From Booklist

Here’s an interesting idea: humor (and what the author calls its “most common symptom,” laughter) is a consequence of having a brain that relies on conflict. Weems, a neuroscientist, explores what goes on inside our cranium when something makes us laugh; he also explores the essence of humor itself (Why can we tell when something’s funny, but a computer cannot?), why we laugh longer and harder at some things than we do at others, and how a healthy sense of humor can help us have a healthy body. If, as the author suggests, humor results from conflict in the brain, then certain things follow from that: we laugh loudest at stereotypes because we know on some level that they’re wrong, even if we find them amusing; we cackle when we’re surprised because our perceptions have been suddenly altered. Considering its subject, the book is a bit dry, but then it’s not a humor book; it’s a serious book about the neuroscience of humor. --David Pitt

Review

“[A] fascinating new book.... Weems makes the argument that jokes have deep sources in our human needs and psychologies. Human life is complex, not simple, although we have simple needs (food, sex, safety, sleep, friendship, etc.). Humor is a response to inevitable conflict. The humor isn’t in the joke; it is in the attitudes of those telling and hearing the joke. The same joke will be funny sometimes to some people and entirely fail to rouse a response to different people at different times.”
—Alva Noë, NPR’s 13.7 blog

“Weems’s central idea is that humor and laughter are by-products of the complex workings of the brain, rather than a separate function seated in some funniness control center. Drawing on both current neuroscience research and amusing anecdote, the author steers clear of reductionism and builds his case that humor is more diffuse and complex than other emotions and perceptions.”
—The Scientist

“In Ha!, cognitive neuroscientist Scott Weems analyzes how the punchline of a great joke, like a mini ‘eureka!’ moment, takes us by surprise and reframes our thinking. Humor, Weems argues, draws on our appetite for solving problems and helps us establish some order in a disordered world.... [I]lluminate[s] the inner workings of humor with a verve that befits the subject.”
—Psychology Today

“Mirth, points out cognitive neuroscientist Scott Weems, is still something of a conundrum—but one well worth cracking. His journey through the jovial looks in turn at what it is, what it is for and why we should cultivate it.”
—Nature

“Neuroscientist Scott Weems applies the scientific method to the human funny bone to find out what makes us laugh. He discovers that laughter is one way the brain deals with the discomfort of a particularly inappropriate joke, or the surprise of an unexpected punchline.”
—Discover

“[A] stimulating overview of what researchers have learned about why we laugh.”
—Kirkus Reviews

“Weems renders extensive research accessible for a wide audience.... Humor is a difficult, subjective topic of study, and while Weems doesn’t present major conclusions, the information is interesting and the commentary insightful.”
—Publishers Weekly

“Weems, a neuroscientist, explores what goes on inside our cranium when something makes us laugh; he also explores the essence of humor itself (Why can we tell when something’s funny, but a computer cannot?), why we laugh longer and harder at some things than we do at others, and how a healthy sense of humor can help us have a healthy body.”
—Booklist Online

"Move over, Henri Bergson, Weems explains the science of laughter way more charmingly. Our neurons are still cracking up."
—Thomas Cathcart and Daniel Klein, authors of Plato and a Platypus Walk Into a Bar

"Scott Weems' Ha! is an excellent, non-technical and engaging introduction to the field of humor studies and a much needed book…. Clear, entertaining, and full of personal anecdotes that enliven the discussion."
—Salvatore Attardo, Dean of Humanities, Social Sciences and Arts, Texas A&M University, and editor-in-chief of Humor

“Scott Weems' book Ha! is a superb explanation of humor that is simultaneously entertaining and informative. I enjoyed every page, and at the end came away with new insight into what really makes things funny.”
—James A. Reggia, Professor of Computer Science, University of Maryland

This author educates us through his "investigation into the science of humor and laughter" using multiple lenses. He holds a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience for UCLA, an MFA in Creative Writing from Lesley University, and is a former research scientist at the University Of Maryland Center for Advanced Study of Language. Weems cites current research, and includes anecdotes and some jokes, while exploring a maze of empirical data about why humor is important in our lives every day.

Weems argues that "humor has only recently become a legitimate topic of study for academic fields like linguistics, psychology, and sociology". His goal is to "act as a translator", combining interesting findings from a variety of fields to "form a new field...Humorology". He cites different assessment tools, including "the Mirth Response Test, a humor tool from the mid-twentieth century that was once popular enough to be featured in Life Magazine". He also identifies other questionnaires including: the "3WD (Witz Dimensionen, or "joke dimension"), Humor Test ", developed by German researcher Willibald Ruch, which, based on responses to jokes and cartoons, groups humor preferences into three types. Weems also discusses a questionnaire developed by Richard Wiseman, Psychologist from north of London, used in Wiseman's project called the Language Lab, to assess "What makes a joke funny?".

Our professor connects studies about brain chemistry with humor, including neuroscientist Dena Mobbs research at Stanford University linking the "dopamine reward circuit" to humor as one side effect of the emotional response to positive feelings. Mobbs examines "the three stages our brains go through when transforming ambiguity and confusion into pleasure".

