This practical guide helps therapists from virtually any specialty or theoretical orientation choose and adapt mindfulness practices most likely to be effective with particular patients, while avoiding those that are contraindicated. The authors provide a wide range of meditations that build the core skills of focused attention, mindfulness, and compassionate acceptance. Vivid clinical examples show how to weave the practices into therapy, tailor them to each patient's needs, and overcome obstacles. Therapists also learn how developing their own mindfulness practice can enhance therapeutic relationships and personal well-being. The Appendix offers recommendations for working with specific clinical problems. Free audio downloads (narrated by the authors) and accompanying patient handouts for selected meditations from the book are available at www.sittingtogether.com.

“Sitting Together: Essential Skills for Mindfulness-Based Psychotherapy” is an extraordinary book in which the authors provide a deep well of information about practical ways mindfulness meditation can inform and enhance psychotherapy. Written for psychotherapists “from virtually any specialty, theoretical orientation, or practice setting” it successfully fills a gap in the field by guiding the reader in specific ways to introduce and bring mindfulness practices into psychotherapy.

It is well thought out and organized in a way that the material is clear and easily accessible. This book is full of suggestions for therapists and clients at all levels of mindfulness practice. It addresses the reality of patients’ differing needs as well as the fact that they may benefit from a variety of different approaches at different stages in the therapeutic process. The authors’ vast experience with the subject is evident in the many case vignettes and practical exercises they offer to aid therapists in providing mindfulness-based psychotherapy and in furthering their own personal mindfulness practices.

A detailed appendix is included in which the authors suggest specific practices that can be used when working with particular psychological disorders, populations and for clinicians’ own mindfulness development. The authors are very generous with handouts and recordings available on their website. Many thanks to the authors for this groundbreaking book.

I got certified in Mindfulness and Psychotherapy through the Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy a few years ago, but was still having difficulty incorporating mindfulness into my practice, other than in a very limited way. This book has helped clarify some lingering questions I still had (especially when it comes to working with trauma), and has inspired me to begin to take healthy risks with folks who're not at all familiar with mindfulness and it's potential to support their overall recovery efforts.

What I find especially helpful is that the Appendix includes a categorization of suggestions on how to select the various practices with different clinical issues and populations.

I really enjoy the title and the book cover - it inspires a sense of ease and calm, and connection!
