This is an engaging and masterful history of the contributions of two prominent professionals to the development of psychoanalytic theory during the early 20th century: master Sigmund Freud, MD, and student Otto Rank, Psychologist. Drawing from their original letters written from 1906-1925, Lieberman and Kramer take us on a journey that reveals the poignant relationships, controversies, and challenges they shared that ended in a miserable parting in 1926. Reading these letters, the reader is privileged to walk around in their minds and to understand first hand how their differences exploded into personal attacks that reduced their ability to communicate as professionals. While there were real differences in their basic premises-Freud's biological focus, and Rank's concept of will, they shared a passion to advance and develop psychoanalytic theory. Students of history, psychology, sociology, and even medicine have much to learn from this excellent scholarly work as to how knowledge and wisdom developed and affected change in the practice of mental health.
