terms (words you should know) for the obstetrics section of the book. The list of important terms is 2-3 inches high. This same section in this book is 3 pages, and includes terms such as "nuchal cord" and "ductus arteriosus" because how can you be an EMT without knowing those words?
2. It is full of contradictions and errors.
- "Do not unnecessarily delay treatment for use of PPE" is a gem you'll find on page 32. This early in most EMS books (and certainly for the NREMT test) you'll need to know that the *FIRST* thing you do is make sure the scene is safe and that you are wearing PPE.
