I work as a child psychologist in private practice, primarily with a focus on diagnostic testing and assessment. Through the years, my go-to book has been Kaplan & Sadock's 'Synopsis of Psychiatry' [2007]. While that book will continue to serve as a vital resource for me, it is exciting to see the newest generation in this area, with the publication of 'The Textbook of Psychiatry.'

This book is published by American Psychiatric Publishing and is part of a series that focus on DSM 5. The format therefore parallels some of these other guides, with a similar lay-out. In contrast to some of the other books in this classification, however, the Textbook is quite extensive and comprehensive.

The Textbook has 1473 pages. It is also quite expensive. Still, if your work entails diagnosing or treating mental health conditions---in children, adolescents, or adults---this is an important resource to have in your library.

The book has 38 chapters, each written by experts in their field. Seven of these fall into the classification of 'overview,' with titles such as:

* The Psychiatric Interview
* Psychological Assessment
* Laboratory Testing & Imaging Studies
* Ethical Aspects of Clinical Psychiatry

The next 19 chapters basically cover the key DSM diagnostic categories [e.g., Neurodevelopmental, Bipolar, Depressive, Anxiety, Somatic, Sleep-Wake, etc. Disorders]. Most of the chapters start off with an introduction to how the disorder is classified in DSM. Thus, key criteria are listed for each of the sub-categories.

The authors then provide a strengths/limitations*pro/con discussion of how DSM describes the condition, as well as considerations for differential diagnosis.
