If you are a therapist intrigued by the new Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and want to get a clear straightforward feel for what it's all about, look no further than this book.
Russ Harris explains in layman's language how and why mindfulness, Acceptance and Values underlie the ACT approach and illustrates how you can start applying it in your clinical practice today.
This is ACT made simple and engaging - but not simplistic.
ACT was invented by scientists and eggheads, with an unflinching devotion to getting the conceptual and scientific underpinnings right. This they largely did, but at times at the cost of intelligibility for the lay clinician. Don't get me wrong, I love the rigorous science and elegant theory behind ACT. But it may not be everyone's cup of tea on first contact with the work.
The genius of Russ Harris is to have written a Therapist Manual which, while remaining faithful to the underlying model and seamlessly grounded in theory, makes the approach luminous and common sense, a makes it relevant to your clincal practice. Not a mean feat when one considers the revolutionary approach that acceptance promotes : stop trying to get rid of unwanted feelings and thoughts, concentrate on moving in the direction of your values.
ACT made simple covers all the bases, promotes clinical flexibility and also carefully explores pitfalls and possible snags in applying ACT in your practice.
This is both therapist manual and workbook.
The best introduction to ACT as a clinical tool yet written.
By M. B. Schoendorff
As a novice ACT therapist, this book has been amazing to use! it makes what can be quite challenging concepts a whole lot easier, and when I combined it with the DVD from another instructional on ACT, it's made the whole thing come alive. The readability of this book makes it an excellent, 'no-nonsense' approach to learning ACT. If you're at all curious about ACT, I'd go for this one first - you can use more complex texts once you've got through to the heart of the approach, and this book has the 'heart' in bucketloads.

The Thirteenth Edition of Pharmaceutical Calculations represents a thorough update of this textbook, which for over six decades has met the needs of students in this subject area. This edition's Introduction presents a stepwise approach in solving calculations problems. Each chapter of this edition includes learning objectives that direct the student's focus and provide a basis for self-assessment following completion. Coverage includes new material in areas such as e-prescriptions, medication orders in nursing homes, hospice care, patient self-administration of analgesia, intravenous infusion rate calculations for the critical care patient, and patient conversions to alternative treatment plans.

A companion Website includes the fully searchable text and an interactive quiz bank with more pharmaceutical calculation review problems.

One major drawback: There is no solutions manual. Granted, the answers are at the ends of chapters, and this is all right for the most part. But there are some questions for which a simple answer is inadequate. Either the chapter lesson leaves the student unprepared to answer the question, or the wording of the question is ambiguous, so the student has to work backwards from the answer. A book of highly technical calculations, especially by the 13th edition should have a solutions manual.
By JT
This book in my opinion is a waste of money. It's poorly written, the expamples in each chapter are nothing like examples given in classroom setting, the author uses his own method of solving problems. The end of chapter exercises are pointless to do because they only provide the answer and not how they got to the answer.

The chapters in this book are either hit or miss. The book has some excellent well-written and informative chapters that really help you to gain a better perspective of the field and issues surrounding health research. However, the 3rd chapter reads more like a draft in need of several edits. It is rife with psychometric and statistical errors. Furthermore, the author makes gross generalizations about her own research that are not valid nor based on sound research practices. I'm shocked that the book could be full of quality work by leading professionals, yet have a chapter on that is on complete opposite side of the spectrum. The only thing that kept me reading the book is because it is required for a class I am taking. I would fully recommend removing ch.3 for the next edition, if the publishers asked my opinion.
By Kevin Linares
For anyone interested in theories of health behavior, this is the place to start. Some of the most commonly used theories are explained here in detail, and there is even an explanation for why the theories that are in there are included. However, sometimes while reading about the theories you wonder why there are so many words, when many fewer would do. Sometimes you might read a paragraph and think that you would have absorbed the information much better if, instead of that paragraph, you had read two sentences and a diagram.
Nonetheless, this is a great book to introduce you to common theories, and a great reference for a junior researcher working on intervention design or literature review.

Curricular changes in the health professions, coupled with a growing acceptance of the Internet as a tool for daily living, have contributed to a climate of change and opportunity for health sciences libraries. A Guide to Developing End User Education Programs in Medical Libraries will help graduate students in library science, entry-level medical librarians, and experienced educators to understand best practices and to build, expand, and improve medical library-sponsored educational programs.

A Guide to Developing End User Education Programs in Medical Libraries is designed to aid and inform professionals who develop, teach, or evaluate end-user education programs in health sciences libraries. Eighteen case studies represent the ideas and approaches of more than fifteen private and public institutions in the United States and the Caribbean. The studies focus on effective end-user programs for medical information electives, veterinary medicine programs, health care informatics, and evidence-based medicine, plus instructional programs for teaching residents, ThinkPad-facilitated instruction, and more. The guide also examines how several medical libraries have created and expanded their end-user education programs.

