This book by F. WIlliam Engdahl details the politics behind genetically modified organisms (GMOs). If people read this book, there would be a demand for labeling. Sadly, most corn and soy is now genetically modified. Canola oil is also always genetically modified.

The book lists the dangers of eating GMOs:

1) NEW TOXINS CREATED: Toxins are unintentionally created when new genes are introduced into a plant's cells. (page 6)

2) SMALLER SIZE IF THOSE WHO EAT GMOs: In a study in which rats were fed GMO potatoes, they were found to have smaller body size, smaller liver and heart sizes, and smaller brain sizes! (p. 23)

3) UNPREDICTABILITY: A given DNA molecule may be stable in a test tube, but can become unstable in living organisms, interacting in extremely non-linear and complex ways. (p. 156) Biologist Dr. Mae-Wan Ho stressed, "Entirely new genes and combinations of genes are made in the laboratory and inserted into the genomes of organisms to make GMOs. Contrary to what you are told by pro-GMO scientists, the process is not at all precise. It is uncontrollable and unreliable, and typically ends up damaging and scrambing the host genome, with entirely unpredictable consequences." (p. 159)

4) BAD HEALTH OR DEATH WHEN EATING A LOT OF GMOs: Glockner, a university trained farmer, was shocked to find his cattle having gluey-white feces and violent diarrhea after he increased the dosage to a diet of pure GMO corn! Their milk contained blood, and some cows stopped producing milk. Five calves died! Glockner ultimately lost almost his entire herd of 70 cows! (p. 231)

5) INFANT DEATH: In 2006, a story in a respected London newspaper, The Independent, carried a story called, "Unborn Babies Could be Harmed by GMOs.

This was a required book for my micro class. It's not an easy book to read, I had to re read a lot of it in order to retain the info :P also it should be hard cover due to the width of the book, it's very floppy.

The cover of the book came destroyed and I decided to rent the book since it's cheaper. I just feel that they should have sent a book in better condition especially since the info on the book said it was in good condition

Hailed by advance reviewers as a kinder, gentler P. Chem. text, this book meets the needs of a one-semester course or a full-year course in physical chemistry. It is an ideal choice for classes geared toward pre-medical and life sciences students. Or, as stated in a May 2001 review in Journal of Chemical Education, this text meets these students where they are and opens the door to physical chemistry from a perspective they can appreciate. Physical Chemistry for the Chemical and Biological Sciences offers a wealth of applications to chemical and biological problems, numerous chapter-ending exercises, and an accompanying solutions manual. Well known for his clear writing and careful pedagogical approach, Raymond Chang has developed yet another masterpiece in chemical education.

I am field-testing this text for a two-semester Physical Chemistry sequence. Initial impressions of the book are very favorable. In particular, I like Prof. Chang's use of several "real world" examples to illustrate important principles. My students find the math substantial but not very intimidating.

Some colleagues of mine miss the mathematical rigor found in other Phy Chem texts like McQuarrie and Levine however.

On a lighter note, the color scheme used for this text is excellent. It is just right, neither too drab nor too glaring.
By Nestor
This is a good text. It is not at as high level as most other popular p-chem textbooks. If you think this text is too hard, then forget about the p-chem texts by Atkins or McQuarrie. You might want to get a copy of Physical chemistry by Ball or the one by Engel and Reid to clarify some materials. I don't think any p-chem text is necessary better than others. Each has its own strenghs and weaknesses. How well you do in this course will also depend on your preparedness to take it. Many students are not well prepared to take p-chem. Therefore they blame the textbook, their teacher, and everything they can think of in the universe and beyond for not doing well in this course.

An introduction to life span motor development. This third edition reflects developments in research findings and has been expanded to present topics from a unifying model of constraints approach. Students should learn not only how to look at the individual but also at the task and the environment to fully understand the factors affecting motor development. In addition, a life span approach has been integrated throughout the text. The text includes the following features: real-life vignettes applying to each chapter's content; a running glossary of terms in the margins, which provides definitions where students need them; interactive reflection questions throughout the text to help students master the material and test their learning as they go; assessment boxes to ensure that students learn about evaluation techniques and instruments in a consistent way; a list of objectives opening each chapter; and chapter summaries. Popular features from the second edition have been retained, including: discussion questions at the end of each chapter; concept summaries throughout each chapter; and an index of key terms at the end of each chapter.

There is a clarity to the way the author presents the material in this book which I found refreshing and helpful. I have a Master's Degree in Physical Therapy and managed, through this book, to finally get a handle on some of the theoretical material that blew past me during the mania of graduate school. The author is especially good in discussing the Ecological vs. the Maturational models of motor development and motor learning. If you are in pediatrics in any way, I highly recommend this book to you. It offers a very clear "helicopter view" of some very controversial and complicated material without over-simplifying things.

Everyone in the class disliked this book, including the instructor. I found it a chore to read, something that is not usually the case for me. There were numerous mistakes--including in at least one of the formulas given in the book, which had signs reversed. It was unorganized and difficult to read, going far too in depth for an undergrad course in some areas and not far enough in others. If you are an instructor, pick a different book!
By S. A. Rogers-Winner
This is, without a doubt, the worst science textbook I have ever used - and with a degree in chemical engineering, I have used a number of science textbooks.