so heres my review:
so overall: i give this book 3 STARS because
theres one typo error: its actually 1kg= 2.2 pounds***
not 1pound= 2.2 kg
this book is still VERY HELPFUL!!!! id give it 4 stars if it wasent for the typo lol.
i took my test in august 13'.
i used this book for my hesi exam which only had the reading, grammar, vocabulary, and math sections.
i used this website: testprepreview.com
*****i passed my math section with a 100 and my english composite score was also a 100. for the vocab section on the test, there may be words not listed in the book, but u can eliminate some obvious wrong answers.
****for the reading section on the test, the questions are straight forward!
!!!! theres no real way of studying for reading comprehension, i just basically memorized the hesi hints in that study section. memorize your terms for grammar, know ALL the VOCAB listed in the book, the math section had ALOT of subtracting, adding, multiplying and dividing of FRACTIONS,know your percents,KnOW MILITARY TIME. and again KNOW UR FRACTIONS!!! if u dont know how to work on them once, then u wont know how to do them 20 times !!!!math part was very heavy on fractions!!!
also,KNOW ur CONVERSIONS! practice how to convert using test prep website with practice questions in the book.
how i studied:
i made index cards for the hesi hints in reading comprehension, for all vocab terms, for grammar terms and tips, and for math i practiced all the problems OVER AND OVER again. make sure u practice everyday and constantly test urself using each chapter test and APPENDIX TESTS. practice makes perfect!
- good luck!!! :]
By liz
I just took my HESI admission exam (omg I was dying from stress)! I used this book as a study guide and I passed my HESI test with flying colors. The math and language section are good study tools just on its own. The science sections, you should use it as a skeleton of what you should study. Dive into your past biology/chemistry text books and read up on the subjects they mention in here. The test doesn't seem to go too much in depth and focuses more on the broad subjects. But, every test is different so it might be different for you.
Good luck!

This book is great! It has the most common orthopedic conditions that one will see in the clinic setting. Not only does it give a brief overview, but it discusses physical exam findings, differential diagnosis, non-operative and operative treatment. I think the thing that really sets this book apart it that it also concisely addresses patient education bullet points to hit, surgical positioning, and describes the surgical procedure(s) that would be performed if the condition is treated surgically. It basically comments on most things the patient will question during the appointment so you won't be left without an answer. There are great anatomical illustrations and tables. It also details how to do the most common procedures and injections with pictures as well as online videos. This book is a combination of Netter's Concise Orthopaedic Anatomy and Essential Orthopaedics. I am a preceptor for PA and medical students, and I recommend this as a practical orthopedic reference that the student will be able to use for the rest of their career. It could even fit into the pocket of a white coat!

There are a handful of minor errors I have found throughout the book (like using a 25g needle for an aspiration) but again, these are minor and you'll recognize these if you have a little bit of ortho knowledge. The biggest area for improvement I see would be with the ICD-9 codes that are listed for each condition. These are great but ICD-10 is coming in October and the ICD-9 codes won't be applicable at that point. This could certainly be updated in a second edition, but seeing how complicated orthopedic ICD-10 coding is going to be it might be an overwhelming section.

Overall, I am very impressed with the amount of practical and useful information that is contained in this small book. If you are going to get one orthopedic book, get this one!

This renowned work is derived from the authors' acclaimed national review course (“Physics of Medical Imaging") at the University of California-Davis for radiology residents. The text is a guide to the fundamental principles of medical imaging physics, radiation protection and radiation biology, with complex topics presented in the clear and concise manner and style for which these authors are known. Coverage includes the production, characteristics and interactions of ionizing radiation used in medical imaging and the imaging modalities in which they are used, including radiography, mammography, fluoroscopy, computed tomography and nuclear medicine.  Special attention is paid to optimizing patient dose in each of these modalities. Sections of the book address topics common to all forms of diagnostic imaging, including image quality and medical informatics as well as the non-ionizing medical imaging modalities of MRI and ultrasound.

The basic science important to nuclear imaging, including the nature and production of radioactivity, internal dosimetry and radiation detection and measurement, are presented clearly and concisely. Current concepts in the fields of radiation biology and radiation protection relevant to medical imaging, and a number of helpful appendices complete this comprehensive textbook. The text is enhanced by numerous full color charts, tables, images and superb illustrations that reinforce central concepts. The book is ideal for medical imaging professionals, and  teachers and students in medical physics and biomedical engineering. Radiology residents will find this text especially useful in bolstering their understanding of imaging physics and related topics prior to board exams.

After reading several chapters of this new edition, I am compelled by my excitement about it to write this review here. The 3rd Edition of "Bushberg" is not just a newer version of the already-classic textbook; it is entirely a new book. Its contents are largely rewritten, with vivid illustrations added for almost every concept mentioned in the text. For example, the chapter of Computed Tomography (Chapter 10) now contains 72 figures, without even counting figure subsets; that is more than one figure per page. Everything is illustrated.

The reorganization of content and addition of numerous colorful figures have fundamentally improved this book, and may set a new standard for future medical physics textbooks. Now those physics concepts in medical imaging are much easier to understand. After reading the institutional copy in preparation for teaching a class, I decided to order a copy for myself to replace my old edition (and come here to tell everybody about it). In my opinion, the 3rd Edition of this book will set a high standard for future medical physics textbooks.
By D. Wang
The third edition of "The Essential Physics of Medical Imaging" contains a thousand pages of text, tables, and figures. The layout of the book is very attractive, with full color used throughout and to good effect. The authors have done an excellent job communicating the underlying physics through liberal use of diagrams. One or more figures appear on nearly every page spread.

The text makes strong efforts to explain the physics behind the phenomena, which is geared at the level of a first year physics course, while the handful of calculus equations are explained in the text. The required physics knowledge is nicely summarized in the first Appendix. The book is targeted for a clinical audience and should be comprehensible to anyone in medical imaging willing to invest the effort. A good example is the section on magnetic resonance imaging, which is methodically explained without distracting jargon or lengthy equations.

It is not a mathematically driven text. For that material I would turn to Kak and Slaney's "Principles of Computerized Tomographic Imaging" or Epstein's "Introduction to the Mathematics of Medical Imaging." It also does not focus on the instrumentation used, for which Bronzino's "The Biomedical Engineering Handbook" is a good resource.

These comments aside, the text delivers on its promise to elucidate the relationship between medical imaging and the underlying physics it employs.