The contributors to A Guide to Developing End User Education Programs in Medical Libraries are health sciences librarians from teaching hospitals, medical/dental/veterinary schools, and health professions-focused universities in a dozen U.S. states and the West Indies. Each of them is involved in designing, teaching, and evaluating user education.

I was really disappointed (and surprised) to open this $160 textbook (in 2011) and find all the pages are printed in black and white. Give me a break. There is a small insert section of about a dozen pages that has color pictures of some meats and vegetables. That's it. The other other ~700 pages, the actual textbook content, is all grayscale! There is a lot of information in this book, with a lot of diagrams, and photos of a many foods, ingredients and techniques. And it's all in black and white. Students deserve better, especially for the high cost.

There are few other annoyances with this book, sorry. In some chapters the author includes a "Professional Profile" where she highlights careers in the food industry. Several of these furtive advertisements are for big snack food and processed-food conglomerates, including Kellog, Kraft and Wrigley. For me, it felt like a strange choice for a nutrition textbook. I found myself wondering if the author had been compensated by any of the companies? I would have preferred to read about some of the many nutrition careers with organic/local businesses, education/school lunch, or the National Health Service Corps...or even the military; instead of snack food companies.

One other oddity I can remember. In the section about coffee, the author mentions and describes many ways of brewing (drip, espresso, percolator, vacuum, etc.), but excludes the French press. As far I know this is still a very popular method of brewing coffee.

Anyway, I'm nitpicking with that one. My main gripe is that for such a high sales price the publisher only provided black & white content. The content is informative. However, I feel that the subjects of food and science should be printed in color to help convey the information.

This is good book for Dietetic and Culinary professionals. It is written in a form that is easy to understand. I will be keeping this book in my collection.

From Publishers Weekly

To get a nuts-and-bolts understanding of heart surgeons—from the decisions they make in the operating room to the impact of colleagues, patients and pharmaceutical companies on their jobs—Morris (The Tycoons) embedded himself for six months in the elite cardiac surgery center at Columbia-Presbyterian hospital in New York City. Unlike some noncardiac surgeries where music blares in the operating room, an aortic valve replacement for a retired pharmacy executive, says Morris, is a solemn affair, the calm briefly interrupted only when the patient fibrillates, his heart muscle fibers fluttering irregularly. The author finds it exhilarating to watch as a surgeon basically built... a new heart for a five-day-old baby with a major heart malformation. But even technical marvels can't save a desperately ill four-year-old girl after a heart transplant. The reserved Craig Smith, the unit's head, who gained national fame when he performed a quadruple bypass on former President Clinton, impresses readers with his skill and deep concern for his patients. From detailing the workings of the heart's chambers and valves to the bald economics of cardiac surgery—including Smith's income ($1.5 million in 2004), the hospital's billing and collection procedures and forecasts on universal health insurance—Morris masterfully breaks down complex jargon, procedures and policies for a lay audience. The Surgeons is an intriguing glimpse into the lives and work of the heart surgeons at New York's Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital, one of the world's top cardiac surgery centers.

Author Charles Morris provides an intimate look at the work of these virtuosos who hold lives in their hands every day. We get to know such artisans as Craig Smith, head of cardiothoracic surgery, who is well-known for doing the quadruple bypass on former President Bill Clinton; Eric Rose, a cardiothoracic surgeon and chairman of the Department of Surgery; Mehmet Oz, senior adult cardiac surgeon, well-known author of three New York Times best-sellers, and regular contributor on Oprah; and many others, whose names will be better known as a result of this book.

From his unparalleled access to attend surgeries and meetings, Morris gives us an incredibly insightful view into how these surgeons think. It's a real-world, insider's look at the people, problems, and politics in a major hospital. As an example, he explores the politics between the surgeons and the interventional cardiologists, and talks about how their disciplines are converging.

The book tackles a variety of topics, from how the heart works and the history of heart surgery to health care policy and directions for high tech medicine. It even explores the innovative new business models pursued by Columbia-Presbyterian. An intriguing bit of trivia that Morris reveals is that Thomas J. Watson, former chairman of IBM, made a personal project of financing and developing the heart-lung bypass machine, which is still used today in many open-heart surgeries.

Morris excels at sharing the stories of surgeries and the patients benefiting from them. We get an intimate look at patients that made it and those that didn't.
With amazing detail, "The Surgeons: Life and Death in a Top Heart Center" provides a view of many behind-the-scene challenges of modern cardiac surgery. I spent four days as a patient in the cardiac unit at New York's Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital while author Charles Morris shadowed surgeons "unrestricted" in the same unit for an entire year.

