Gostin's timely book offers the first systematic definition and theory of public health law. Basing his definition on a broad notion of the government's inherent responsibility to advance the population's health and well-being, he develops a rich understanding of the government's fundamental powers and duties. By analyzing constitutional powers and limits, as well as statutory, administrative, and tort law, Public Health Law vividly shows how law can become a potent tool for the realization of a healthier and safer population.

The best part of this book is its index. After reading the Showalter Law in Health Administration text, this Gostin Public Health Law text makes me want to stick a fork in my eye. I struggled to make it through every chapter. It's verbose, unbelievably redundant, and over-complicates and beleaguers simple material. I would not recommend it. If you are in a course that uses it as a primary text book, drop the course.By PDF
Public Health Law has not attracted academic interest in Europe among Medical Law professionals. De facto, it has remained an untouched area. Therefore I was amazed to find this comprehensive title. Although it bases much on US law and case law, it still captures the essential points of PHLaw applicable everywhere. It is an fascinating story in terms of history, cases, human rights etc. It is also interesting for those interested in regulation theory.By Sirpa Soini