The text is imprecise and unclear. You will find yourself reading it multiple times to see if you missed the definitions and explanations, only to realize that no, it just isn't there. And that is just the text. For my class, I was also required to purchase online access with OWL to complete the homework problems. OWL is no better - I have found multiple conflicts between the text and OWL, not to mention multiple mistakes and equations that are just plain incorrect in the homework problems.

Did I mention I'm only at chapter 3? I know most people purchasing this book don't have a choice, it was assigned. But if you have any choice in the matter, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. I don't know how something like this was approved for publishing.

I was really disappointed to find that the information in the book is compromised by what looks to be corporate sponsorship. I've heard that a lot of text books are being published with support from various corporations (Coke, Pepsi, McDonalds) but this is the first time that I've known it do be so blatant. The first paragraph of the chapter entitled Nutrition, Metabolism, Enzymes includes the following: Scientists at Nestle (as in the cereal and chocolate company) "have been developing products with a nutritional bang." I was surprised to see this, but was even more surprised as I read through the chapter and found that Nestle is mentioned (always in a positive light) no less than 23 times in the chapter, including 2 pictures of Nestle products.

Many paragraphs start something like this one (p. 72) "To support bone health, Nestle markets a powered drink mix that contains the minerals calcium and phosphorus in addition to magnesium, zinc, and vitamins C, D, and K - essentially all the micronutrients necessary to build bone tissue." If I were a non-major, I would take this to mean that I could just drink this Nestle drink and I'd provide everything my bones need. It isn't true, and it's just one example of many in the book where the priority is on advertising for a company rather than giving credible, factual information. It would be one thing if this was a self-help book or pop science, but this is a college textbook.

Here's how fiber is taught in this book (p. 66): "Nestle's Boost Glucose Control drink, for example, contains fiber, a type of carbohydrate known to slow down digestion."

Please ask your professor to find another source for students - we want real information, not corporate advertising.

Goof book. Had to purchase for my Genetics of Disease class and is a great book for learning the basic of biology in general but also great detail applicable to my course.

How do we get the attention of a nonscientist? And if we can get it, how do we keep it - not only for the duration of the course or the chapter in a textbook but beyond? How do we convey in our courses and our textbooks not just what we know but also how science is done? These are the challenges we hope to address with our new series of textbooks specifically for the nonscientist. With this series,

W. H. Freeman and Scientific American join forces not just to engage nonscientists but to equip them critical life tools. Download latest books on mediafire and other links compilation Biology for a Changing World with Core Physiology [Print Replica] [Kindle Edition]

I would expect a book on biomechanics to explain the 'bio' and the 'mechanics'. This book assumes you already know all about the bio and nothing about the mechanics.

So if you are a 'bio' person, familiar with the names of every bone muscle tendon, etc. in the body and want a primer on the basic laws of mechanics and how these relate to motion of the human body then this is probably an OK book.

If you are a 'mechanics' person, familiar with torque, work, power, energy, etc. and want a primer on the the basic bones/muscles/tendons/ligaments structure and how these relate to human movement then I think this book won't be much help.

I come from an engineering background and am already familiar with Newton's laws of motion, torque, etc. Since I've started doing a bit of track and field coaching I wanted a book which would help me understand the actions of the various muscles etc. in an engineering context. For this purpose the book is more or less useless. I couldn't find a single illustration of the skeleton with the names of the bones, or of the muscles or tendons or ligaments. When the book says things like "Your index finger should be able to feel the tendon of your right biceps brachii, and your thumb should feel the back of your elbow, the olecranon process of your ulna." I have no clue what it's talking about and I couldn't find anything to help me. When I went to the index in the hope of finding an illustration all I found was a reference to "The anatomical insertion of the triceps brachii is always the olecranon process of the ulna...". Need I say more?

I was tempted to rate the book 3 stars but I think the illustrations are too weak. Suppose you are considering the forces involved when you bend your arm. Even if you know your anatomy & physiolgy inside out I think you'd want the illustrations to show the muscles and tendons involved.
By R. J. Hunter
This book is a good book if you are trying to review physics, but the application to sport and exercise is not great. There are kind of silly and simple examples that it tries to apply the physics concepts to sports, such as how much torque would it take to tip over a portable basketball if somebody is hanging on the rim. I wish it was more of a kinesiology book with physics applied than physics with little sport applied.

It was very much need. And I enjoy using it a lot. So much helpful to use. While doing my studies

I have a background in the performing arts and was terrified of changing my career path toward Occupational Therapy after not being in school for ten years, mainly because of the dense science courses. I bought this book and worked through it over the summer before starting Anatomy and Physiology I and II prerequisites the following year. I was so pleased with this-- I needed a watered down, interesting version before starting back up and diving into the dense text my class required. I am a visual, sensory learner and this book helped me greatly. I got A's in the Prerequisites--master's degree here I come!