It is quite fascinating to read what doctors are thinking, feeling and doing while life is literally in their hands. Cardiac surgery is one of the few procedures in which, at every moment, "the patient is at risk of sudden death." As a result of many long years of medical training and incredible sacrifice, cardiothoracic surgeons provide their patients the gift we all crave, longevity and quality of life.

Charles Morris writes a fascinating description of what happens once a heart patient is anesthetized on the operating table. Prep work takes about an hour. The patient is "shaved, and painted almost head to toe with bright red antiseptic; various monitoring leads and hookups are affixed around the body, breathing and imaging tubes pushed down the throat, a flow monitoring catheter is threaded through the jugular vein" into the heart, and a urinary catheter into the bladder. The patient is wrapped with yards and yards of sterile tape and gauze and "eyes are taped shut."

When Columbia-Presbyterian heart surgeon Craig Smith, MD recently opened my chest, the mitral and aortic valves were beyond repair with healed endocarditis and a worn out aortic root. In 8.5 hours of surgery, Dr. Smith skillfully removed scar tissue and replaced both valves with bovine (cow) tissue and the aorta with a 28mm graft.

A visionary investigation that will change the way we think about health care: how and why it is failing, why expanding coverage will actually make things worse, and how our health care can be transformed into a transparent, affordable, successful system.
In 2007, David Goldhill’s father died from infections acquired in a hospital, one of more than two hundred thousand avoidable deaths per year caused by medical error. The bill was enormous—and Medicare paid it. These circumstances left Goldhill angry and determined to understand how world-class technology and personnel could coexist with such carelessness—and how a business that failed so miserably could be paid in full. Catastrophic Care is the eye-opening result.

Blending personal anecdotes and extensive research, Goldhill presents us with cogent, biting analysis that challenges the basic preconceptions that have shaped our thinking for decades. Contrasting the Island of health care with the Mainland of our economy, he demonstrates that high costs, excess medicine, terrible service, and medical error are the inevitable consequences of our insurance-based system. He explains why policy efforts to fix these problems have invariably produced perverse results, and how the new Affordable Care Act is more likely to deepen than to solve these issues.

Goldhill steps outside the incremental and wonkish debates to question the conventional wisdom blinding us to more fundamental issues. He proposes a comprehensive new way, where the customer (the patient) is first—a system focused on health and maintaining it, a system strong and vibrant enough for our future.

If you think health care is interesting only to institutes and politicians, think again: Catastrophic Care is surprising, engaging, and brimming with insights born of questions nobody has thought to ask. Above all it is a book of new ideas that can transform the way we understand a subject we often take for granted.

Written for a general (but thinking) audience, this book could really turn around all public discourse on health care and become a seminal work on the subject.

The divisive health care debate of recent years is centered over WHO should shoulder astronomic medical costs. The issue of taming the exorbitant prices and costs is relegated to the side issue of waste and abuse. David Goldhill takes a new and different approach. He puts aside the standard assumption that health care is somehow exempt from the normal rules of economic activity. He focuses on WHY the costs became so exorbitant in the first place. Goldhill shows persuasively that the costs are the result of the very design of our current medical system, and the only way to bring the costs down to earth is to REPLACE entirely the current economic arrangements of our medicine - both the private insurance system and Medicare/Medicaid.

That's a book of new ideas. These ideas are breakthrough innovative, brilliant, deeply thought through; analysis superb. As with all things new and complex, it requires an effort to understand. If you have any background or interest in economics, even the economics of everyday life, give it more consideration.

We aren't going to solve our nation's fiscal problems without fresh thinking on health care, which consumes almost 18% of our GDP, with no end in sight to its enormous growth. This brilliant new book reframes the national conversation about health care. Currently the debate is framed around health coverage: who gets covered, how plans compete, what Medicare/Medicaid should and shouldn't pay for, etc. This framing assumes that paying for health care through a surrogate, like a health plan or Medicare, is a priori the only way of doing business in health care.

David Goldhill believes that assumption is in fact the root cause of the problems in health care. A businessman in the entertainment industry, he was blissfully unaware of some of the failings of our health care system--until he encountered them full force with his father's hospitalization and death from infection. He wondered why the healthcare system played by an entirely different set of rules than he did in the business world. He studied the problem for a few years, and this book is the result.

He makes a strong case that surrogates drive costs up and quality down, and our health care system is on a crash-course to devastate our economy. He says that we as Americans cherish the myth that we don't really pay for our own health care, our health plan or Medicare does. That myth, says Goldhill, is the core of the problem in our health care system, and the seed of the solution.

Goldhill's perspective and his proposed solutions are unorthodox and will likely generate some controversy. But given the serious problems in our health care system, this incisive book is critical and a must-read for policymakers on both sides of the aisle.
